3 ATCs to 2 Members, 6 ATCs total. This is an international swap.

I am starting a series of ATC swaps based on the techniques taught in Bernie Berlin’s book “Artist Trading Cards Workshop: Create, Collect, Swap published in December 2006 by North Light Publishers. I submitted this idea to the forums here on Swap-bot and there has been interest expressed so here is the second swap.

If you already own this book perhaps you are itching to try some new techniques. Maybe you would like to see how others interpret this technique, so let’s swap ATCs with each other.

And if you don’t yet own this book and you want to learn some new and interesting techniques then perhaps you’d consider buying the book and joining our swap!

Before you commit to this swap please already own the book or have access to a copy from your library. Make sure you have the necessary tools and ingredients on hand before the swap closes. It would not be fair to sign up then not make the ATCs and say “I don’t own the book or the right materials.

This is the THIRD ATC swap in this series and this time we will try the technique “Leafing Pen Resist featured on page 18-19. The necessary ingredients for this swap are: watercolor paper, metallic leafing pen (Krylon), brush, liquid watercolor paint. I am making optional the last step to further decorate the background paper with black ink and a rubber stamp (not all the wonderful examples in the book have that part used on them.) Then to finish the ATC, you will need your choice of elements to embellish with, ranging from rubber stamped images, collage papers, paper ephemera, and/or three dimensional embellishments.

Due to the nature of this book being copyrighted and the fact that the whole book is based on teaching the reader art techniques I do not feel comfortable posting the full directions of this technique online as it could very well be against the law (a copyright violation).

The book is fantastic. If you don’t yet own it, you can purchase this book online through big bookseller sites or see if your local craft store or rubber stamp store is selling it. The ISBN-10 is 1581808488 and the ISBN-13 is 139781581808483. The book was published in the United State of America. I have no idea what the availability of this book is to foreign countries, but the swap is open to International members so long as you have the book and the materials and want to participate. (Someone told me that anyone can buy online from book vendors but will just pay more in shipping fees.)

Please allow ample time to make these ATCs. I have found through my own experience that when learning a new technique and when using new materials mistakes abound and errors are bound to happen in the experimentation process. So please give yourself enough time to make these ATCs so you can send out high quality work as well as send the ATCs out by the deadline.

Now the rules for who can join. Due to problems with “flakers on Swap-bot I have tightened my hosting requirements which as resulted in a very high compliance rate (hooray). I will not accept newbies to Swap-bot (sorry)---you must have at least three ratings in your file to join--there are many ATC swaps for newbies that you can join in order to get rated by your swap partners. A person can have no more than one “no send on their file. The minimum rating is 4.7. As host I also can choose to ban anyone for any other reason that I see fit, that is my right.

The date to send the swap by is a rule of this swap. Please follow the rules.

You are free to join this swap and not join future swaps in this series. You are free to not join this one but to join other swaps in this series. You don’t have to sign up for all of them, just the ones you want to do and the ones that you have time to do!

Now that the rules are out of the way I wish you luck and fun while trying this technique.

If you want to read more about this book I have published a book review of it on my blog which you can read here.

Thanks! Have fun!

Sounds intriguing. Hoping to have access to BB's book within the next week or so and will decide then whether participating will be feasible. :0)

I loved this technique, it was so cool! My daughter and I worked on all three techniques this evening. The Baby wipes and this one turned out the best! I can't wait to send them! Thanks Christine for Hosting!! KV

I haven't been able to find liquid watercolours locally (I'm in the UK), and mail ordering a set of colours is too expensive for me right now. Will ordinary watercolours, or inks or diluted acrylics, work as an alternative for this technique? If someone can let me know in time, I might be able to join.

FarStarr 06/16/2007 #

I used plain old watercolors the first time and the color looked great until they dried and the color just kinda disappeared. Then I tried inks and that worked great!

I just moved the dates farther away for sign up and due date to send out by. I now realize I put this series of challenges too close together and am giving us more breathing room so we can make high quality work and not rush.

Thanks for the info, Far Starr, and thanks for moving the dates, Christine. That gives me time to experiment with differnet inks before the sign-up deadline to see whether I can still join in.

I've used liquid watercolors before butI didn't want to buy any just now, so I mixed my own. Now, this is not exact, I squeezed about a one inch ribbon of watercolor and added around 3 tablespoons of water, put it in a closed container and shook it up. I ended up with some really vivid colors. The lees water you use, the more vivid your colors will be. The colors will look washed out if you add too much water. Best to start off with a small amount of water and add a little more as needed. The results of this technique are just so cool looking.

Okay I finally put the finishing touches onto my ATCs today so they went out on the deadline from me in USA to Reb in USA and to Cha Sch in Germany. I hope you enjoy them. The colors are hot, hot, hot and I plan to try to upload the scans to my blog tonight if anyone wants to peek.

Two things from your hostess:

  1. Please take the time to rate the swappers who sent you ATCs. (Some of my recipients are not rating me so I know some of you are not doing ratings.)

  2. If anyone was flaked upon for this swap please PM me with the person's name. I want to ban anyone from my future swaps who flakes on past swaps of mine.
