Description:

With New Year and the year of Snake just around the corner, I thought It would be fun to make oriental style ATCs. Easy-peasy as far as the demands go:

1, Prepare 2 ATCs using collage, paint, drawing, stamping etc and make sure there is some sort of oriental element included;

2, Send 1 ATC to 2 partners.

Happy New year and happy swapping.

I believe Asian is considered more PC (politically correct, not post card!)

I think the world "Oriental" is just fine --- I knew what it meant, as in "from the Orient". :-) Sign me up!

Does it have to be a snake, because I hate snakes, but would like to make an oriental/Asian atc. P.S. I would rather not receive a snake either if at all possible. :-)

kankalin 12/29/2012 #

Nope, it does not have to be a snake, it just needs to have some sort of oriental motive (background, flowers, people etc)

I like this swap..but I don't like snake.. P.S: I would rather not receive a snake if it's possible..thanks :-)

Asian is more correct and more sensitive.

kerrydwynn 01/18/2013 #

Not to be provocative -- why is "Asian" more sensitive? I think it means "from the Orient"......

I really do not see how it has anything to do with which word is used to describe they type of ATC this is.

Orient via Wiki:

"The Orient means "the East". It is a traditional designation for anything that belongs to the Eastern world or the Near East or Far East, in relation to Europe. In English it is largely a metonym for, and coterminous with, the continent of Asia."

So in theory the term used is correct.

"oriental" is offensive when used to refer to a person. Asian is the correct term there. But oriental can still be ok to refer to other things, as in this case.

GothamChick 01/28/2013 #

Why "Asia" as against "the Orient": Being Asian myself, yes, Asia or Asian is the more modern and politically correct way to refer to the region of the world and the culture that I belong to. Wikipedia is correct that "The Orient" refers to "The East", but I'm not Oriental, and my culture (Filipino) is not Oriental. We refer to it as "Asian". Either way, let's have fun with the ATCs!
