Description:

I'm obsessed with time travel and in love with snail mail. So time travel mail seems like it would sum up the things I want from life. Here's the idea:

Write a time period and location as a comment. The time can be a specific date if you like or an era of some kind but can't be current times (let's say nothing withing the past/next 50 years). The location is also open ended but can't in your own country.

Examples:

  • Ancient Egypt
  • New York in the1920's
  • The moon in the year 2100

You can also create a name for yourself and leave it in your comment (you are welcome to use your own name if you want though.)

When partners are assigned you will write a letter from the place/time you posted to the place/time they posted. Try to come up with some kind of story about why you are writing to them. Are you a renaissance theorist speculating about the years to come and leaving your note in a time capsule? A Professor from the University of Mars doing research on Prehistoric Africa?

The letter should be a minimum of two pages (of normal printer sized paper) but you are encouraged to go on as long as you have ideas.

Try to make both the letter and the envelope look like they come from the time period you are sending form. Obviously in some cases there would be no paper and no English alphabet but do something that at least represents where it's coming from (tea staining, cave painting-style pictures around the edges, futuristic computer font, written on clear acetate sheets etc... have fun with it!)

Anyone with 4.7+ and no recent unexplained 1's or 3's can join. Newbies are welcome but must have a well filled out profile and send me a message in order to sign up.

Happy time-travels!

My name is Halogen Anomaly. I'm from some time around 3050 - we've lost track, in a post-apocalyptic land that was once called Europe.

My name is Sabrina Bonaparte and I live in the time of the French Revolution/time of Napoléon and my life is full of intrigue, revenge and revolution in Paris! (I got obsessed with a book series about Napoléons wife, Josephine :D)

I want to say what a wonderful idea and would join but Im afraid I am not that creative . good luck with this swap .

Halogen 01/ 2/2011 #

No one has to be shy about trying something new! We aren't looking for some kind of amazing short story, just to have fun. You can even base your time/place off a movie/book if that helps with ideas. (Like 'I'm a jedi from a long time ago in a galaxy far far away' or 'I am from Jane Austen era England')

I also got inspired by a book. :)

MorgenSter 01/ 3/2011 #

My name is Alana and i´m a priestess at a lost community in south america. We came years ago from Avalon, but after the island took its rest from humanity , we moved here searching for a new place to practice our magic.

My name is Blædís and I live with my small Norse clan in the new land of iceland. It is a mysterious land to us. We were sailing on our ship when a storm waylaid us here. We are stranded for the time. We are sure that it is close to the lands of the gods as we hear rumblings of gods and titans fighting all of the time. We have had a few raids by dwarves and dragons. Presently all are learning to fight, even the women and children to protect against the raids and even the gods- who are sometimes benevolent and sometimes malicious. If we are to survive it will only be by the muscle on our bones and the spells in our heads.

My name is Bernice. I'm 22 years old and live with my sister and her husband who has a title of a knight. The year is 1902 and I have a secret. I'm in love with the first footman or the manor. It is a difficult position.

mooncrab 01/ 5/2011 #

aykra 01/ 6/2011 #

My name is Charlotte Brandon and I am from the Regency period :)

SilenceDogWood 01/ 8/2011 #

I am 20 year old Cherokee Indian living in 1400 before the Cherokee Nation knew much about the white man. My husband is one of the great warriors of our nation.

fairyoflostthings 01/13/2011 #

My name is Odessa Prudence Calderhead. My family is soon due to leave on the Titanic for America. It is very exciting. Father has been offered a position in Baltimore. I am 30 years old, widowed, and I am hoping to meet someone on the ship.

deborah 01/13/2011 #

Hello! My name is Alexander, but call me Allie, everyone does. Well, almost everyone. I'll be 17 next year, if next year even happens--it's 2999 and everyone is going on and on about the world ending. Yeah, right. I mean this is England, (in the north, what used to be called Scotland if you believe Asher) are we not supposed to be a bit more... mature? And God is having too much fun with us to end the world now, if y'ask me, not that anyone does, but don't repeat that or I'll be in trouble. Everyone got a bit religious-crazy after The Havoc and... but that's probably more than you wanted to know.

(great idea for a swap! Let me know if I've gone too far into the future, please, and I'll come up with something past-ier.)

Halogen 01/14/2011 #

@deborah no, that's great - the whole idea is to mix it up so I'm glad to see someone else from the future!

heather1971 01/14/2011 #

My names Minnie and golly, do I ever think Rudy Valentino is the bees knees! I grew up in in a small town south of Chicago, but once I was old enough, my old man gave me the bums rush and I found myself working for next ta nuthin' in a speakeasy in a shabby part of town. It ain't great, but as long as I keep my trap shut, and smile all pretty like, I ain't got no problems. There's a private dick that comes around, I kinda think he's got a thing for me. He ain't no Rudy Valentino, but hey, I ain't no Gloria Swanson neither, not with my shnozzola!

AndreaJ 01/19/2011 #

My name is Pete Winton. I'm one of the "Young, skinny, wiry fellows, expert riders. Willing to risk death daily." who rides 75 miles a day for the Pony Express in 1860 in the US.

--this should be exciting although I'm kind of nervous about it! There are some interesting scenarios here.

Sillyna511 01/20/2011 #

Just happened to stumble upon this one... I'm not very creative and don't enjoy writing much, so this is not a swap for me. But it's fun just to read the comments - I can imagine how much fun this swap will be for those who enjoy writing stories! Great idea to the creator of this one! :)

Halogen 01/23/2011 #

Thanks :) I've just finished mine and it was a lot of fun. I hope to keep going with these.

Halogen 01/23/2011 #

If anyone is interested I have a similar swap running in the geek central group here:

http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/82036

It's slightly different so if you like the look of this one come over and try another creative letter game!

aykra 01/31/2011 #
