Description:

Half Square Triangle = 3” finished block with one side dark print, one side light print

1 partner to receive 30 finished 3” HST’s

For those of us addicted to the 4 ½” variety of these pretty blocks, here is an opportunity to get creative with smaller HST’s.

Start with two 3 ½” print fabric charms (charms = a square cut of 100% cotton fabric, in this case 3 ½”). Place the two charms right sides together. Using your ruler and a pencil, draw a straight line on the back of the light print from the upper left hand corner down to lower right hand corner. Stitch a scant ¼” seam either side of the pencil line. Cut on the pencil line. Press gently so as not to stretch the block. Trim the dog ears, and then trim the block to 3 inches using the center seam line as your base. Always trim and press for success.

The goal is to get as many different Mini HST’s as possible so please try to use a print only once unless you match it to a different print the second time. No solid fabrics.

We’ve found that the higher the contrast between the dark side and the light side, the better the HST’s work in any project.

Note that once you receive your 3” Mini HST’s you can also cut them to a smaller size if you want. When cutting them smaller be sure to use the center seam line as your base so both sides of the HST end up equal.

Swappers must have at least 10 snail-mail swaps to their credit, and a 4.8 rate or better.

I will angel this swap but will publicize if you flake. Please don’t make me tattle!

Any questions or concerns are welcome, please PM me.

I was wondering... Would it maybe be better to cut the beginning squares at 4" rather than 3.5"? I have heard that one should add 7/8" to the finished size for seam allowance when cutting triangles, and I know from experience with the larger HST swaps (love 'em!) that there is not much to trim off after they are sewn (5" cut, trim to 4.5" to finish at 4").

Oops, perhaps I didn't read this carefully enough... Did you mean trim to 3" to finish at 2.5"? Never mind me...I'm still waking up this morning!

Thank you alysowl so much for your input...I've found that if I sew a scant 1/4" seam allowance I don't have much to trim off (just like you said)....personally I won't mind what size fabric charms we start with as long as the end result is a 3" HST.....to be truthful with you I plan to cut some of the Mini HST's I get in this swap series down even further for a mini art quilt I want to make......thank you again for your helpful input!

Hey girlfriend!!! This is something new to me, but as usual you always come up with such fun swaps:)))

Um....to be sure I understand fully how to do this:) Do we sew a scan 1/4" seam on each side of the line or just on one side (one seam)? I'm trying to picture how these turn out in my head, lol.

Looking forward to getting into making something new once again!!!
