Wanda 09/23/2008

Right now, I am in an uber artsy-craftsy creative mode and am cruising the swap offerings many times a day. I've never hosted a swap before, though, and really don't want to take that task on right now. I'm thinking maybe we could make a thread about swaps we would like to see offered, so that maybe some of our super swap hostesses might want to host them.

I love holiday themed swaps in particular. Any holiday. But I enjoy many other non-holiday themed ones, too. And I like it when the closing date and/or sending date aren't waaaaay out there. I tend to lose some steam if I am waiting for a long time to get my partner and be able to look at their profile to decide what to make for her.

My suggestions are:

  1. Lucky Parcel Swaps - I have just discoved these with the help of Flickr, and I am fascinated with their cuteness.

  2. Gothic Arch hanging artwork - I really am not into ATCs any more, and would like to see more swaps (of any kind) offered for art work that is a little larger. See my Flickr for some recently added types of what I mean...although I have yet to come up with an actual gothic arch.

  3. House-shaped hanging artwork...which is what my Gothic Arch attempt turned out to be. (See my Flickr.) Although it wasn't what I intended, it did turn out to be something I liked. I'd love to do more. That one, I used a wire as the hanger. The other one in my photos (a long rectangular piece) had a strip of paper twist for the hanger. These were cardboard based (not cardstock) and would be sturdy enough, yet lightweight enough to hang anywhere.

Anyway, these are three of my suggestions. Anyone have any more????

Have you see the Charming Row Houses group? They do small decorated houses that could be hung on the wall.

I was thinking

"Do not open till DEC 25th" swap. our tree is always so bare I could do with some gifts to open so it feels more like x-mass.

Also with x-mass in mind how about a for him swap. Hubbie or BF items. handmade or otherwise.

I could do a knock em dead holiday recipe swap too! I have some people are always trying to get out of me. :)

Maybe a jar or bag recipe swap?? handmade premixes with directions maybe recipe. This could split into 2 swaps one could be sweet stuff other can be food.

.....errrr ok all out for now :)

A household necessities or clear out the clutter swap. It could include anything from around the house: travel toiletries, hotel soaps, moist towelletes, makeup samples, coupons, small sewing kits etc.

Grab bag swap...post your likes/dislikes/allergies etc...and we mail out surprises.

I'm new at this so maybe these have been done, but here are some ideas I had.

CRAFT TIPS POSTCARD. Send your partner(s) a post card with a crafting tip or trick you have picked up.

DOG COOKIE KIT. Put together a kit (recipe, dry ingredients, cookie cutter, etc.) for making treats for your partners pup.

Not that my impatience will ever let me get away with it... but, "Do Not Open Until Christmas" would be awesome. It's just me, the boyfriend and the cat... and all our present-giving seems to happen at our parents'. I'd like to have something under my own tree.

I'd really like to see more swaps for pets. I don't have a dog, but I like shopping for dog toys and accessories for some reason. And my cat will take all the toys he can get.

I'm also really looking forward to February, in hopes that there is a pretty big handmade Valentine swap. I always made my cards myself in Elementary School... and I rarely find a use for construction paper and glitter in my everyday life. :)

Wanda 09/24/2008

Great ideas, everyone! And I definately want to join a big handmade Valentine swap!!!!!!!

eyeskater 09/24/2008

I like the Valentine swap idea too....I used to love that in school.

teardrop 09/24/2008

is anyone allowed to take these ideas and create swaps or are they just for the person who thought of the ideas?

Wanda 09/25/2008

These ideas are for anyone to use. As I said in my beginning post, I don't want to host any swaps and I was hoping that someone who would like to host some, might be interested in the ideas. And no one else who has added on to this thread has said anything about hosting one themselves either. So I say go for it, teardrop! LOL! :)

P.S. (in edit mode) Maybe to be 100% sure you could message the person whose idea you would like to use.

lizanne 09/25/2008

All of my ideas are up for grabs. Just as long as I get to participate in the swap. (he, he).

