About Me

Hi, First things first - My Name is CALY not Carly. Thanks

UPDATE 3/2016 - You may notice that most of the swaps I am joining are Book Related this year as I have missed reading and wanted 2016 to be a bit different for me. Still plan to paint and swap ATCs just not as much as before.

I am 56 and live in Knoxville TN with my Partner Kirche and our dog Pippin. A crazy lovable Dachshund! We have been together 12 years and finally got legally married in 2013 in NH, and it is now recognized Everywhere! Whoo Hoo! .

I am a self taught artist who loves watercolors, sketching, most of all Chinese Brush Painting. I am a Taoist and have a deep connection with all things Chinese. I belong to the Taoist Tai Chi Society.
My art tends to be in the Chinese style or simple watercolors. I do not do much crafting or mixed media.

I also love Nature, macro photography, medieval history, reading and cooking.

My favorite artist is Nicholas Roerich. This is an ATC reproduction of one of his paintings

I joined swap bot to swap ATCs! They are a passion of mine. I also enjoy swapping Pocket Letters and Postcards.

You can see some of my other artwork, including more of my ATCs at my Website - Caly's Corner. The link is above!

Favorite Books

I read the Tao Te Ching regularly and love books by Lisa See and Amy Tan.

For Book Swaps I would prefer Historical Fiction the most, or Fantasy. I do not like Romance novels or Westerns. Thanks!

Favorite Music

I listen mostly to Instrumental music, either New Age or Chinese Folk Music, or Zen

Favorite Television

Not a big TV person, though I love shows like Bones, Criminal Minds, and Grey's Anatomy. I don't do sitcoms or reality shows with the exception of So You Think You Can Dance.

I am hooked on Game of Thrones and Scandal

Collections -

As I have gotten older I have tried to limit my collections because I have learned that life is not all about 'stuff".

I do now occasionally collect Chinese related items like small vases or statues and I have a HUGE collection of books on Taoism.

Mostly I collect memories because these are the things that will always be with you.

And of course I collect ATCs!! They are the best!! I am especially fond of ATCs of TREES.

Things that make me Happy 8-D

ANY AND ALL THINGS ASIAN! - I have a deep respect and love of the Chinese culture and like all things with an Asian influence or design.

I LOVE the color Green in all shades and after that yellows and browns (the colors of Nature)

Hawks most definitely catch my eye, they are my totem.

Mushrooms I think are so cool and I always notice them as well. I love to photograph them.

Never miss a Dachshund either, they make me smile

I have a strong connection with the Moon and love the night sky when she is in it.

Recently I have also fallen in love with Hedgehogs ! I think they are adorable

I know art is about self expression and I respect that as I put myself into my Art as well. However there are a few things I would prefer NOT to receive:

I am not a fan of the color Pink (in large amounts) or Lace and frills, as such. Please limit this if possible.

Along with that PLEASE do not send me anything Peppermint Flavored, I do NOT Like it at all!

I do Not want Christian religious Icons or Bible verses. I respect your beliefs but hate Proselytizing.

I do not like anything to do with Drugs, Smoking, Violence or Gore.

Finally (and this is weird) but Baby Dolls and Dolls with realistic looking faces creep me out. LOL

  • When it comes to Postcards, I love them and I would like them sent naked with a real stamp if possible, the way they were meant to be sent. 8-)

Also unless it is from a foreign country, I prefer non-touristy cards.(Those with the state printed on the front) I really enjoy Art or Animals, or Nature postcards the best. Thanks!

And when it comes to TEA -

No Mint or Green Teas Please. Black Teas or Fruit Teas preferred.

That "1" was a user going on a down-rating binge for no good reason on very old swaps. Questionable Swapper has her own thread.

Hi Caly! Thanks for finding me on here! I sooo know what you mean about this being a time-whirlpool that really sucks you down into it! I'm a victim of that, myself. I got a little carried away in my first month (which I'm still in the middle of, lol.) But it's such fun, how can I say no? :-)

Anyway, I'm just waiting to become eligible to join you in Carpe Librum. I'm really excited about it and hope that July 13 gets here fast! :-)

KSENiA on Mar 13, 2016:

Well, it was suppose to be smaller... Ups. I just started reading long awaited sequel to Jennifer Foehner Wells Confluence series - Remanence. If you like nice Space opera with interesting female scientist lead and a little romantic element - you should try it. Also it has great cover art.

Interesting Book Facts:

  • The Japanese word ‘tsundoku’ means ‘buying a load of books and then not getting round to reading them’.
  • SF writer Isaac Asimov is the only author to have published a book in 9 out of the 10 Dewey library categories.
  • The first book bought on Amazon was called Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought.
  • In order to feel close to it, Joan Didion often sleeps in the same room as the book she is working on.
  • The earliest known written instance of the word ‘book’ is in a book by Alfred the Great.

What KateKintail is currently reading (a strange variety):

  • The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex
  • You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost): A Memoir by Felicia Day
  • Ultimate Spider-Man, Vol 16: Deadpool by Brian Michael Bendis, others
  • Othello by William Shakespeare
  • The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh: A Walk Through the Forest that Inspired the Hundred Acre Wood by Kathryn Aalto

I don't read much Historical Fiction or Fantasy. It's not that I don't like either, it's just that I like other stuff more. :) My favorite HF is The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Have you read it? It's one of my all time favorite books. It's a mystery about books and I really enjoyed it. I don't know that I've read just a regular fantasy, now that I've thinking about it. I've read some Urban Fantasy and enjoy the Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

I hope you've been enjoying some good books lately!

Hello! I love books and reading (as I'm sure all of us in the group do)! I hope you like the pictures that I have chosen. I recently started my master's in library science degree, so I've focused my pictures on libraries and librarians.

smadronia on Mar 11, 2016:

Hello! Smadronia here for the CL: Book Related Profile Comment.

I'm surprised to find someone else who doesn't really care for the romance genre. I thought I was mostly alone in my not being fond of them. I can't say it's an active dislike, but I'm not a fan.

I am fond of fantasy novels, although I prefer the ones with magic or fantastic creatures, and less on the politics. If you're in the mood for a good, quick read, The Last Dragonlord by Joanne Bertin is one of my favorite fantasy novels. The next two books aren't great, but the first is a fun read about were dragons.
