What's an altered playing card then?
Swap Coordinator:Cloverst (contact)
Swap categories: Miscellaneous  Art  Artist Trading Card (ATC)
Number of people in swap:45
Last day to signup/drop:June 7, 2007
Date items must be sent by:July 4, 2007
Number of swap partners:3

This swap is for all those who have wanted to try making altered playing cards but have never made one before in their life!

This swap is also open to those wanting to practice their altering skills with no high expectations.

Practice makes perfect so 2 APC's to 3 partners 6 APC's in total.

The theme is artists choice but here are some suggestions for themes:

  • Cherubs
  • Disney
  • Tim Burton
  • Famous historical people
  • Movies
  • Music

They don't all have to be on the same theme.

There's no expectations of a certain level of skill here as everyone has to start somewhere. The APC's in the picture are by Marlene Freeman. Personally I have never tried APC's so this is a first for me too.

Traditionally APC's have the suit and number still visable somewhere on the card. If you have a collection already and are looking for specific cards, please state which ones in the discussion so your partner can prepare.

International. Newbies welcome. Those with more than 1 no-send in the past 6 months to contact me before hand or they'll be removed.

Happy swapping!

Just a note to those who watch the list of people in the swap, I ban after sign-up so that they cannot rejoin

So basically take a playing card and do whay you will with it! Stick bits on, cut bits out, paint, draw, stamp..... The possibilities are endless as long as the card remains the same size.

toni 05/ 6/2007 #

Do the playing cards have to be ATC sized (2.5 x 3.5)?

Cloverst 05/ 6/2007 #

Toni - as long as it is a playing card and the suit and number is visable then it's fine.

SharonF 05/ 6/2007 #

Now this is coo! Cloverst

Cocoa 05/ 6/2007 #

Thanks, looking forward to this swap. Cocoa

BetsyG 05/ 7/2007 #

Sounds like fun. ATC - APC - Basically the same idea, just must be a playing card. Count me in.

user6923 05/ 8/2007 #

I've been too intimidated to try the "altered" things but this looks like the right time to give it a try. Thanks for doing the swap.

user7902 05/17/2007 #

I've never tried an 'altered' thing either, but have always admired the images I have seen, so I am going to take the bull by the horns and have a go....

Tryph 05/23/2007 #

Cool! I have an incomplete deck that is just a smidgen too small to qualify as a true ATC and I'm glad to be able to use them. This will be a great way to get my feet wet in the world of ATC. Thanks for this.

ellie 05/25/2007 #

this swap looks like a lot of fun

inky 05/30/2007 #

This is absolutely one of my favorite things to do. I'm going to have to get mine out and see which ones I need. THESE ARE FUN!!!!

Susi 05/31/2007 #

what do you think about an APC doll? I have made these before and they are great fun! I'll send up a picture if anyone is interested in what I mean...(btw, the doll folds up into the same size size as the card, whis usually the same size of an ATC) susi

VJP 05/31/2007 #

I have admired the ATC's and other altered items on here, but not being an "artist" I was too intimidated to give it a go. However...(deep breath) I think this is the one for me!! I will need all of the time given so I can make them, fret, remake them, and then make extras to send just in case I really screwed up!! LOL!!!!

firebirdgirl65 06/ 2/2007 #

Thank you for doing this I am ready to make my first and jump in with both feet. I hope they like them wish me luck.

spinjenny 06/ 2/2007 #

So are standard US playing cards ATC sized? I've been looking at my old packs and new ones in the stores and here (UK) the standard width seems to be 2.25".

whatmattersmost 06/ 3/2007 #

I would love to do this! Not sure exactlly how to do it but willing to try.

Cloverst 06/ 4/2007 #

susi I've seen APC/ATC dolls before I think they are cute!

Although this is a beginners swap, please let's still try to do our best. My other half received (in a non beginners swap) APC's with nothing more than old personal photos sellotaped on O.o

Cloverst 06/ 4/2007 #

A cool idea to try is sandpapering the card to remove some of the shine and rubbing chalk in.

Another is to soak the cards in tea or coffe. Dry them out of course :)

blessingstoewe 06/ 6/2007 #

Could we use round cards? Or are you wanting the more traditional ATC size?

hayleyk 06/ 9/2007 #

Can we do collages on them?

Cloverst 06/ 9/2007 #

Partners have been assigned, sorry for the delay. If you have any questions about your partners taste please ask your partner. If you have any questions about the swap please ask away I'll be around to answer. Thanks for taking part in this swap

Yes you can collage! Any playing cards are ok by me but you may still like to check with your partners :)

inky 06/ 9/2007 #

I have all the face cards and aces but no numbers.... NUMBER card would be nice....any suit. ")

Miss Chrissy, Butterfly, and DarkMutinousShannon: Canada Post got your letters today!

spinjenny 06/15/2007 #

inkybru, your APCs arrived today. They are wonderful - very imaginative and creative. I love Bogey, of course, as Casablanca is there in my profile. What you couldn't know is that I look out of my window here at a 120 year old pear tree, so the pears are very appropriate for me too. Don't worry about the colours - there is a big difference between, say, a notebook with a sludgy colour cover and using the real colours of a natural object. Thanks!

spinjenny 06/15/2007 #

P.S. Sharon wrote on the envelope, for customs purposes, "Cards. No value." How totally untrue!!! :-)

BetsyG 06/15/2007 #

inkybru, your cards arrived today, and I love them. I'm still working on Leenda77, ddmardd, and Ellie's cards. Hope to have them out soon.
