mag·pie noun /ˈmagˌpī/  magpies, plural A long-tailed crow with boldly marked (or green) plumage and a raucous voice Used in similes or comparisons to refer to a person who collects things, esp. things of little use or value. The Magpie is a bird who goes around collecting things so for the purpose of this journal you are to have at least 30 entries of things you have collected.

Examples are:

  • RECIPES
  • MENUS
  • CARDS/POSTCARDS
  • BITS OF RANDOM INFORMATION
  • CLIPPINGS FROM MAGAZINES/NEWSPAPERS
  • POEMS
  • SONG LYRICS
  • YOUR OWN PERSONAL THOUGHTS

You get the idea it can really be anything, but please do not make all 30 entries the same thing. You can use a journal or a composition notebook to put your entries in. . You will have one partner.

No recent 1's or 3's You must have completed at least 5 type 3 swaps to join.

Is this a one-time swap or a series of swaps?

draco 10/19/2013 #

This one was so much fun! I am looking forward to doing it again!

I have been working on my journal. Is it ok to add things that don't have words...like a sparkly button as an entry? or a cool wrapper? ephemera without profound meaning? I guess I don't know how to word this question. But do you know what I mean? Like one entry I have is just a stray fridge magnet rectangle word thingy that says "because". I put random stuff in my art journals because they catch my magpie eye. Another entry is a paper flower with a cool pearl brad in the center. Is this ok?

I found this cool way to create this journal using binder rings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3vbVRwM_Vk&list=PLF3A5AF8B61BDF494&index=6

My art journals are a little more grungy than that. I put down some layers on watercolor paper and other types of paper and made one big signature and sewed it down the middle. So far, so good. The binding has held up well with all of the medias slapped on top. I don't know if my idea of a magpie journal is gonna jive with everyone elses, though. More importantly, my partner's. There is still a week to drop out. I am having fun making it though. Lots of sewing, layers of paint with paper collaged in. The last journal swap I was in, I was assigned to the host and she loved what I made. Draco, let me know? Thanks!

stacy...sure, that's ok. everyone is different in what catches their eye on what they like to collect, hoard, or what ever. i guess this is one of those types of swaps, where a person's imagination can run wild.

Hi Draco!

Thanks so much for responding. Unfortunately, my new work schedule has put a dent in my craft time. I will keep working on the journal I started, bit by shiny bit. Maybe it will be close to finished by the time you host another awesome swap like this!

Stacy, your journal sounds amazing. I love to receive something that sounds a bit different, my journals are more visual than written.

AliCrafter 11/ 1/2013 #

so, would a magpie journal be the same as a smash book but maybe on smaller terms?

fawnscrafts 11/ 1/2013 #

Very interesting swap

grammag 11/29/2013 #

So, just to clarify a little bit. This is my first magpie journal. Can I just put things on some of the pages, or do I have to journal on them to tell why I collect this or that. And I'm using a brown paper bag book I made......is that OK? I feel kind of silly having to ask these simple questions, but I don't want my partner to be disappointed.
