Description:

I just learned that Feb 23-29 is Freedom to Read Week in Canada. I love that idea and I love to read books that people tell me NOT to read! So let's read a challenged book!

The link above tells more about the Freedom to Read week, and includes a list of challenged books, but for this swap, you can choose ANY banned/challenged book that is currently on your TBR list (it needs to be on your TBR, though), not just a book listed on the site. I wanted to make it easier to do within the group.

Choose a book from your TBR that fits the category and read the book. If you don't get it finished by the send by date, just tell your partner about the book to the best of your ability by the send by date. This will include audio books, graphic novels, picture books - if it's banned or challenged, it works.

Before the send by date, send your partner an EMAIL including the title and author of the book you chose, include a brief description (your own or from the book or website), and if you liked it. If you know why the book was banned or challenged, you can include that information, but you don't have to.Some are hard to figure out, and others will say 'religion' for the reason. Huh? Not enough of an answer for me! The "good" news is, if you are a regular Bible reader, you're all set for this swap, as the Bible is usually on banned and challenged lists!

You don't have to wait til Feb 23rd to start your book - you can start it at any time. If you can't get it finished before the send by date, just tell your partner as much about it as you can.

If you have any questions or comments Please send me a PM rather than a message below, and I am terrible at remembering to check the comments! :(

If you would like to share the title and author of the book you will be reading, you can feel free to do so in the comments below, and if you are just watching, please leave a note below. Thanks!

In the US, (at least - or is it International?) Banned Book Week is Sept 20-26, so when we get closer to those dates, there will be swaps for that as well. If you know of a more local (to you) banned or challenged book week that you would like to share, please let me know. Any time I'm told I can't read a book, I have to do it! So let's read banned books. :)

For this swap, I"m going to read Frankenstein by Mary Shelly. It's been on my list since last fall, so it's a good time to read it!

THIS is one list of banned and challenged books.

Good Reads also has several different lists of banned and challenged books. HERE is that list.

Wikipedia also has banned book lists. I'm starting to think the bigger challenge is finding a book that is NOT banned, for some reason or another.

I'm going to read The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka

I wasn’t going to join this one but I want to read The Decameron and it was a banned book! So now I have joined!

Hi, actually, I removed The Decameron from my list...after starting it and then moving it to my DNF list. However, I will read Edward Snowden's Permanent Record instead.
