Description:

Anyone game for a quick little Chanukah swap? This year, Chanukah begins at sundown Dec. 15th and ends on sundown Dec. 23rd.

You don't have to be Jewish to participate, but you need to be familiar with the tradition of Chanukah (easy enough to Google) so that you DON'T send anything Christmas-related or offensive.

It's going to be VERY simple. Read your swap partner's profile, and from that profile find 8 small gifts to wrap individually, then put them all in one box and ship them off. The gifts can be purchased or handmade, large or small, expensive or not expensive. You decide. But make it nice. Send things you would like to receive. MOST OF ALL, MAKE IT FUN!!

If your profile does not give enough information, don't expect to get much.

The gifts do NOT need to be Chanukah-themed or Jewish-themed, but they MUST NOT be Christmas items, and they MUST NOT be religious items unless they are Jewish. (And no, "Jews for Jesus" items are not acceptable!)

ALL PACKAGES MUST BE MAILED OUT BY DEC. 9th SO THAT EVERYONE HAS SOMETHING TO OPEN from the very first night of Chanukah and on each night thereafter.

ABSOLUTELY NO ATTEMPTS AT PROSELYTYZING WILL BE TOLERATED!!! If anyone in this swap receives anything religious that isn't specifically Chanukah-related or Jewish, please report it to me so that I can deal with it appropriately.

DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT SIGNING UP IF YOU'VE HAD ANY NO SENDS OR POOR RATINGS!!!! (If you have extenuating circumstances, please contact me privately. I just want everyone who sends to also receive.)

Contact me if you have any questions.

a rating of 5 or 4? I would absolutly love to join this swap. It sounds like loads of fun.

user2195 11/17/2006 #

Same for me! Please let me know

Wow! Who knew one little swap posting could generate so many comments?? Okay, I have edited the swap--thanks for pointing out my boo-boo, Peacock. And Akki and Jen, please email me privately if you'd like to join the swap. I'm just trying to discourage the true slackers, since I've only received in 50% of the swaps so far, and I know a lot of others in this situation, too.

Changeling, I do not fear other religious traditions at all. I live in a VERY inclusive, interfaith family. We have Christians, Buddhists, Agnostics, Pagans, and Jews. But for this Chanukah swap, I wanted it to be very specifically for Chanukah. And since one doesn't have to be Jewish to join this swap, I just wanted to outline what, for me and MY swap, this would mean--nothing related to Christmas, and nothing of a proselytyzing nature. Yes, there are a lot of people out there who don't get that. I cannot tell you the looks I get when I tell people I do not celebrate Christmas. And I still get, "Merry Christmas" rather than something more inclusive like "Happy Holidays."

Anyone else can post a swap however they would like; this is just what I wanted to do. Honestly, I thought I would be lucky to get one or two signups, so I am amazed at the interest.

This time can be challenging for those of us who do not celebrate Christmas, and that's not just Jews. All sorts of faith traditions do not celebrate Chrsitmas. Yet everyone I go, even before Halloween this year, there is Christmas stuff. It is everywhere. I don't hate it. I just didn't want someone to sign up and then send someone else in the swap a Christmas mug. I want people to think about what they are sending out.

I hope this makes sense.

And thanks to all who have signed up so far!!!!

If anyone has any questions, please do not be afraid to email me privately. I am really a nice person, just tired of the slackers on Swap Bot and trying to make this a swap where ALL of us get as well as give. So email me with any questions or comments. If you want to know whether or not something would be okay to send, just ask! I promise I don't bite. My bark sounded ferocious here, and for that I apologize. As I wrote, I just want to make this swap something really special. It's a Chanukah Box of HAPPINESS, so let's keep this fun and HAPPY!!!!!

