QnT CROSS in STAR block

2-13-22 thru 3-13-22

--one block each round

--one partner

We have a lovely old quilt made from these blocks which has inspired me to make a new version. This swap version will be a scrappy quilt block using one print for star, one print for cross and one white fabric for background. You may use coordinating prints for star and cross or contrasting ones.

Block size 10 ½ inches when mailed

CUT FABRIC:

White (4) 2 ½ X 2 ½ inch squares for corners (tone on tone white or plain white)

White (4) 3 X 3-inch squares to make half-square-triangles

Print fabric for cross (5) 2 ½ X 2 ½ square (small prints are best)

Print fabric for star (8) 2 ½ X 2 ½ inch squares (small to medium prints best)

Print fabric for star (4) 3 X 3-inch squares to make half-square-triangles

STEP 1: Making half-square triangles.

a. (on wrong side) Mark a diagonal line from upper left corner to lower right corner of each 3 X 3-inch white square

b. Place each marked white square on top (right sides together) of the 3 X 3-inch print squares

c. Stitch ¼ inch on either side of the drawn line

d. Cut on the line

e. Open and press the 2 half-square triangles (aka: HST)

f. Square each HST UP TO 2 ½ x 2 ½ INCHES

STEP 2: Begin to assemble the cut pieces and the HST’s to resemble the picture on the swap. Use a ¼ inch seam allowance.

Layout =

Row 1: white square, HST, print square, HST reversed, white square (across top of block)

Row 2: HST, star print, cross print, star print, HST reversed (next row down)

Row 3: star print, cross print, cross print, cross print, star print (third row down)

Row 4: HST, star print, cross print, star print, HST (fourth row down)

Row 5: white, HST, star print, HST, white (bottom of block)

STEP 3: press the completed block

STEP 4: send it off to your partner

Every round will be senders’ choice of colors.

Swap-on!

Several years ago the quilt group at our church made a quilt out of these blocks and it was beautiful. It was a gift for one of the church members so each one of us made a block from our own fabrics and my friend finished putting it together. I love this block.

@Fabriqueen me too....I love it as well and hope we have enough interest to accumulate lots of blocks.

I am thinking about making a quilt with this block from batik fabrics with white or with black.
