Description:

Have you noticed that aprons are making a comeback? Not the butcher/chef/BBQ style that you can find anywhere, but the more vintage-style hostess/housewife aprons. I LOVE these, and they are SO easy to sew! I'm brand new to sewing but even I can do it.

So, let's make one "half" apron for our swap partner. Make sure you get your assigned partner's waist measurements and add plenty of inches to make certain the strings will tie!

We're not doing full aprons with a "bib" because some people are short-waisted or long-waisted or ample-chested which all change the measurements of the bib. So let's just make a simple, spring-ish half apron. Please include at least one pocket on it.

No pattern? Here's a few freebies on the web:

how to recycle an old skirt (or cheap thrift store buy): http://www.shasta.com/suesgoodco/newcivilians/womenswear/aprons.htm

retro kitchen apron instructions (ignore the bib part of the instructions): http://www.craftygal.com/archives/402/table402.htm

http://organizedhome.com/content-7.html

This one is specifically designed for cleaning, so has lots of pockets. But even if you don't make all the pockets, it has some great directions you can adapt to make a basic half apron: http://organizedhome.com/content-7.html

Go here:
http://www.robertkaufman.com/quilting/quiltspatterns/ Scroll down about halfway, and click on "download pattern" for HAPPY HOMEMAKER (or get the patter PDF directly from here: http://www.robertkaufman.com/assets/pdf/RKQ.HappyHomemaker.pdf

Finally, this one is for children, so it would need to be made larger for an adult, but the directions are very clear and wonderful: http://www.patternbee.com/FREE5.html

By the way, if you are willing to make a full apron based on your assigned partner's measurements, AND your assigned partner wants a full one, it's okay to do so. Be sure to talk between yourselves about it. However, no one is required a make a full bib apron if they don't want to.

Also, it's always nice to add a few tuck-ins to your package. For this swap, a wooden spoon or other kitchen utensil, potholder, a few recipes or tea bags, any of these would be a lovely little tuck-in surprise for your assigned person. This isn't required. All that is required is a simple half apron with one pocket.

You can contact your assigned person and get favorite colors and try to make one to match, but again, this isn't required. Do try to use fabric that's as vintage-y as possible. There are great reproduction vintage fabrics available. But, you can also use what you have in your fabric stash.

Since an apron is very inexpensive to mail, this swap WILL be OPEN TO ALL, EVEN INTERNATIONAL, AS LONG AS you have a rating of 4.7 or higher. Newbies need to have a rating before signing up, and that rating needs to be 4.7 or greater.

So, let's have fun and swing into spring with an apron!!! Any questions? Just contact me!

I found one more set on excellent online instructions. You have to be a member of (or sign up for a free membership) craftster.org, but it's a great place with plenty of ideas and swaps and all sorts of coolness. Anyway, the "Suzy Homemaker Apron" pattern can be found here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=2309.0 This is a full/bib apron, but you can easily ignore the top straps and bib and just follow the instructions for the remaining half apron.

Happy aprons!!

OH PRETTY PLEASE! I see you need ratings for this swap, but I would just love to do this. I do a lot of sewing. I'd like to have the name of the person ASAP as I am due in March with our 12th baby, so I'd like to get this sent out before this would hold me up. Please let me know ASAP, and I did fill out all the info on the profile, so you can read more about me too - esp. on my blog. I just wrote about this Swap Bot http://joyinthemorning.clubmom.com/

I would sooo love to participate in this but have never heard of swap-bot until today. I heard about this site via Loni's blog. I signed up with a profile and I also have a blog.(www.sundazydays.blogspot.com ) I love to sew and my machine is out on the table right now...just waiting for a fun new project!...I saw Loni's comment about wanting to do this swap and had to smile because I knew as soon as I saw it that I would love this one..... Maybe you could allow the 2 of us to be paired? I trust her.:-) Thanks for considering this request.

purplewhimsy 02/ 5/2007 #

Hi Loni and Suny Swap-Bot matches people up via the computer. As a swap host, I have absolutely no control who is matched up with whom, nor can I amtch folks up earlier than the preset date of February 28th. I will visit each of your blogs and leave a comment.

