Description:

You will send a letter to two partners but you will be under some constraints.

First, select a book. It can be any book. You can select it at random or choose your favorite book. It should be at least 200 pages long. It should be in English. You might not want to use a mathematics textbook.

Secondly, turn to page 22 and write out the first five nouns you find. Skip ahead to avoid repeats. Feel free to use proper nouns if you like. You may use or omit pronouns.

Thirdly, turn to page 87 and write out the first five verbs you find. Make sure that they are all different.

Next, turn to page 171 and write out the first five adjectives and/or adverbs you find.

When you do this, go ahead to the following pages if you need to.

Next, go to the copyright page and note the name of the city. If you find more than one city, select the one that pleases you most. Finally write down the first name of the author.

You now have a place name, a person's name plus your five nouns, five verbs, and five adjectives or adverbs. I recommend that you write them all down and then use them to write a letter to your match.

Make sure that the letter is about you. You might have to use your imagination to fit in some of these nouns and verbs. You might have to stretch the truth. This is partly creative writing and partly an informative letter. It's a mix of fact and fiction.

Make sure that you write at least two paragraphs. You may use the word processor or write by hand. Word processing might make it easier.

This is a chance to exercise your creativity but to have a "word hoard" that you must integrate into your letter.

Questions? Ready, steady, go!

I have questions.... About the letter:

Do the letters have to be different? As in from two different books, or can we use the same words only write two different letters? Or can the letters both be the same? So you would only write one letter really and send it to two different people?

About joining: Can anyone join, there is not rating requirement?

LadyKianna 03/16/2010 #

Can a newbie join?

CraftyTweetie 03/16/2010 #

I was wondering the same thing as "Spin" was. Can we use the same book, sets of words, and letter for both partners, or must they be different? Thanks. :)

Love this idea! Are we supposed to indicate in some way which words are from the "word hoard"?? Like underlining or....?

ShyRaven 03/16/2010 #

great idea!

AndreaJ 03/16/2010 #

I'm putting it on my watchlist. It sounds fascinating!

Rubyfreckles 03/16/2010 #

is it supposed to be more of a story or a chatty letter? and what do you do with the name of the person and name of the city if the letter is supposed to be about ourselves? :) thanks

user2637 asked the same thing I was wondering. Should we indicate which words are from the book? That would add some extra geeky fun.

I loved this swap too! I would like to see the whole collection, not just two. It was fun and very rewarding.
