Hi taggers and traders!

I have received many complaints recently about forum tags and one-on-one trades. There seem to be quite a few people not following through on their forum commitments.

I urge everyone to take a few things into consideration when participating in the forum swaps:

  • Tags are something of an act of faith. There is no guarantee that other users will follow through.

  • There is no recourse (i.e. a rating system) for punishing those who do not follow through on their forum swap commitments.

  • I do not take forum swaps into consideration when deciding whether an account needs to be suspended.

  • I suggest only participating in tags that are simple and inexpensive. Be smart about what you can afford and what will make you happy to send.

  • If you are doing a one-on-one trade, I recommend setting up a private swap between the two participants. That way there is an official record of the swap and you can both receive ratings.

I realize that it is extremely frustrating when people don't follow through on their forum swap commitments. That does NOT give you the right to send them threatening or harassing emails or PMs. "Swap-lifting" is a serious offense akin to stealing, but threatening, insulting, and harassing other members (no matter the justification) is also VERY serious. I promise that thoughtful, yet firm, communication will get better results than angry threats and insults.

Also, keep in mind that I cannot force anyone to send items. I also cannot force anyone to be nice. I can try, but I am not always successful. :) Really, this is your community. I am just here to offer suggestions and help when I can.

And... remember to have lots of FUN! That is the point after all.

UPDATE: I forgot to say the most important thing: If you sign up for a forum tag or trade you are making a commitment. Make sure you follow through and SEND YOUR ITEMS! Be cool, not lame. Thanks!

great post, Rachel.

TheLisaBeast 10/26/2007

Hm.

twisted 10/26/2007

Ty Rachel...I have a feeling the tag games will definately die out soon. Too many LameOh's on swapbot :)

OrigamiGrace 10/27/2007

Rachel, thx for the clarification! I'm no longer participating in the forum games for this reason. Many swappers have stopped. Instead, I'm going to host a regular Stellar Swapper swap (25+ hearts).

szreader 10/27/2007

Well put, Rachel. "Be cool, not lame" is excellent advice for swapping . . . and life in general. Thanks!

TheLisaBeast 10/27/2007

Mulling over the post done: Merely a good reminder why NEVER to play the games anymore.

Thanks, dollbutt! Sincerely. Well writ' and very informative, especially for those newbie-swapsters unaware of the dangers inherent in the tag-games.

spinjenny 10/27/2007

Yes, the tag/PIB games are great fun, and I've been looking forward to getting back into them eventually, but I think it is best to stick to small/cheap/light items which are still fun to get but not a major disappointment if they don't work out.

iheartswap 10/27/2007

"Be cool, not lame." I love this Rachel. Thanks for that. It totally made my day ;)

pahasiga 10/28/2007

Oh, I hope that these tag games will NOT die out soon.. I haven't really had chance to participate yet! I like the possibility to swap something I want for something I can give rather than to swap something I have for same-but-a-little-different thing.

alicepalace 10/28/2007

I'm not playing any more either. I don't think I've actually ever been flaked in one of these - & I've received some gorgeous stuff! - but I don't feel comfortable with them any more. I don't think there's a clear and consistent expectation about how large or small or slowly or quickly, or whatever, the trades should be. It makes it tricky.

Thanks for the clarification, Rachel, it's good to know what's what with this. :)

TerryF 10/28/2007

I love the tag games. I have played probably 100 times and only been flaked on in a couple of them - that's a better average than on the regular swaps for me. Plus there are lots of angels who will step in for the tag games. Maybe I am just lucky that I get really great swappers there.

MamaBowers 10/28/2007

I am SO sad that they are dying! I too agree with pahasiga that it is great to offer something I can make and in turn receive something I may not have had access to. I hope they don't die completely :(

rainydaygirl 10/28/2007

I feel like I don't feel very comfortable playing them anymore, either. I am wondering if we could do kind of a "clean slate" kind of thing and restart some of our favorite games with more specific rules?...time frame expected, $$ amount, etc.

Some of these games have gone on so long that the original rules have gotten a little muddled.

Any ideas?

spinjenny 10/29/2007

One-to-one trades can also allow you to trade things you can make for things other people can make, or things you can buy locally for things you cannot, and they can be set up as formal swaps and so get the protection of the rating system. Of course they are more limiting as the person who wants what you have to offer may not be able to offer what you want, but they may be a good compromise till R&T can offer a rating system for tag/PIB games.

Rachel, I absolutely LOVE your "Be cool, not lame" statement. I think it needs to be the forum motto.

Thanks for the great site!

lisajhoney 11/10/2007

I think thats a great idea rainydaygirl, some of the rules aren't that clear, so starting again sounds really good. I've found participating on the forum games i've made some friends as you tend to communicate more and swap with them more.

DeeDee 12/13/2007

♥ I love TAG ♥ I like the idea of having more specific rules. Time frame, expected amount, when to refresh your listing, etc. Can anyone start a new TAG?

merlinda 02/19/2008

founf this and thank you for the warning, I am new and have done a few tags, it is easy to get in a muddle, although I have sent all mine in case anyone wondered. BIG thank you for the advice, think will probably stick with swaps than tags. I found I couldn't do anymore even thou the send date was far away which for the mo ment tags the only way i think. excuse my lack of knowledge but learning fast. Have a great day everyone.

Nanamint 02/19/2008

I actually found more fun and satisfaction in forum tags than on most public swaps. It's a quick way to get to know people and it's much easier for people like me who have a very busy schedule. And I've not experienced any tag flaking yet.

sweetsugartree 02/19/2008

I enjoy going to the forums and swapping if I see something of interest. It's fast and easy! So far no flakeage...but can't say that for the regular swaps...what's a bummer is that I got flaked on in the stellar swappers swap :( oh well, i sent mine and got a good rating and a heart out of it. I do like the idea of starting fresh though and revising the tags with specific rules.

Chanel 02/19/2008

I have had much better luck percentage wise on the tag than on formal swaps as far as flakers are concerned. But I too would like to see some of the forum tags revamped with updated more specific rules
