Description:

I'm intrigued by the swaps for inchie art, but I'm (probably unreasonably) worried that people might not like it if I sent them photo inchies--so I thought I'd start a swap where that's the whole point! Will you join me?

You'll have 3 partners and you'll send each partner 8 inchies--1 inch x 1 inch squares from photos that you yourself have taken. Please back your squares with cardstock or something similarly sturdy. If you want some of your cardstock to make a border, you can cut your photo smaller so that the finished product is still 1 x 1.

You can alter your photos digitally if you'd like. You can also embellish your inchies with extras, too. But neither altering nor embellishing is required for the swap: simply cut and backed photos are perfectly fine.

Other details: 1) Newbies with completed profiles are welcome. 2) Swappers with a rating below 4.7 will be dropped before partners are assigned. 3) This is an international swap.

Let's share some teeny tiny photos!

Great idea! I'm in! Cyn

The entire thing (photo + mount) is 1 inch x 1 inch or just the photo?

beckra 08/31/2007 #

The whole thing should be 1 inch x 1 inch. So if you want your mounting to also be a border (rather than just a backing) you could make your photo a little smaller than 1 x 1. Does that make sense? I've altered the description above to (hopefully) make that clearer.

squintgrad 08/31/2007 #

great idea! I'm in, too. Stephanie

HappyCactus 08/31/2007 #

let me make sure I get this - I need to crop photos to be 1"x1" - and mount them? Does the photo need to be digitally resized or can it just be a portion of the whole?

beckra 08/31/2007 #

Hello, graphics_cactus! Yeah, crop a photo to 1 x 1 and put some cardstock backing on it, and you're good to go! Or, if you'd like, you can crop your photo a little smaller so that some of the cardstock surrounds the photo with a border and the finished product is still 1 x 1. I didn't think about re-sizing a photo to be that tiny on its own, so I assumed people would cut larger photos down to size, but if resizing works for you, that's cool! (I'm sorry if I'm not explaining all of this clearly; I've tried to rewrite the explanation above so that it's more explanatory...) Basically it would be like a photo ATC but 1 x 1 instead of 3.5 x 2.5.

have to join this...always wanted to try inchies but was also concerned about peoples reactions!! this should be fun :)

beenebag 09/ 4/2007 #

I just finished making inchies for another swap and they are soooooo addicting...and I have tons of photos so here I go!!!!

beenebag 09/ 7/2007 #

I just discovered something about my little HP 335 photo printer. I can print full-sized photos 8-up on a 4x6 sheet and they are 1 x 1-7/16!! I used the passport photo function under print options and chose the 25.4mm x 36.4mm setting. I haven't figured out if I can print different pictures on the same sheet like it does with 2-up or 4-up on a page settings...but this is great...I didn't have to go into a photo editor to do anything to my photos...check select and print.

geneinthebattle 09/ 7/2007 #

Does it have to be different sets of inchies per person or we can send same set of inchies?

twobluecrows 09/ 8/2007 #

I'd like different pictures in the sets for each person. I'd also think the inchies don't have to be complete photographs themselves, but can be abstracted by cutting a larger picture into 1x1" pieces, as long as they have some sort of interesting composition to them. Like, cutting a sky picture up that results in a lot of plain blue squares would be pretty useless, not to mention boring, but parts of trees or faces or buildings or piles of fruit or something would be interesting--and that that makes it easier to make 8 different inchies for each partner. If any of you have Jasc Paint Shop Pro it has a really easy "Print Multiples" feature. You choose the pictures you want to print and open them, then in the Files menu, chose Print Multiples and a new window opens with a thumbnail strip on the side with your chosen pics in it, and a blank "sheet" in the middle.

You click and drag the pictures into the sheet and you can resize/reshape them into whatever sizes you need, all different ones on the sheet, and you can drag them several times for duplicates on the sheet, too.

It will automatically position them all on the page, too with the click of a button, depending on the sizes you want it's really useful.

I usually use Photoshop for everything, but I resort to PSP for this feature all the time!

Hello, geneinthebattle--It's perfectly fine to send the same set of inchies to all your partners.

beckra 09/ 8/2007 #

Thanks, twobluecrows/Cyn and beenebag, for the info on shrinking photos down digitally! When I set up this swap, I just assumed that people would be cropping/cutting their photos down to size because I didn't think about digital resizing options....

I just want to remind folks that either cropping or resizing (or a combination thereof) is fare game for the swap!

geneinthebattle 09/ 9/2007 #

Thanks beckra and twoblucrows/Cyn!

I agree with beenebag, this option is also available to Epson Photo R230 printer.

FarStarr 09/10/2007 #

Thanks beckra! What a great way to use up all those photo scraps that I just can't throw out!

huhlaroo 09/13/2007 #

my photo inchies went out to: squintgrad, geneinthebattle, & brandedeclipse! i hope you like them!

lindall 09/14/2007 #

well, i just finished my sets and they will go out in today's mail. i had never heard of "inchies" before so this was my first attempt. i do have lots of photos, thought and i love doing abstract crops with them for ATCs. this was even more fun and challenging. beckra, thanks for the great idea. looking forward to the returns.

beenebag 09/15/2007 #

Sent my cards out today...

yowell 09/17/2007 #

Inchies going to Julie, Tiffany and Susi from Scotland :)

HappyCactus 09/17/2007 #

How is everyone displaying these?

beckra 09/17/2007 #

I thought I might put magnetic backing on them & put them up on my filing cabinet so that I could look at them while I'm at my desk....

yowell 09/18/2007 #

I put mine in a small 'frame'.

yowell 09/18/2007 #

Hi lindall, thanks for the great inchies - got them this morning.:)

FarStarr 09/22/2007 #

INchies have gone out to Jessie-messie-bo-bessie, yowell, and lindall. I can't tell how I displayed them yet...we have to have some secrets..;)

Pokeadot 09/24/2007 #

Sent to twobluecrows, beckra, and peridoticparadox. Hope you like :)

twobluecrows 09/25/2007 #

Displaying inchies: I found plastic slide storage sheets in a craft clearance bin, and they are great for storing inchies! You can put 20 in the ones I got, and there is enough room in each little slide pocket for a chunky inchie, too, so it's versatile, and they fit in a three-ring binder, or I can hang them on the wall.

I used some that I got in a swap last year to embellish a few ATCs and they are real stars in the art!

There are great pictures of inchies in our gallery now! Thanks to lindall and peridoticparadox--how about some more from the rest of y'all?

geneinthebattle 09/25/2007 #

Sorry for being late, sent my mail today to FarStarr, LipsLikeSugar and lindall. I had my photos a little smaller so that I can use the card stock as border. Post office personnel said that you'll receive it in a week's time but please allot two to four weeks, sometimes they're faster (like in a week) sometimes they're super slow (two weeks delay). Please pm me if you received or haven't received my mail.

Thanks a bunch! - Gene

beckra 09/26/2007 #

I'm glad everyone seems to be having a good time! I posted some of my inchies on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/beckra/1398662655/

If you are one of the partners of brandedeclipse who hasn't received your Inchies yet, please contact me. Her swaps are being angeled due to her illness. Cyn
