Description:

This is a swap for amigurumi. That's basically it! Open category, though please respect your partner's phobias &/ or religious beliefs. I will leave a long time between partners being assigned and the send date so that you can have time to message your partner or have a good look at their profile. Having said that, please don't ask for only one type of creature/ item.

I want this to be really fun to make and to receive so try to do as good a job as you can. If you're new to crochet, maybe do a practice run or two before making the final version. :)

You will have one partner and send one amigurumi to them. If you are not familiar with the amigurumi thing, check out this group on flickr!

I imagine the finished items to be at least 10-15cm/ 4-6 inches (but PLEASE don't get the ruler out and rate a 3 if its not dead-on!!) on their longest dimension. If you like to make the very mini type of amis, please make two for your partner.

This is open to anyone with a rating of 4.5+ - though i reserve the right to ban anyone i feel is dodgy. Newbies (unrated or rated only in online/ email swaps) please message me when you sign up. Anyone with a recent 1 rating, please be aware i will likely contact you to ask for an explanation, but i'm quite aware that these are sometimes given out unfairly.

I wish I could crochet just a little more well... All I can do is one type of stitch (is it even called that when speaking of crocheting? ;)) in rows so I always end up with a plain square or rectangle...

I could not find a site that would explain the way you are supposed to do the spheres AND that I would understand ;) Any tips on this? - Thanks :)

alicepalace 08/23/2007 #

I found a link about crocheting in the round: joining rounds

But what it doesn't explain is, that if you want to make a ball/ egg shape, you need to start with a circle, into which you make your first stitches (instead of into a beginning chain of stitches). Here is another link which may help: magic ring

It sounds like you already know single crochet (US term; UK calls it double crochet, just to confuse you more). These tutorials are really good for the basic stitches.

Hope this helps! :)

Vlcatko 08/23/2007 #

Aaah, thank you :)

I will definitely look at these and if anything good comes out of it (meaning I am able to crochet something nice) I am so going to join this swap :D

That Magic Ring Tutorial is fab & too easy. My most hated part of any round crochet project is starting the circle. Thanks for posting that link!

Hiya,

Just in case i forget to put a note tomorrow evening (likely - i will be packing), i'm going away for a week from Monday (27th) to the following Monday (3rd Sept) and almost certainly won't be checking up on Swap-bot in that time. If anyone PMs me, i'll likely not reply till the 4th of Sept. Just lettin you know, so you don't think i've done a runner!

Eeep! & Yay! Lots of people joined.. I'll spend some time this evening going through profiles etc and answering the PMs some of you have sent. But first i need to got some food in the house - going on holiday is lovely but coming back to NO FOOD is bad. :)

I've joined the swap and it sounds like a blast! It'll be fun to have an excuse to work on something cute and fun. :)

My only concern is that 10-15cm/ 4-6 inches is pretty small for an amigurumi. That might be the size of the body, but not from head to foot! I just looked through a bunch of my amigurimi books (both American and Japanese), and most of them are bigger than that if they have legs. Would that be OK or should I stick with a simpler and smaller pattern?

alicepalace 09/ 3/2007 #

Hiya, I looked on etsy to see how big other people's were and this seemed more-or-less a normal size-ish - but bigger is fine! I was more worried that some people would make the really tiny mini-ami type thing, than i was about people making them too big! :) I'll change the description a little bit..

Cheers, Alice

kusine 09/ 3/2007 #

Thanks, Alice! I was worried that I'd get dinged for going over. I can't wait! I may have to make a few in advance, just for fun. :)

alicepalace 09/ 4/2007 #

Here is a link to an amigurumi crochet-along. I may join, it looks like fun!

Beckster 09/ 9/2007 #

I just finished my first amigurumi! It's a gold fish! I love it.

I've started on my second...a pink teddy bear.

mammasan 09/14/2007 #

I just joined this group and want to say that I make amigurumi of all sizes. The smallest I make are teddy bears to wear as Christmas pins and ornaments for trees that are about 3 1/2 inches tall to large cats at about 12 inches to the new dolls at 17inches. I would make a swap item to the normal size of about 6 inches I think. The point is that when you find what your swap partner likes you would make it to a size agreed upon between you. If anyone would like to see what I make here is the link to my flickr site. Thanks....http://www.flickr.com/photos/43857545@N00/sets/72157600025298249/

Not long now! I'm getting impatient. :)

I Love making amigurumis, and it's a wonderful idea that one of my creations can travel from Argentina to some place in the world! Thank you for this swap!

alicepalace 09/27/2007 #

Hi all. Unfortunately, we may have a flaker in this swap, who goes by the name of 'Me', aka 'MrsGraves'. Fortunately (?!), she was supposed to send to me, so no harm done to you guys. :)

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any worries about anyone else in the swap.

alicepalace 09/27/2007 #

Oh yeah, i meant to say about/ to MrsGraves: if you are reading this, please just contact me and tell me what the deal is! If you've genuinely sent, lemme know. If you've disappeared, lemme know. Just one sentence will doooo!

(I have PM'd and e-mailed MrsGraves/ 'Me', because all her details are gone from her profile.)

alicepalace 10/22/2007 #

How are we all doing? I accidentally pressed the 'sent' button on my Swaps page when I haven't actually sent yet (no pop-up asking me to confirm!).. oops. I'm still making but mine should go out early next week.

I hope everyone's having fun with this!

mammasan 10/22/2007 #

This was my first experience with swapping. Can't wait to find out what my receiver thinks about what I sent.

alicepalace 11/ 4/2007 #

The deadline is tomorrow and there are a lot of 'not sent' people still. I'm going to extend it to Friday to give people a chance to catch up. If you aren't going to make it, please ensure you contact your partners and let them know what is going on. Thanks. Alice

alonalonzo 11/ 4/2007 #

mammasan...your ami package will be in the mail tommorrow. I hope you like it. Look out for it.

mammasan 11/ 5/2007 #

alonalonzo....thank you for the warning...I will watch my mail box carefully. I'm really exited.

mammasan 11/ 5/2007 #

I'm so excited I can't even spell...hahaha

alonalonzo 11/ 5/2007 #

mammasan...posted your amigurumi package this afternoon. It is in a padded/bubble manilla envelope. Sorry I got a little carried away with the packing tape, but I wanted to make sure it was really safely sealed (smile). Let me know when it arrives and enjoy!

mammasan 11/14/2007 #

Alonalonzo....I just received my package...thank you! thank you! thank you! The sweetest little gifts I have ever receive. If I told you that this is the first time in my 54 years that I have ever had anything made for me would you believe me? Crafters are always giving but never receive. Now I now how my receivers feel. Thanks again! mammasan
