Description:

Make 3 ATC's for 2 partners (so a total of 6 cards) with the peeled paint technique.

  1. Apply a layer of acrylic paint on your card. Let it dry.
  2. Stamp an image.
  3. Put petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or candle wax on top of your picture, but not on your whole picture.
  4. Apply another coat of paint in an different color and let it dry.
  5. Then wipe away the Vaseline or if you used candle wax, use your heatgun to warm the wax and remove it. You will see some pieces of the stamp and de first color. Now you can do step 3 and 4 all over again until you think that you are finished. You can embellish as you want.

This is a international swap, if you have a rating below 4,5: don't sign up, newbies are welcome if I can read your profile.

i just learned about this technique from an altered art book i was reading!!! i am so excited to try it...count me in :)

cookiebear 04/ 7/2007 #

This sounds like fun, even for "newbies" to the technique! :-D Count me in as well. :o)

cindynvb 04/ 8/2007 #

I Love your directions, makes the swap very easy to understand and join. I've been wanting to try this technique, this is just the "push" I needed, count me in!

cindynvb 04/11/2007 #

Hi, I think you need to add a step, before you put on the petroleum jelly you should coat the cardstod/card with gel medium so it won't sink in. I didn't and I can't get all the petroleum jelly off!!

Alphenquilts 04/13/2007 #

cindynvb, I've never had problems with removing the pertoleum jelly! Acrylic paint is a sort of plastic layer of paint if it is dry ( I don't know how to say it well, I'm not a native speaker). So I don't know why you couldn't remove all the jelly. I know the card will stay a bit greasy, but it never bothered me.....

this looks fun but i think i will try to make one before i sign up so i know i will be able to do it.

cindynvb 04/16/2007 #

mine are all ready to go. I can't wait to see what you all came up with. Cindynvb

redwing480 04/17/2007 #

If you wipe the card with a baby wipe after removing the petroleum jelly, it will get rid of the "greasiness"

Alphenquilts 04/17/2007 #

Thanks Redwing480 for the tip to use babywipes!

Ok, time for a silly question ;) When you're stampin the image onto the painted card, are you to use stamp ink or using the acrylic again? Thanks for any input!

RudeNun 04/21/2007 #

Has anyone tried the wax w/the heat gun?

Alphenquilts 04/22/2007 #

When I stamp the image, I use StazzOn ink. I hope everyone can make sense of my directions :-(

StuffbySteph 04/22/2007 #

StuffbySteph 04/23/2007 #

I don't know what happened?? Yesterday I was a participant, today I had to re-join? Weird.... and confusing?

I tried this technique this morning. I painted three pages of water color paper, stamping different images on each page with regular inks. I'm ready to restamp the second layer of paint this evening and add a third layer of paint. It is another way of producing background layers to be used in the future--I started off with full sheets of cardstock and will cut them down to size later. Like Alphenstamp said, the vaseline does come off the layers of acrylic paint easily--but I will also try the babywipe tip. I could get used to this technique and have already shared the ideas with teachers to use at school it's a great sensory activity!

CazR and Lori Eb - your cards go out today! :) Joan

I have posted pics (don't look if you want to be surprised!).

joanandemma 05/24/2007 #

A gentle reminder - don't forget to put your info on the back of the cards. Once received, I put the ATCs in a box that I like to look through from time to time. If there's no identifying info on the back I'll never remember who did the art!

:) Joan

Starwatcher 05/26/2007 #

CazR and joanandemma, yours was put in the mail but due to the holiday weekend, it may not go out of this area (June Lake CA) until Tuesday. Sorry. Got delayed while on the trip and was making sure they were the best they could be. Fun swap. Interesting technique. I hope you find them worth the wait!

joanandemma 06/ 4/2007 #

Starwatcher - thanks for the cards, they arrived today. I especially like the royal blue/taupe green colour combo, very striking.
:) Joan
