Description:

This will be a very unique swap. Geocaching is a treasure hunt of sorts, using coordinates on a map. When you find the "cache," sign the log, and trade trinkets or move a trackable along to another cache. If you are intrigued, but haven't "met" geocaching, go to www.geocaching.com and learn about this fun hobby and be ready to get addicted!!!

Geocaching info (printable info sheet) and examples can be found on my website at:
http://www.seagateshare.com/share/barghahn56/share/babarghahn/SWAP%20TB/

NOTE: this web page only needs to be refreshed to see newly added info, so save it as a favorite to easily return to it!

For those who already geocache, you will love this! You will need to buy a travel bug trackable if you don't have one.

INSTRUCTIONS (10-31-13 revision)

1) Get a travel bug trackable (amazon.com has them)

2) Attach the Swap TB trackable tag to an appropriate travel bug of your choice

3) Activate using a fun name THAT AWAYS BEGINS WITH "SWAP TB" so they are is easy to search for at geocaching.com (ie, one of mine I have out is a Gumby keychain TB named "Where's Pokey?"...If it were a new one I was naming for this swap, I would have named it "SWAP TB Where's Pokey?")

4) Log the newly activated Swap TB in a nearby "VISITED" cache to create a starting point for miles accumulation

3) Wait for your partner assignment

4) Send your newly activated travel bug to your swap partner

5) When you receive your Swap TB, you may do one of the following:

-- visit other caches in their area with the Swap TB, take a photo, and LOG THE VISITS

-- travel with the Swap TB, take photos, and LOG THE VISIT

-- drop the Swap TB in a local interesting cache, take a photo, and LOG THE DROP

Feel free to travel with the swap TB that you receive to show off your area caches before your final drop. Please take photos of each cache visit and remember to LOG THE VISIT.

Don't forget to log the first cache VISIT as it will be the starting point for TB miles...mine is always the cache on our property. It will be fun to watch it travel on its map.

Make sure the Geocache container is large enough for the Swap TB! Always have a pen with you to sign the log

You MUST be a geocacher (or want to be one!) to do this swap, because it would be an easy one to flake on!

International geocachers will make this a lot of fun. I'll look at your geocahcing.com ID to make sure you are legit. If you are a newbie and HONESTLY want to enjoy this fun hobby, check out geocaching.com!

OK... so we log it into a local cache, and then send it to our swap partner? Why do we look for a cache near where they live? Is that what is in the description? I don't get it. Love this idea!!!!

Can we choose the cache to drop the bug into on our own? Being more familiar with our local caches... like TB hotels and such...

I changed the description some to cover questions and am adding info to my webpage... (does someone know how I can keep my text from not running all over the page??? thanks!)

I have a couple of questions. We buy the "travel bug trackable". Then we attach the "travel bug trackable" to the "appropriate travel bug of your choice". Is this an item ie key chain, toy etc? Then we visit a local cache, and then mail this item to our partner? What kind of container should we put this in? I cannot open the brochure with my computer. It is broken for that kind of thing :(

natasha838 11/ 2/2013 #

Are geocoins acceptable trackables to send for this swap?

MTNesters55947 11/ 2/2013 #

Mrs Sparkle. Thanks for you interest! After you get the trackable tag, attach it to a keychain or toy, etc. (whatever meets geocaching.com's criteria - family friendly, nothing sharp or dangerous, etc) then you would send YOUR trackable to your partner for them to put it in a fun cache in their area. It is OK if you take the Travel Bug you receive and record VISITS to other caches before you put it into a cache as a DROP. Thanks, Barb

MTNesters55947 11/ 2/2013 #

Oh, the container would already be placed as the cache you put it into. You don't need to publish a new geocache to put your swap partner's travel bug (that was mailed to you) into. However, you could if you wanted to, of course. And I would like these travel bugs to be traditional items, not geocoins. If you have a personalized one you WANT to send with the TB as an extra, that is fine. Thanks for the questions! MTNesters55947

Mrs Sparkle, the brochure has general information about geocaching...could you open that link but not the brochure item that is posted on it or could you not open the link, either?

siouxx05 11/ 3/2013 #

Geocaching website which will answer any question about 'caching..

MrsSparkle 11/ 5/2013 #

@MTNesters55947 I could not open the link due to computer issues on my end. Thanks for the clarificatioon! @siouxx05 thanks for the web site link. I had already checked it out before I posted my questions, I just wanted some clarification

Excited about this swap! Had wondered previously about possibility of swapping TBs with international penpals. My geocaching ID is watercrosser.

MTNesters55947 11/11/2013 #

Yes, it will be fun! My geocaching ID is MTNesters 55947. Hopefully we'll get some internationals going. Maybe after we do 1 or 2 swaps it will catch on...
