Description:

Seeing a couple of swaps recently which involve matchboxes suddenly reminded me of a fund-raiser we used to do at the playgroup I once ran. The children were sponsored to fill a matchbox with as many different items as possible; I remember grains of rice, flakes of rabbit food, pins, etc. So how about a swap in which you fill a matchbox with lovely little thing? A button, a bow, a badge, a picture, a few beads or sequins, a tiny teddie, I'm sure you can think of lots of things. You don't have to get sponsors or talk to the teacher about your items, just choose nice things and have fun. If you'd like to decorate the box I'm sure that will add to the pleasure you give. There's no set value so sign up now (but not if you have poor feedback).

^5 THIS IS A GOOD ONE!

user2661 08/30/2006 #

Is this for adults or kids? I'm in if it's adults but I wouldn't want to get any rice!

julieb 08/30/2006 #

what size matchbox?

zenzhey 08/31/2006 #

This is a great idea, thank you for starting this! I wouldnt mind making a 2 partner swap! Anyone else?

mazzam 08/31/2006 #

Lixie- This is for us grownups, no rice from me I promise. The matchbox is just an ordinary small one.I've made a start on one if you'd like to check my blog although some of my bits will need changing if it's not for a knitter. Zenzhey-Shall we leave it at 1 partner for this round then maybe it would be lovely to do a festive one in a couple of months for 2 partners?

mazzam 08/31/2006 #

Oh crikey I managed to get the picture on here!!!Sometimes I startle myself!!!!

memmu 09/ 1/2006 #

This is going to be fun... finding some tiny things to fill up the match box... I think I will enjoy this one :)!!!

user3151 09/ 6/2006 #

Hi. Excuse me, but by "ordinary small one" do you mean the larger matchbox that holds about 250 matches or so? It would measure about 4.75" x 2.5" x 1.5". Or is it the teeny ones that are about 2" long and hold about 32 matches? Not sure what you could fit in the teeny ones, so I just wanted to confirm. This sounds quite interesting and fun. Thank you. Reina

mazzam 09/ 6/2006 #

Just to confirm it's the 32 match size. I hope people will be surprised at what can be fitted in....charms, chains, buttons, beads etc. It's just for fun...cheap and cheerful

user3283 09/ 6/2006 #

This sounds really fun to do. How about not just how many things you can get in, but I was thinking the biggest thing. Some sort of fold out, crazy illustration, pop-up contraption. Although imagining it is a long way from being able to create it. But I reckon it will be fun, and a cheap one to post overseas too!

mazzam 09/ 7/2006 #

Forestmum, that sounds great why not post it?

mazzam 09/ 8/2006 #

Just letting you know I am away next week but will pick up any queries as soon as I get back.

user1699 09/10/2006 #

Darlings, I am amazed at all the cool arty goodies (beads, buttons, stickers, sequins, small papers, surprises) one can fit into a matchbox. Its all set and ready to be mailed out. Can't wait to do this one again.

tamdoll 09/11/2006 #

This should be interesting - I haven't done any swaps yet but wanted to try this one!

user1936 09/13/2006 #

I just finished my little box and cant wait to find out who I send it too!

Ninety 09/15/2006 #

Hi, this is my first swap EVER... I hope you like it, but I am going to need some help in order to know what to do, and to whom I am going to mail the matchbox.

user3677 09/17/2006 #

Hello! I've signed up just to do this one. It sounds like loads of fun. Can't wait to see what's in my box! Even more can't wait to see what I can fill one with to send out!!!

Ividdythou 09/19/2006 #

Just a question - is there going to be any problem sending a matchbox in the mail because of the side of the box (the part when your strike the match)?

Ividdythou 09/19/2006 #

Well, to answer my own question, i tried setting the strip on the side of the box on fire. It doesn't seem to be any more flammable than the rest of the box, which is just plain glossy cardboard.

To stay safe, im going to decorate my box so its not easy recognizable at a matchbox - should it be picked up in customs, hopefully it will help to avoid the assumption that there are matches inside (which are defiantly flammable)

Dieuwertje 09/19/2006 #

Matchbox filled and send. I hope my swap-partner liked her Luciferdoosje (doosje=box) as the Dutchpeople called it.

user1054 09/24/2006 #

Since mine was going to England and i had to fill out Customs forms i decided i would just feel better decorating my match box. Sent my box out today and sure hope it doesn't take forever to get to my swap partner.I hope "Libbybear" finds something in it useful or cute. Sally D in Arizona.

tamdoll 09/27/2006 #

I've sent mine off, this was interesting - trying to find tiny things to fill the box with. How do you accumulate ratings at this site?

mazzam 10/ 1/2006 #

tamdoll; in about a week if you go into view swap there is an option to rate your swap partner, 5 for a good swap down to 1 for nothing received.

user3413 10/ 1/2006 #

Oh my gosh, where has the time gone? Box is filled and ready to be sent out tomorrow, pronto! Hope she likes it :)

charlottenc 10/ 2/2006 #

This was fun, though a bit nerve-wracking for the "artistically challenged" (me)! But I gave it my best shot and hope my swap partner enjoys my efforts. This is my second swap and it was as much fun as my first (the teacup swap). Can't wait to receive my matchbox! I can't even begin to imagine what will be inside...

user3481 10/ 5/2006 #

i recieved my matchbox this morning ;) loved it. decorated lovely thanks zen i love it.

charlottenc 10/ 5/2006 #

Well, my box came yesterday - a bit of a disappointment. Maybe I had this swap wrong? I thought the idea was to take a matchbox and fill it with little stuff. My box had one little doll in it. Oh, well. There's always next time!

