Hmmm not sure what you meant about watering the base of the plant.... ? Does the container have good drainage? It should not hold stagnant water, there should be holes in the bottom to let the water drain out. Make sure that water can drain out the bottom! depending on the plant it may not like to be constantly moist, some do better when they dry out between waterings. Might want to let it dry out? (If it is really too dry and needs water it will start to wilt but will perk right up within minutes after watering it.)