I think a CRITTER TOY SWAP would be fun like overflowing said. Make little toys for your partners pets.

or you could GIVE YOUR PARTNER A PEDICURE. Pick out a polish for them and send them all the little goodies they will need for the perfect pedicure.

KNIT SOCK KIT. Pick a yarn and pattern for your partner to knit a pair of socks.

How about a swap to use up these notecards!!! Like a quick turnaround "how was your day" swap to 3 or so partners?

eyeskater 09/25/2008

My ideas are up for grabs too...take 'em.

wombles 09/26/2008

I'd like a "moo" card swap? I'm surprised there isn't one already? I'm only new to swapbot so not sure how to start one.

magpie55 09/26/2008

In reference to eyeswappers suggestion about clearing out the clutter.

How about an email swap: Decide on a decluttering project.
Take 3 pictures. 1 before, 1 after, 1 of the pile of stuff you are getting rid of!!! Email the pictures to your swap buddy.

We would be each other's cheerleaders in the fight against clutter!!!

I've been thinking of doing a "shapes in my community" eswap, where the players take creative pictures of objects that make certain geometric shapes. I once took a pic of a tractor tire for a circle once, it was really cool...

quidditchmom 09/29/2008

@redring I LOVE the hubby/BF/partner swap idea! There are so many for us and our little ones, the menfolk get left out. I did send my last partner something for her husband, but it was super tiny. I'd definitely be in for that swap. If I were to create a swap I would do something like a Hogwarts Class swap. Like you choose the class you want for your theme, be it Potions, Divination, or DADA. Your partner sends you something along that theme, maybe a handmade Sneakascope, or a Potions syllabus for the semester, etc. Or a Heroes ATC? Make a trading card of your favorite Heroes character. Incorporate their ability, etc. idk, they might seem lame, lol.

I really miss doing those flat rate box crams. The ones where everyone starts with the same size box and crams it full of things for a partner. But I want one with a challenge, like every square centimeter of the box must be filled and there has to be some outrageously large number of things included and the box must weigh at least 5 pounds, or something like that. And to get a 5 rating, the box must be really full, not like some boxes I've received that have a few broken things rattling around inside.

SMBee 09/30/2008

I see lots of Halloween swaps right now, but no Autumn in general. I'd start one but I don't want to host more than one public swap at a time.

AngelaMariex3 09/30/2008

I, too, love the flat rate box swaps! Not so much the challanging bit, but love the flat rate swaps. It was one of the first swaps I took part in, and everyone had so much fun and got some great stuff!!

How about some sort of partner chooses art swap? Maybe an original character art swap, where each participant makes up a fictional character (or uses an existing one from a story they've written/want to write) and gives a description of them, then their partner draws them. Or just a general art trade- you post a reference picture of yourself, or your significant other, or your cat, or your favorite rock star- whatever you'd like, and then your partner draws them.

I might run the former when I get a little more experienced here, but if anyone wants to take the idea please do! (Art trades are done all the time on other sites, after all.)

redring 10/4/2008

same here! anyone wants my ideas go for it. If no one dose I may try to host one. quiditchmom I love the idea!! I think it would need a month or so lead time to do though cause I could get crafty with that! Overflowing I hear ya. Also my cats go unloved every year. i would love a pet care package swap. If you host these let me know!!!

I really love the "Shapes in my Community" idea. That's awesome, I'd totally do that.

I would also love to see a "Dear Diary" swap. It's pretty self explanatory - you write a "Dear Diary" page everyday for a week, just like you would in a normal diary, and then at the end, you package it up & send it to your partner.

We also did this swap on another site - I believe it was called Swap by Numerics or something to that effect - you make a list starting from whatever you want, counting down, and you send that many of that item to your partner, for example:

  • 6 FB's

  • 5 Postcards

  • 4 Sticker Squares

  • 3 Hand-Made Envelopes

  • 2 Pieces of Stationary

  • 1 Candle

Or something to that effect, anyway. It's a lot of fun. You can even make it an option to switch the "items" around yourself to whichever number you feel necessary. :D

I think a homemade headband/bow for your daughter swap would be fun.
