Description:

A tight budget means trying to get the most for your money, and food is no exception. How many meals can you make on a 10 dollar/euro budget?

So here's the challenge: get food supplies with your 10 buck budget. Make as many meals as you can from those supplies (not all in one day, you have time). Assume that your partners will replicate this list and can only rely on 10 dollars/euros to get them through one week, so try to be creative and stretch everything as far as you can. Make a list of the meals and the recipes and email it to your partner.

If you can include a rough price guide, that would help even though prices vary by location and currency exchange. Single person households will perhaps find this easier than households with multiple members, but it would be something interesting to try!

You will have two partners. BCC the email addresses. No 1 or 3s in the last two months, please, and newbies should have filled out pprofiles. Everyone else is welcome.

This is very interesting. Does the $10 include buying spices that you need (like basil or parsley) or flour or sugar or other things like soy sauce or a few TBSP of oil? Please explain this.

This is a great challenge!

I, too, am curious about spices and oils. I can divide the price of my oil by how many tablespoons are in it...but that seems quite complicated!

Love the idea for the swap! :)

That's a very interesting question--in my opinion, spices like basil and parsley and basics like oil and salt should not be included, as it's safe to assume that many people already have this in their kitchen. If it's something exotic, for example extra virgin olive oil or pink himalaya salt, then it should be included in your budget.

In other words, if your partner would have to make a special trip for the particular item, then include it in your budget. If it's usually considered a standard kitchen item, don't worry about including it in the budget.

Thanks for the answers @Anneliese25 I've been planning my menu but... rice. I'm stuck on rice! I get mine in 10 pound bags which would blow more than half my budget. Can I do the dividing thing for the rice? Like, I'm cooking 2 cups, which is about 1/12 of the 10 pound bag so instead of $6 for 10 pounds, can I put 50 cents (which is $6 * 1/12)?? Sorry for all the questions, I just take these things seriously and want to do my best with the challenge. :D

I wouldn't do the divding thing, to be honest. We have to assume that your partner also wouldn't want to blow half their budget on a 10 pound bag of rice. Is there a small bag that you would/could purchase for cheaper and do those meals? As in, pretend you were buying the smaller bag of rice, but use the exact amount from the stash you already have so that you yourself don't have to buy anything extra, but your partner would have an accurate price/materials list.

We have 6 in our household... I think I'd be lucky to get two meals. I can't imagine anything very filling if I got 3 meals.

Alright, I won't do the division on the rice. Tricky, tricky! But I still love this exercise.

It reminds me of a $4/day Challenge I read on the Grocery Outlet store blog (yes, I'm a grocery geek). Oh, here I found the link. Might be good for inspiration. :)

Thanks, user, it's actually really interesting! Soyprincess, unfortunately the reality is that some people can only afford to spend 10 dollars a week on groceries, so though you hail from a larger household, I appreciate your interest in the swap.
