Description:

For this swap we'll be making standard size Artist Trading Cards (2 1/2 x 3 1/2"). Any technique can be used. The only "rule" is it has to be done from materials other than paper. This includes fabric, metal, angelina fibers, etc., etc. The base can be cardstock, but the top layer of the face of the card should be something besides paper. This is an International swap. We will send 2 ATCs to 2 partners for a total of 4 ATCs. You must be rated at least 4 and have no more than 1 recent No Send. I've had a few swaps lately where I didn't get my stuff and I don't want that to happen to me or anyone else. Please make ATCs that you would enjoy receiving and are proud to send. If you have any questions, just let me know. Let's have some art fun! PLEASE mark SWAPBOT OTHER THAN PAPER ATC SWAP on the envelope.

I like making fabric ATCs so this is great! Thanks for hosting this one.

lgj302 12/27/2006 #

You're welcome, Colleen, thanks for joining in! The swaps I set up today are the first time I've tried co-ordinating swaps.

lgj302 12/29/2006 #

Does anyone want to talk about ideas for Other Than Paper besides fabric?

Coffeelatte 12/30/2006 #

What are angelina fibers?

I just saw a beautiful ATC on Flickr that was done on a faux suede base. I've also received one in a trade that was done on wood with aluminum accents -- one of my very favorite cards!

lgj302 12/31/2006 #

Angelina fibers are fusible kind of wispy fibers. They come in beautiful colors and can be fused into shapes (like a butterfly, for ex.), can be stamped on, etc. The wood ATC sounds cool - haven't seen one. I've done transparencies, mica, angelina backed with cardstock, and fabric. Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head that were "other than paper". I've seen metal, but haven't tried it yet, although I have done metal tape backed with cardstock (which would also fit in this swap).

If you wonder if something would fit in to this swap, just ask.

Where do you get angelina fibers? I am really interested. Right now, I think I am going to use some of the ultra-light sculpey that I have. I think it will work terrifically. I also have some really gorgeous thick satin ribbon that I am wanting to try out. I need to put a little more thought into how to do that...it may need to be fused or sewn to something with more heft so it will stay flat.

lgj302 01/ 6/2007 #

Angelina fibers are usually available in fabric type stores. The ultra light sculpey idea sounds great! I don't think I've seen it. The satin ribbon also is a very interesting idea, which I hadn't thought of.

pootle 01/12/2007 #

I love this idea! Just bought a sheet of balsa wood to experiment with, although I'm not sure what I'm going to do to it! I hope everyone posts pictures of the "cards" they get to inspire us all for next time.

DIANE C - Hi! I emailed you, but haven't heard back yet. Please email me back.

Coffeelatte 01/19/2007 #

I just received some beautiful velvety fabric bits that I am going to use for this swap...I thought it would be harder to come up with non-paper ideas, but now am having lots of fun with this one!

ScrapTheSurface 01/22/2007 #

Names please. Waiting to send mine.

lgj302 01/22/2007 #

I never received an email from SwapBot that the process had changed. Just went to the weblog to see if it said anything and sure enough. Partners have now been assigned.

Helen N and Diane C - Your cards will go out tomorrow's mail.

Turtle 01/22/2007 #

I didn't read all the comments but someone wanted to know what to use besides fabric...I was thinking of embossing on an aluminum can. I cut up a coke can and flattened it out. I'm going to cut it down to size and draw some designs on it with an embossing tool.

boatingbelle 01/23/2007 #

I tried to use very thin sheets of polystyrene (similar to the stuff they use for insulating under wallpaper but by the time I had added a few decorations it was too thick.

Alphenquilts 01/23/2007 #

Jackie and Sally, your cards will be in the mail tomorrow.

sallyacious 01/25/2007 #

Poggy123, I dropped yours in the mail this evening. Janet Burns, I'm finishing yours up tomorrow and sending them out on Friday. (I'll post again when they've gone.

For those trying to use stuff other than fabric, I made two of mind out of old cd's. They cut up fine with a pair of scissors. And then I added stuff on top.

pootle 01/26/2007 #

Poggy123 - thank you! I especially like the butterfly card. Your angelina fibres are a lot finer than the ones I have but yes mine get everywhere too!

sallyacious 01/28/2007 #

Janet Burns, I mailed your ATCs today.

FingersInc 01/28/2007 #

Jean - received your 2 ATCs, great idea with the milk carton! And I love the "bugs", I am now on the lookout for the dragonfly quicklet eyelets. Have not seen those before. thanks
