Description:

CLICK JOIN SWAP TO PARTICIPATE. If you click "watch swap" you will NOT be participating.

Each person will have 4 partners and will send 4 blocks to each one for a total of 16 blocks swapped.

This is a scrappy swap intended for a scrappy style quilt. Choose scrap fabrics from your scrap stash to use for this and trim them down to a 5" charm square block.

For the background fabric (the lighter one) please choose a white fabric to use so everyone will have the same light fabric for swapped blocks.

Please make sure you are using a scant 1/4 seam when sewing them together or they will not come out close to the correct size. Finished blocks should be around 5.75", precuts vary so if it doesn't come out perfect just do your best. Watch the video tutorial before sewing any blocks together as this is a new method we are using to make a pinwheel block out of two 5" charm squares put together.

Not sure how to do a proper 1/4 seam?

You can read my blog post with tips on how to achieve an accurate one (there is an accompanying podcast as well):

How to Achieve an Accurate 1/4" Seam: http://www.katiesquiltingcorner.com/2011/04/podcast-episode-12-scanty-quarter-inch.html

We will be using the tutorial Missouri Star Quilt Co. showed on how to make pinwheels from 5" charm squares.

Missouri Star Quilt Co. Charm Block Pinwheel Tutorial Video: http://youtu.be/ekYpJzHoW6E

Fabric should be of good quality and 100% cotton. Blocks do not have to be identical, especially since these blocks are generally quite scrappy. COLORS AND PATTERNS ARE SWAPPERS (your own) CHOICE. You can choose to send your partners whatever you wish, just make sure the background fabric is white or a white tone on tone. If you want to ask your partner for color preferences that is up to you but you don't have to do it.

If you have allergies please state this so your partner knows. If I need to pair you with a new partner I will do so. If possible, use fabrics you already have in your stash. This is a scrap busting swap!

Is white with a white pattern ok for the white? Loved the tutorial, and I look forward to watching more of them. It honestly never occurred to me to look on YouTube for quilting ideas!

I think as long as the colored fabric is mostly a color and not mostly white it should look like a pinwheel. You want it to contrast with the white. Hoping everyone likes this swap, I think it will be a fun one.

Oh I meant, can the white be a tone-on-tone instead of just plain white?

QuiltedMagnolia 05/ 9/2011 #

Yes I think that will be fine. Just want to make sure the swapped colors match since everyone has so many different partners and the light fabric matching will make the blocks blend easier.

what is the finished size of the quilt block supposed to be?

Just a reminder: in this swap you choose the colors from your stash for all your partners. The partners do not choose. If you wish to work something else out that is up to you but in general, use scrap fabrics for scrappy pinwheel blocks.

For the finished size of the block I believe it should come out to 5.75". I measured several of mine that are done from precut charm packs and that seems to be what a majority of them came out to.

If you are cutting your own squares to 5" it will likely be more accurate as precuts aren't always uniform as we know.

I'm sorry but I am dropping from this swap. Something major has come up, also I will be having a house quest for a while.

I am loving using up all my scraps for these blocks!
