About Me

I am a retired elementary school art teacher, enjoying the closest thing I'll ever get to being independently wealthy. My husband and I share the house with our menagerie - three dogs, two cats and a goldfish named Pig. Outside, our four chickens share their own A-frame house that I built last year. After many failed attempts to reproduce my Ohio garden in Las Vegas, I've given up and now focus on herbs and wildflowers.

Favorite Music

I love so many different kinds of music that it's difficult to pick a favorite. The Beatles, of course, along with a lot of music from the late 60s - early 70s. World music, ancient music, Mickey Hart, Afro-Celt Sound System, Blackmore's Night, Middle Eastern, Celtic, music you find on Hearts of Space, some jazz, some bluegrass, singer/songwriters, etc., etc...

Favorite Books

I read a lot of non-fiction, but have gotten back into fiction lately. Favorite authors include Michael Pollan, Bill Bryson, Margaret Atwood, J. K. Rowling, Neil Gaiman, Frances Mayes, Barbara Kingsolver. Favorite books? Hmmm...The Harry Potter series; American Gods; The Olive Farm; Under the Tuscan Sun; Animal, Vegetable, Miracle; and anything by Edward Gorey.

Favorite Movies

1940s black and white movies - Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis...

Paterson * Our Little Sister * Let the Right One In * Only Lovers Left Alive * Planes, Trains, & Automobiles * Raiders of the Lost Ark * Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade * ET * The Green Mile * The Shawshank Redemption * Brigadoon * The Ghost and Mrs. Muir * Midnight in Paris * Mighty Aphrodite * Fiddler on the Roof * My Fair Lady * The original Star Wars trilogy * Lonesome Dove * Harry Potter* Bottle Shock * the list goes on and on...

Favorite Television

We don't have TV, but thanks to the wonders of Netflix and streaming...

Vikings * The X Files * Stranger Things * Frasier * MASH * Downton Abbey * Sherlock * Lost

Favorite Crafts

Fiber arts: spinning, knitting, sewing, some quilting, mixed media art, art journaling, mail art, gardening (I know, not really a craft, but something I like to do on a regular basis), cooking, baking, fermenting

Additional stuff

I also enjoy drumming (frame and doumbek), yoga, druidry, women's spirituality, mythology, writing letters and learning whatever new thing happens to strike my fancy.

You might have guessed that I like to keep busy. Now that I'm retired, I wonder how I had time to raise a child and have a career...

I like "naked" postcards, interesting stamps, handmade stationery, envelopes, postcards, etc. I think all the postal marks, smudges, crinkles, etc. incurred through the mailing process add character!

Autumn is my favorite season; Halloween is the best holiday of the year! I favor the vintage, spooky, mystical, spiritual Halloween. NO GORE or SLASHER STUFF!

I have an affinity for ravens.

Not My Favorite

  • Apart from animal photos, I don't like "cute".

  • Racism/Intolerance in any form

  • Ignorance

  • People who take themselves too seriously or lack a sense of humor

  • Mushrooms

  • When my mail goes by camel caravan

"Ha-ha! We have your mail!"

I recently read an article in "Atlus Obscura" - "The most beautiful part of a Taiko drum is hidden inside it. Here is a glimpse. :)

India is mindboggling in its swarming multitude, which makes it filthy & ugly, as well as beautiful & cultivated. Here are some drums from India, which I had the good fortune to experience myself :)

In Pung Cholom, a form of the Manipuri dance, the dancers play upon pung, the drum, and dance while playing the intricate time cycles, executing somersaults and breathtaking acrobatic feats.

During Durga Pooja, during the "Aaratee", which is a ritual of offering lamp-light, incesne-fragrance etc. to the deity in Hindu Poojaas, the "Dhaaki" plays the "Dhaak"

In the northern states, the women have their own groups of Dholki & singing, for all religious funtions (which are MANY), & family functions such as marriages & childbirths. Unfortumnately, the traditional songs are getting lost, & Hindi movie songs are creeping in.

Wildchild on Oct 28, 2016:

Who would have thought drums could have such a profound impact on a person. I have never entered the Zone myself but a friend of mine says it is incredibly cathartic.

I had one of these a while ago but it got lost in the moving around I've done in the last few years. I would love to get another one!

The most basic of drum beats and probably the inspiration for the first drum.

I have always wanted to join a drum circle but I just never get to the local one.

Just because...
