Swap categories: Themed  Artist Trading Card (ATC)  Newbie
Number of people in swap:70
Location:International
Type:Type 3: Package or craft
Last day to signup/drop:January 24, 2011
Date items must be sent by:February 7, 2011
Number of swap partners:2
Description:

For this swap, you will create 2 cards that use a foreign language in some form: you can use a page from a book as a background, cut out words to use on your card, or use your own handwriting. Try to use at least 3 words to make it interesting. You can use any technique you like to create your cards, just make sure it is your best work.

Use any language other than English! Everyone on this site knows English, so that wouldn't be any fun. Check your partner's profile so you can see where they are and use a language that would be foreign to them. Go on Google and type in "English to ...translation" to find words translated into other languages.

You will send 1 card to each of 2 partners. Send your cards in a plastic sleeve, and put at least your name and swap name on the back of your card.

I will accept newbies with filled-out profiles, but if you have any recent 1's or 3's, please explain them before joining the swap. I will be checking.......

This is going to be so much fun. We have 11 official languages, and a few unofficial. While english is my first language, I speak afrikaans too which is very very similar to dutch ( the whole colonising thing*).

Xandoz 01/ 4/2011 #

Another South Africa, Nasreen? Hellooooo!

Do "unofficial" languages count? I can speak a bit of Sindarin, which is the Elvish Language from Lord of the Rings.

GirlFriday 01/ 4/2011 #

That is awesome Xandoz. I hope I get you as a partner because I would love it.

Halogen 01/ 4/2011 #

@Xandoz ahaha, I was just going to ask the same thing! I love writing in elvish :)

Xandoz 01/ 4/2011 #

Well, it is technically a language. it has all its own grammer rules and vocab and whatnot. It's just not actually spoken in any ral place in the world.

TurtleLove 01/ 4/2011 #

Just thinking that with that many comments on Sindarin/Lord of the Rings...a swap with that theme might be popular?! lol

pirategrrl775 01/ 4/2011 #

Well, I would like to keep the swap confined to languages that are---um---"official".....and not from a book or movie, so I think Klingon would be out for this one, too....just in case someone asks ;)

...and I agree that elvish would be a great swap--for someone else! You should do it, @Xandoz !

jringling 01/ 7/2011 #

Is it limited to spoken language, or does a written language work? I am thinking Elder Futhark Runes, but they might not count...

pirategrrl775 01/ 9/2011 #

let's make it a language that is written and spoken.....a language you would find a book written in.....swedish--portuguese--swahili--afrikaans--hebrew--turkish--korean--spanish--dutch--russian..........

Ladykisa 01/21/2011 #

Make it 12 official languages then, I'm icelandic :) A whole 318.000 of us speaking this language :D

w3nch 01/21/2011 #

Haha, here comes some Latin!

pirategrrl775 01/21/2011 #

@Ladykisa Icelandic would be great! I would love to go there one day, just to see what it's like.

and @w3nch I'm not sure about Latin, but since it's spoken and written, I guess it can count. They still teach it, so I am willing to count it in....

by the way, I'm so glad we have 42 in our swap---this is only about the 3rd swap I've hosted on swap-bot, and I was super excited to see it in the top swaps!! Let's see if we can get any more by the deadline!

NaughtyElf 01/22/2011 #

Can we use more than 1 language on our card? Say for like a background a collage of foreign languages? I have several old books in foreign languages and would love to try this.

NaughtyElf 01/22/2011 #

I have a Tolkien group on here would anyone object to me hosting a Sindarin swap for it? Anyone is welcome to join the group, swaps do have their own criteria. Here is the link to the group, swap soon to follow!

NaughtyElf 01/22/2011 #

OK, so here is the link to Sindarin/Elvish ATC for the group, I hope those interested will join in! Thanks guys!

pirategrrl775 01/23/2011 #

@NaughtyElf I didn't put any restriction on how many languages you can use, so more than one can work...as for your Sindarin swap, good for you!! I know some people posted here and were interested in doing it, so I'm glad they have a coordinator for it!

NaughtyElf 01/23/2011 #

OKk, thanks for answering my question! This is going to be so fun! And I hope they like it too! :-)

bren 01/23/2011 #

Does sign language and braille count as foreign even though they are usually english?

pirategrrl775 01/23/2011 #

@bren -If you can find it in another language other than English, you can use it....

Elin 01/24/2011 #

Braille was a french dude, btw.

pirategrrl775 01/24/2011 #

Oh, @Elin I know that ;), but Braille can come in any language, so I wanted her to find Braille in a language other than English....

pirategrrl775 01/24/2011 #

and tomorrow, I will click and give everyone their partners---I'm excited!

princessblueberry 01/24/2011 #

My favorite background to work with is a spanish dictionary from 1875...and I have ATCs ready :-D

JohnnyDingo 01/24/2011 #

Is Igpay Atinlay (Pig Latin) acceptable?

I'm JUST KIDDING! I can't believe some of the comments on this swap. LOL. What is SO hard to understand about "A FOREIGN Language?"

@pirategrrl775 - thanks for hosting, this really does look like fun!

Sorry...computer hickuped (:

Ladykisa 01/26/2011 #

Concerning latin, it IS the official language of the Vatican (totally independent state although it is situated in Rome) :)

pirategrrl775 01/28/2011 #

@Ladykisa --is it? I never knew that, but I think I told someone Latin was OK to use....

SomeoneGingerly 02/ 3/2011 #

I'll be using Latin as well, I have a collection of Latin proverbs I really like and they give way to lots of inspiration for this swap!

JohnnyDingo 02/ 6/2011 #

Well, mine are DONE, but today is Sunday. They WILL be mailed out tomorrow!
