I'm a wife to my best friend and mother to human and canine babies. We live in Wisconsin and yes, I adore the cold weather.
I was in kindergarden in 1970 and my class sent off postcards attached to balloons. Mine was returned months later from a couple in New York who said they found it in the woods while walking their dog. I thought that was the most magical thing I'd ever heard of. I pictured my little balloon blowing all the way from Wisconsin to New York. Landing in a woods somewhere and surviving a hard winter. Then, being discovered by a nice couple who took the time to return the postcard to me.
I was an avid letter writer and card sender all through my school years - grade school through college. Another one of my favorite letters was one my dad wrote me while I was away at college. I was homesick and so my dad wrote from the perspective of our family dog and drew little pictures in the margins. Gosh that was a cute one and I still have it. I'll have to find that and scan it ...
I sort of lost track of letter writing after I had my family and career and of course, with the introduction of the internet I connected with people online.
I rediscover mail art and penpalling about 10 years ago when my dogs were members of Doggyspace.com. They exchanged postcards with other dogs and through those exchanges I met someone (postmuse) who was doing mail art. I tweaked my scrapbooking skills into multi-media skills and I am now hooked on mailart.
I've been at swapbot for nearly 8 years. I'm mostly exchanging ATCs and handmade postcards these days.

I like playing with collage, mixed media, hand carving rubber stamps, buying rubber stamps, owning more rubber stamps and paper than I can ever use, playing with my gelli plates, Sizzix die cutting machine and yeah, I like all that stuff and more.
I love that mailart has exposed me to many different styles, many different artists, many different perspectives.
I like exchanging naked handmade postcards and I usually do 5 x 7 inches in size. I find that size offers enough space to experiment while still being affordable to mail to someone. I like the postcards naked so the address, postage stamps and other postal markings are part of the piece.
I also enjoy making and trading ATCs. I meet with a local group to exchange ATCs monthly (Milwaukee ATC ).
If you're not into the rules at Swap-bot, perhaps you'd enjoy other sites such as International Union of Mail Art (IUOMA). While I try to be cool and layed back about deadlines and getting quailty items, basically I swap at Swap-bot because I enjoy the guarantees that the system provides.
*Postcards in see-through plastic bags. My post office charges me more for these and I always have postage due. Plus, I just don't like them.
*No scrapbook/planner quotes like "Live, Love, Laugh."
