"Victorian Vanity" and a profile Surprise swap.

Welcome! This is sort of a "side two" to my other swap called "Nature's Whimseys".

This swap, like the other, is about the many curious oddities one may find in someone's special "treasure chest" where they keep their favorite trinkets, whimseys and knick knacks.

This swap is similar to a Whimsey Jar swap, except you will instead be using an old tin or cigar box. You're encouraged to decorate the box or tin either in a Vintage theme or customized to the recipients profile. If you use a tin, it should be about the size of standard cigar box.

A standard Cigar box is about: 8" x 8-1/2" x 1-1/2" high

You may use a larger box or a box of similar size in a different shape. (such as decreased length and increased depth.) Micheals has excellent blank wood and paper mache boxes priced from $2.99 - $5.99 if you'd like to go that route. Or you could use what you have sitting around or swing by the thrift shop.

Your goal is to fill the box with Victorian and Vintage themed whimseys. There is no price limit or minimum. But please don't send dangerous or dirty items. Examples of things you can include are:

  • lace or ribbon scraps
  • vintage jewelry or jewelry findings
  • old photos, Vintage postcards, poems, elegant letters
  • Handmade collectibles: ATCs, decorated matchboxes, dotees, ect.
  • vanity items
  • scent satchels (Check recipient profile for allergies and preferences)
  • Vintage buttons, needle cards, pin chushions, sewing notions,
  • Tiny vintage ceramic metal or bone china animals or figures
  • feathers, pins, gloves, miniature books, vintage ephemera, skeleton keys, unusual trinkets and findings, ect.

Be creative! The box must be FILLED.

You're also to add one profile surprise. It is SENDER's CHOICE! It can be store bought or handmade. Doesn't matter so long as it is based off of the recipient's profile.

I will be giving plenty of time for sign ups to allow time to save up some change for postage and find whimsey's to send.

I will be emailing a week before sign up ends to remind everyone. And I will PM again a week before the send deadline as well. Any questionable swappers will be removed prior to assigning partners.

Due to postage, this swap is USA-only. However, if there is enough interest in it. I will host it again as an International Swap. :)

Is there a price limit??

MyAliceFair 02/26/2009 #

No, there is no price limit. However, items need to not be trash.

Vintage/used items are fine so long as they are sanitary and not broken.

Metals can be tarnished (for that old look) but must be clean and prefferably no rust (for safety reasons).

But in general, the idea is "Victorian Whimsey" which would be to hold to the idea of sentimental little trinkets and whimseys of odd assortments. Lace, jewelry, a skeleton key perhaps, a solitary doll's tea cup perhaps... An elegant letter. Or dried and pressed flowers. Handmade whimseys like cards, matchboxes, lockets, ect. Even Dotees. Thimbles, ect. Small metal toy soldiers or animals. Things of that nature. Maybe a souvenire token or vintage photo?

Imagine you found some woman's little keepsake box or treasure chest in an attic... What would you imagine would be in it? That sort of thing.

These items don't have to be of a particular value so much as theme and quality. They can be things made from your stash or found in antique stores, thrift shops, yard sales, ect. Be creative.

Just joined this swap, I'm very excited! I love old things, and loved as a child to rummage through the many boxes my Mom kept around the house- broken jewelry was always fascinating!
