Description:

Here's a chance for all you wonderful people to flex your crafty muscles!! We've all seen those cute corn husk dolls during Thanksgiving and Christmas. They're cheap and easy to make! The catch to this swap though, is to make a corn husk doll with a little "oomph" to it-- something creative and cool beyond the standard, plain, "naked" corn husk doll. The picture shows some cool ones with clothes-- these are made by professionals, so don't worry if yours don't look like these. They're just examples.

Some ideas are:

  • Dolls embellished with husk costumes

  • Dolls resembling your favorite TV or cartoon character

  • Aliens

  • Animals

The possibilities are endless! Just run with it!

You will be assigned one partner to swap with, so you will only need to make one doll, and you get four weeks to make it, so make it SPECIAL! The theme is sender's choice, but you may want to check your partner's profile for ideas!

There are a lot of basic instructions on the Internet on how to make these. Here's a good link: http://www.michigan.gov/mikids/0,1607,7-163-15941_20571---,00.html

Newbies are always welcome, and you should have a rating of 4.5 or higher. I'll be giving the profiles a quick check. I'll also angel if necessary. Message me if you have any questions. Looking forward to seeing you creation pics on flickr!!

This is an intriguing idea, so I am watching for now. I wanted to let everyone know that I just read that you can dye the corn husks w/fabric dye, food coloring, or tea! I wonder if fabric markers work, too? Opens up the possibilities a bit, tho!

And you can also change the proportions of where you tie the doll to make the head bigger and the body smaller, or whatever, to make exaggerated features...

Corn husks are not easy to find where I live. Can I use banana leaves or palm fronds instead?

Yes, that''s a great suggestion! A lot of markets carry corn husks in the "Mexican Food" section, but if you can't find any, then yes, I think banana leaves or palm fronds would be suitable. Make sure they dry though before you send them off...