TheRehn 10/ 5/2006 #

I have received my box - Thanks Jennifer it's great. I have enjoyed looking at everything in the gallery. I think perhaps your partner got confused, nonparieldolls, but it looks like she tried hard, so ...

charlottenc 10/ 6/2006 #

Oh, I'm not unhappy with it - I think after seeing all the wonderful little things everyone was getting in their boxes, I was a bit disappointed mine only had one item. BUT, I happen to love dolls and this little boy is growing on me! Well, not literally growing on me!!! You know what I mean - he's cute as a bug and I've started thinking of him as a visitor from outer space, ala the Little Prince, who has come to a hostile environment (my home) with the best of intentions and nothing but love in his heart for all mankind... how's that? Better? Better! Swap partner, you done good! Think being sick with my first winter cold might have soured my disposition for a day, too. Isn't he just adorable?!

testarosagirl 10/ 6/2006 #

got my box it had a nice pair of earrings i think the person who sent did not really get what we were supposed to do but they r nice she also failed to put her name but thanks to my partner

zenzhey 10/ 7/2006 #

Hails, I am happy you received the box and liked it. I really had a lot of fun putting it together!I hope you can use some of the things in it! A lot of the beads are quite old. I was amaze at the amount of stuff I could cram in there!

Mazzam, Thank you for setting up this swap! I think it was one of the most fun swaps I have seen out there! Not too pricey but extremely fun to put together!Thank you!

michellelliott 10/ 7/2006 #

I received FOUR matchboxes filled with goodies from Charlotte. They were wonderfully decorated in the four seasons with seasonable items inside each of them. My favorite is the summer box. Thank you, Charlotte. You're very creative and thoughtful. It's obvious that you put a lot of thought, time and creative energy into the four boxes and their contents. M.e.

charlottenc 10/ 8/2006 #

Michelle, glad they arrived safe and you liked them. It turned into four 'cause I showed my first attempt to a friend, who thankfully for you told me the truth - that it was pretty sad! So I tried a few more times and when my friend couldn't decide which one was best, I sent them all! I've really enjoyed this swap. I'm not very creative as a rule and it gave me a chance to do something outside my "comfort zone". Thanks, Michelle - I loved making them!

user3677 10/ 8/2006 #

Zaffron, Thank you so much for my beautifully decorated matchbox and card. They are all such beautiful little beads etc, I'm trying to decide what to use them on! It took me along time to pluck up the courage to open it as it is so beautiful. Thanks again. Izatronic

zenzhey 10/ 9/2006 #

I want to see more of the matchboxes! They sounds all so lovely. Can more people upload images of what they received please?

charlottenc 10/ 9/2006 #

Next time I'll take some pics before sending - didn't think to do that but I see many do it that way (makes sense). I thought the person who gets the item posts a pic of it. Also, guess it wouldn't hurt to gently ask those who are pleased to remember to rate their partners. This was only my second swap, so I'm still trying to build my good "rep" as a swapper. Hoping to find more fun swaps to join!

user3012 10/ 9/2006 #

BitchOnWheels, you did a great job! Loved it. Thank you :)

You and anyone interested can read about what my part in this swap at my blog - blog.zaffron.se. I did upload images to the swap gallery though, so you don't have to look far to see what I got.

mazzam 10/ 9/2006 #

I've just been looking at the gallery too. I'm so happy people have enjoyed this swap and put in such a lot of effort (mostly) I will post a Christmas themed one soon honestly, just want to gather some things together so I can post a photo to give people ideas if they need them. P.s. yes please do post ratings now the option is available. It is quite important and a good way of thanking your partner.

Dieuwertje 10/ 9/2006 #

I recieved a cute package from the UK today. I like to thank the sender but there is no name from the sender on it.

So sender thank you for your Package.

Dieuwertje 10/ 9/2006 #

I cannot give a rate my partner. The link says You are not in this swap ???????????

user1755 10/11/2006 #

I have just received my box back because I included some coins that will no longer be legal tender at the end of October and thought they would be good. I have learnt that I can't put these items through the post and have sent my partner an email explaining to her what has happened but it bounced back (bit like the matchbox). Carolyn if you see this I am so sorry you haven't received my box yet but I aim to get the replacement in the mail before the weekend, I don't get lunch breaks in my job so can't do this any earlier. I promise it will be worth it though.

zenzhey 10/11/2006 #

I received my box from Louise! It's wonderful inside and out! Thank you Louise! I posted pictures in the picture galery!

testarosagirl 10/11/2006 #

zenzhey 10/12/2006 #

Louise, Right at the top of this page, under the name of the swap and right above the picture that was posted to illustrate the swap you should see a link called: Launch gallery slideshow click that and you will get a new winddow with all the images.

Thanks again for the box!

user3515 10/12/2006 #

I'm disappointed - my swap partner that was supposed to send to me has not marked hers as sent and she already has 1 no send. She hasn't responded to the msg I sent either :(

memmu 10/17/2006 #

MELQ35 05/14/2008 #

Hi..Just joined and thought it a shame that there seems to have been no activity for a while! My child has been given a project to fill a small Smartie box with as many items as she can, for sponsership. So far we have 66 items and trying to get to 100!! This site seems great. Would love to swap some goodies in a matchbox with someone... Swap soon, Mel x
