Description:

This is the most fun thing to make, ever! These are balls made out of layer upon layer of crepe paper, with surprise objects tucked inside throughout the layers!

For a how-to tutorial: Go to www.notmartha.org

At the top, select "projects and tutorials"

Scroll down a bit, and on the left hand side of the screen, it will say "surprise balls"--select that

FYI: On the tutorial, it says to use sheets of crepe paper that you cut yourself. I have successfully used the roll kind that you buy at the dollar store with no trouble at all.

If you need some ideas about what to include in your surprise ball, message me!

I would like this to be a swap for people who have sent out at least 15 type 3 swaps. No recent ones will be allowed.

It was asked how many surprises to put in the ball--maybe 10-20 or so, depending on the size and quality of the surprises, but remember, these are little objects for the person you're sending to--not large or expensive things.

I hosted a swap similar to this but we used yarn for a Magic Yarn Ball. It's really fun putting them together and receiving is even MORE fun!

Oh........I meant to say, I'm watching for now until I'm caught up on some swaps, tags & pen pal letters.

I want yours.

HannahsMommy07 10/26/2011 #

Where do you find the balls?

Nekozet 10/26/2011 #

@HannahsMommy07 I believe you MAKE the balls - start with a small item and wrap it in crepe streamer until you have a tiny ball, then layer on another item, then wrap the crepe some more, then layer on another item - when you are done you will have a ball.

It seems like the ball would be huge! Like basketball size - these look baseball size. Does it matter if it's bigger? I'm thinking it doesn't matter as long as you get the items in.

lettergirl 10/27/2011 #

Oh no, it doesn't matter to me how big you make them! I think if you look at that tutorial (sorry I can't link it--I don't know how!) you'll see how it's done. The balls aren't enormous like that, because you're putting things in them that are little, and wrapping it tightly. I made one before and it turned out to be about the size of a grapefruit or so. It's really satisfying, for some reason! Hope you'll join! :)

I just made one of these as an "extra" goodie for a Halloween ATC partner. I filled it with Halloween charms, stickers, candy, scrabble tiles that spelled out "boo", ect. It came out really cute. Can't wait to make another one! Thanks for hosting.

Thank God for you weeatcrayons!! (I was hoping someone would have pity on me and do it for me! hahah!)

I loved this! It was fun to make. I'm not sure mine surprise ball had 10 things in it--some items were larger, but I thought that was funny because it made it sort of lumpy (and hopefully enticing!!) looking.