I think that your logic is perfect, actually. As a non-Christian myself (Pagan/UU) I completely understand your frustration with the Christmas-overload! I'm looking forward to participating in this swap- thanks for setting it up.

purplewhimsy 11/21/2006 #

I'm not frustrated by it. I've learned to live with it harmoniously by seeing it for the sheer commercialism push to make money that it is. I would just like to send and receive 8 little gifts to open during the Festival of Lights! The last night of Chanukah this year is also my 50th birthday, so I thought it might be nice to do something special this year, and this swap just seemed to fit the bill.

Gift Ideas: Yarn(not cotton or acrylic), Books on Knitting, Material for Sewing, Candles, anti bacterial gels

Please try and avoid sending me body creams or shower gels.

Thanks

I don't have a particular religious affiliation, but like to celebrate all kinds of holidays around this time of year.

Gift ideas: little toys, yarn (any kind, since I use the acrylic for Mother Bear bears), oh just surprise me. :)

user2195 11/27/2006 #

Mine is sent:) Hope you enjoy.

Paula 12/10/2006 #

Sabrina, I wanted to let you know that your gifts arrived safely. I was good and only opened the card. :)

user2289 12/12/2006 #

Received mine today, Im sorry but I had to cheat. It looked too good. Well, I only opened one. [the scarf] I love it. thanks so much!

igobylorib 12/13/2006 #

my package is on the way to Catgirl. I can't wait for her to receive it because I had way to much fun putting this package together :)

igobylorib 12/18/2006 #

I received my package and I have to admit I was disappointed. It frustrates me when people don't care at all about what they send or take the time to read the rules. Chanukkah presents should not be sent in Christmas wrapping paper. Nor should you send someone in South Carolina a scraf and gloves. I looked at my partners profile and worked really hard on my package knowing it was for Chanukkah. I am bummed that I didn't get the same consideration.

purplewhimsy 12/18/2006 #

igobylorib,

I am SO sorry you weren't treated right in this swap. I thought I made it ABUNDANTLY clear not to send anything Christmas related. I can understand a boo-boo about a scarf and gloves, though, as parts of SC, in the mountains, do get more of a winter than other places in SC, don't they? My brother lives in Greer, and he says the mountain areas further inland do. So that could have been an honest mistake. HOWEVER, Christmas wrapping paper was BAD. Spiral3913, I am very disappointed that you did not pay attention to the swap guidelines.

Here it is, the 4th night of Chanukah, and I have received NOTHING myself. Half way through, and nothing. Next swap I host will be a private one with hand-picked participants. This is just ridiculous.

i haven't recieved my package yet. i think that it would be good if it was to go out a few weeks earlier to ensure that it gets there on time. i hope that mine has been recieved as i sent it priority post so that it would get there on time.

nonetheless, i look forward to recieving your package igobylorib!

best, lisa

igobylorib 12/19/2006 #

Lisa, I apologize for it being delayed. When I brought it to the post office, I intended on it going priority mail and didn't pay attention to the fact that you are in Canada. I was so hopping it would have arrived by now. I am so sorry that I missed part of Chanukah. I was so concerned with sending a good package, I let it go out to late :(

GirlCanCreate 12/19/2006 #

igobylorib, no worries, i will simply be happy when it gets here!

best, lisa

purplewhimsy 12/20/2006 #

I spoke too soon. No, nothing has arrived yet, but I didn't notice that my pkg from Jen is also coming from Canada, and this time of year, Customs really slows things up. So, for those of us receiving from Canada or sending to Canada, it's just going to be very slow to get through the mail and customs people. So I am sorry I said it was ridiculous. Yes, it would've been nice for it to arrive by Chanukah, but, it didn't. Not the end of the world, and it might be more fun opening them all at once anyway. Always look on the bright side....it's often so hard to remember to do that. My apologies to Jen for not taking the whole Customs thing into account. That's not something you can control. So, let's just enjoy our packages when we get them, for those of us getting them late.

GirlCanCreate 12/20/2006 #

Lori! I recieved my package and want to thank you soooo much vor the wonderful gifts you have given to me! This is one of the best swaps ever! It was well worth the wait!