I also don't have a rating yet, though I have finished a swap. If you look back at the Pink Swap, you will see that I completed it and my partner was happy with everything. When we originally went to look at our swap partners, the pop-up box kept coming up blank, so our swap host assigned partners via email. Now we can't rate eachother because we didn't use the partners assigned by swap-bot, but by our host. If you look at the pink swap you can see our ratings posted in the comments.

Clear as mud? LOL! I make aprons all the time to sell in a local craft/art gallery, and would love to take part in this swap. It would be nice to get an apron to keep for myself for once! My profile is all filled out, if that helps. Thank you!

Here is a link to another easy apron: http://sewing.about.com/library/weekly/aa041299.htm

purplewhimsy 02/10/2007 #

Zenshey, thanks! Looks easy with clear instructions! I am hoping folks make aprons that are just a bit less boxy looking and a little more rounded and vintagey looking, but that's all up to the sender and receiver.

Jewels, I'm sending you a private message. Check for it.

zenzhey 02/12/2007 #

oh ok sorry! :-)

purplewhimsy 02/13/2007 #

Zenzhey, no need to be sorry. It's always good to have resources and options!!

I am new to sqap bot but have been swapping fabric cards on artcards, can I be accepted on this project cheers Bev

Today I received a package with fabric squares in it from someone called Toni Duke. I have one problem with this, I have no idea who she is! I find this rather funny, but obviously I don't just want to ignore this person. I don't believe this is to do with this group, but if anyone has heard of her, could you get her to contact me. Thanks everyone. Marie xxx

purplewhimsy 02/28/2007 #

little stitcher: to contact a swap bot person, go to the swap page that the fabric squares are a part of. Look for the phrase "view complete list of participants" and click on it. You should find Toni Duke listed. Then just click on her user name. From there you can either email her if she has it listed or contact her using the new Swap-Bot message system.

NEW SWAP BOT PEOPLE: You can't sign up for a swap just by leaving a comment in this section. You have to click on "sign me up for this swap." The swap coordinator cannot sign you up for swaps. You have to do that yourself.

ALSO, new people need to contact me privately through the Swap-Bot message system in order to get permission to participate in this swap. If you did not do that, you will not be able to participate. HOWEVER, I will be posting another apron swap in May/June, so if you miss out on this one, watch for the next one. By then you should have a good rating and wsill be able to participate with no problem.

IF ANY NEW PERSON HAS ANY QUESTIONS, MESSAGE ME VIA SWAP-BOT. I AM HAPPY TO HELP NEW PEOPLE. BUT YOU NEED TO CONTACT ME DIRECTLY AND NOT JUST LEAVE A COMMENT HERE. THIS COMMENT SECTION IS FOR COMMENTS DIRECTLY REALTED TO THE SPRING APRON SWAP.

niecedenise 03/ 1/2007 #

I didnt see this swap until just this minute. Let me know if and when you will be doing this again! niecedenise email [email protected] thanks

Bearynice 03/ 2/2007 #

when do we get our partners? bev

purplewhimsy 03/ 2/2007 #

niecedenise--you will have to watch for the swaps as they are posted on Swap-Bot. Yes, I will be posting another one.

To Bev and other newbies who did not contact me directly: You have been banned from the swap because it is important that you read and follow the entire swap description instructions. I stated no newbies without ratings. A few contacted me directly, and I was able to make an assessment about their eligibility to participate in this swap. Those who did not contact me were banned.

I will be doing more apron swaps in the future. Watch for them. But be sure to read the entire swap description and follow the instructions.

PARTNERS HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED! HAPPY SWAPPING FOLKS!!!

Hi, To whoever got me (and for the rest of the known world), my waist is 30". Make the ties generous so I can sample as I cook!! Thanks!

user2955 03/10/2007 #

I don't really understand the whole measurement thing. The aprons I have seen are all one size fits all with long waist ties that are easily retied. You can make a bow in the back that is at least two feet of extra length on each tie. I am sorry if this sounds like I am biased but is there really anyone out there with an 80 inch waist ? Why does anyone need measurements?

user4335 03/10/2007 #

Aly, I think the waist measurement is more to make the apron front fit in proportion to the wearer. You don't want the actual apron to wrap far around the sides, but it is nice for it to go all the way across.

user6602 03/14/2007 #

I mailed my apron yesterday and put a photo in the gallery - so don't look geekxnerd if you want a suprise! And it has a couple of little suprises too - happy cooking :-)
