Description:

This is an Oldie but Goodie swap.

Click here to see the original swap from 2007 that I hosted.

It doesn't matter if you write for fun, for profit or just to express yourself. But you do need to be:

a) serious about your craft

b) willing to follow through.

The purpose of this swap is to get inspired about your writing, to set writing goals (a contract with yourself), and to assess your progress at the end of the swap.

Read carefully before joining. This is a two-part swap.

PART 1

a) Post below in the swap discussion area what type of writing you do and whether you write longhand, on a computer or typewriter. Be specific on your type of writing. (For example, if you write fiction, state what type of fiction. If you blog, what's the overall theme of your blog? Is your writing personal journaling, poetry, etc.?)

b) Be sure your profile is complete.

c) Prepare for your partner an inspirational gift that he/she can use in her/his writing -- something that will inspire the person in their writing efforts and goals. It may be a nice pen and journal, an idea notebook, a book or magazine on the craft of writing, a framed quote, a mug, etc. Use your partner's profile and the note they post below to determine what will make a great writer's gift. You are not to request anything in particular. Let your partner, who is also a writer, find something appropriately inspiring for you.

PART 2

a) Write a list of up to five writing goals you have for the next three months -- through the end of October 2010. Sign and date the list. Make two copies. Keep one for yourself. Mail the other along with the Part 1 gift, the second copy to your partner with a self-addressed envelope or mailing label. (no stamp. Your partner will pay the return postage)

b) On Oct. 1 (yes, I will remind you), send your partner's goals list back to her/him with a note of encouragement.

The note you get back will remind you of what you said you wanted to do and will let you know how far you've come on your writing goals.

Discussion

Greetings! I'll get us started with my note. I do a combination of both longhand and computer writing. On Wednesday nights (sometimes Thursdays if we have conflicts), I get together with a group of writers to write. We're usually found at Barnes & Noble, Panera or Starbucks. We chit chat for a bit, then everyone works on her own writing. My computer is a desktop, so whenever I'm out and about, I'm writing longhand. I generally use spiral notebooks. I usually get 15-20 of them for about 10 cents a piece at back-to-school sales! :) If I'm writing at a local library I use their computers and save to a flashdrive.

As for what I write: I'm primarily a fiction writer (women's fiction, general fiction, mystery, romance), but I've also done non-fiction, essays and poetry. My work in progress is an inspirational romance. And I have a mystery/suspense manuscript that I wrote last year for NaNoWriMo that I need to revise.

My husband loves these swaps because, as he says, "You are going to write regardless. The only difference is you send a copy to some one." Now I get to go shopping too.... probably not his idea of a writing swap. Thank you, Artistic, for the opportunity!

I tend to lean toward fiction most often and do some essay contests on occasion. Aside from exploring human nature, there isn't really a more specific category. To get a better idea of the kind of writing I do, you can check out the site listed on my profile. I can e-mail my partner two other sites I participate in as well if he/ she thinks it will help. One is a writing site and one is my family blog.

I write on the computer. Longhand kills me. My writing is sloppy and barely legible even to myself. With that said, I do like the look of fine point pens in bright colors. This is a recent discovery and on the occasion I am writing out a postcard or brief note, I search the house for such a pen. But that is pretty much the extent of my pen to paper writing.

Hey There! Really neat idea for a swap. I am always looking for people to keep me writing!

I'm a fiction writer usually. Right now i'm dabbling in more adult fiction (erotica/romance/violence) but I range from Young Adult all the way up. I kind of just write what inspires me in that moment, that means I've tried fantasy, horror, mystery, romance, YA, erotica, and beyond. My writing usually ranges from 70,000 to 125,000 words. However, I have a bad habit of not being able to end my stories.

I'm a computer writer, but I always have notebooks on me so I can scribble down ideas when they hit and then sit down with that notebook and work from there to write the stories I'm working on.

I have a close knit of writing friends who are from around North America who push me to write. And I have participated in NaNoWriMo for the past four November. But all in all my favourite spot/time to write is in my bed with my music blasting.

Feeling afraid to sign up for this, which is probably a good sign!

I work best when I regularly write at the computer. I like to be surrounded by inspiration, but able to spread out and think. I love my desk. It's vintage steel, gray, with waterfall trim. However, my desk is really cluttered right now, way past inspiring. I write on the lap top occassionally, more often longhand, especially for journalling and poetry and whenever I'm not at home. I am inconsistent about transcribing what I've written and editing and finishing in general. Worked as an editor though, great at editing other people.

I've been working on paranormal fiction with mythical characters, a memoir of essays, travel writing, and a (still unpublic) blog about parenting, nature and various inspirations. I am not allowed to go to the SCBWI conference again until I actually have a children's book manuscript. So, I haven't been in three years. Or so.
