Description:

This is an International Swap. Newbies Welcome.

Exchange a letter describing the oldest book you own.

Discuss anything about it - For instance - if you've actually read it, or, what shape it's in.. the title, age, synopsis, or, any little memory you have about it.. and anything else you can think of to say .. Those thoughts above, were just examples.

Please make this letter at least one page long.

Oh - and - The book does not have to be hardcover.
I was just trying to be alliterate. Paperback is fine.
Just as long as it is the oldest book you own.

Since this swap has no real intrinsic value, it is open to Newbies.

Ooo! I love this letter idea. I'm already pulling my favorite old book off of the shelf to ruminate on. It is tempting to write about my second oldest books though, which are a well-worn set of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary.

(P.S. There didn't seem to be any limitations to newbies joining this swap. I am not new to swapping, but am new to swapbot. If you feel any concern about me please feel free to check out my Etsy.com site which is linked from my profile. Although this doesn't demonstrate past swapping experience, I hope it does indicate my general reliability.)

Hi Ikyoto - Thanks for reminding me about the Newbie choice. I'll amend that, now. Welcome aboard! Thanks for joining in.

MAM 04/23/2007 #

Oh this should be a fun swap. I adore old books, I love to comb the antique shops for interesting old books. And I love the title of this swap! Too cute. Most of my older copies are still in boxes in my parents' basement, but I have a few that made the move that will be perfect. I sat down in front of the bookshelves last night and pulled all the old hardcovers down. Think I found the oldest of the bunch. Can't wait to get started on this one! Thanks slamophile for coming up with such a fun swap.

slamophile 04/23/2007 #

Wow, MaM - Thanks for the good words. Ohhh - that "oldest one of the bunch" sounds so yummy!

I sure hear ya about the boxfull of books. My poor garage is filled with them. I've been going thru the boxes, trying to whittle down them down ... but, seems I cannot part with books!

Thanks again, MaM - and, super thanks for angeling that other swap. :-)

Got your letter yesterday, slamophile. I love those old readers, too. I appreciated hearing what you were thinking as you paged through it. Thanks!

slamophile 05/ 6/2007 #

Oh, whew - Glad you dudn't think it was a totally lame letter! Thanks. :-)

slamophile 05/ 6/2007 #

Just a reminder - Tomorrow, March 7, is the last day to send out this swap. I see many people have not sent. Please do! Thanks.

slamophile 05/ 6/2007 #

.. sigh....... I meant MAY 7...

MAM 05/ 7/2007 #

Kat and malcido, I sent yours off this morning. I hated having to wait until the last day, but I was out of town all last week, and forgot to pack envelopes and 39cent stamps (remembered the postcard stamps but not the letter stamps). But I made it and got them to the post office this morning. You're both pretty close, so they should get there in the next couple of days.

MichelleMarie 05/ 7/2007 #

Kat and Veenmol your letters went out this morning! I'm sorry for sending on the last day. Hope you like them!

Saor 05/ 7/2007 #

Sent to Bedlam2Night & ikyoto. They are coming from Ireland.

Ikyoto 05/ 7/2007 #

Sent my letters today! I hope Bedlam2Night and MAM enjoy reading them when they arrive.

SummerLion 05/ 8/2007 #

Vade Mecum, I got your letter today. I really enjoyed your thoughts on SciFi... and your comment about "undiluted essence of landscape" cracked me up. Thanks!

MAM 05/10/2007 #

Susan T in PA, I received a lovely letter yesterday from you (I didn't see a username anywhere, but you know who you are). How fun to have such an old edition of Alice in Wonderland! I enjoyed my little read during lunch today.

slamophile 05/10/2007 #

Kat! - Thank you so much for a most engrossing letter about the 1911 - 1919 books. Fascinating. As I was reading your letter, I was thinking how I'd love to read those books... and, when you included the link, it was a much appreciated surprise. I definately will follow that link. I just love antiquarian books. Thanks, very much, again!

slamophile 05/10/2007 #

oh, ps.. kat.. thanks for the stickers.. they are pretty - i've never seen those.. thank you for those too - altho you certainly didn't have to do that! - but - thank you very much!

MAM 05/11/2007 #

ikyoto, Your letter arrived yesterday and I read it today during lunch. (I've found a new way to enjoy Swap-Bot while at work, opening my letters during lunch ;D) I've never read the book, nor have I seen any of the movie versions, but now I want to see if I can track down an older copy like that to read. I liked the photocopies you included. And thank you also for the bookmark, I am reading a new book right now,and missplaced my bookmark, so its being dog-eared. Now I can use this one.

Saor 05/12/2007 #

I got a great letter from Summerlion. It reminded me of reading my Grandfather's old encyclopaedias and my dad's ancient dictionary when I was a child. And the recipe for Pot Pourri was a nice idea.

MichelleMarie 05/12/2007 #

Susan T. in Pa I received your lovely letter. Thank you!

Ikyoto 05/13/2007 #

Saor- Received your letter on Friday, and it took me right back to the first time of both reading the book and seeing the movie (in about jr. high school). The great thing about having an old book that is so well known is the strong connections it brings between people over various generations. Thanks for the nice long letter.

Bedlam2Night 05/14/2007 #

I'm Susan T. in PA.....somewhat new to the swap thing and that I should ID myself with user name....sorry...but I am learning :)
