About Me

I'm a 39-year-old Aussie male who has a passion for art of all kinds, most particularly music and visual art.

A generally friendly and happy-go-lucky person, I'm sometimes insecure, and far from perfect. I value people who are genuine, sensible, and considerate of others, but still know how to let their hair down and have a bit of fun.

I play a little guitar and like to write as well. Have written a few songs over the years but nothing "chartbusting" as yet.

I've always been one to challenge people's comfort zones, especially those that are instilled in them by "societally accepted" influences. I so enjoy pushing the boundaries, so to speak...

Things I like to do art-wise:

Write songs and poetry, Draw, paint, collage (especially for postcards or greeting cards), "alter" things (take something already created and "change" it...not into something else, but alter it so you know what it is but so it looks totally unlike it once did. Favourites to alter: guitars, and shoes), I've made tons of ATCs over the years (I'm a little past it now and seek to do new stuff, but given the right theme, I might be tempted to go again), And making and sharing themed CD mixes (I take great pleasure in designing covers and CD art as well)

MY POSTAL ADDRESS (just to save trouble):

Brendan O'Brien PO Box 4034 Marketplace Bendigo, Victoria. 3550 AUSTRALIA

Favorite Music

Hmmm...this could be asking for types, or for particular artists. And doesn't everyone say that they like all kinds??? Hahaha. I have a very diverse spectrum of musical tastes, although not all kinds appeal to me.

I appreciate primarily "story-telling music", which can be from any genre though most of the time it seems to be most prevalent in folky, country, and rock music. Music is a huge part in my life so I'll give you a bit of a list of music I own (have over 800 CDs so I'll constrain the list):

  • Tom Waits
  • Paul Kelly
  • Weddings Parties Anything
  • Overnight Jones
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Steve Earle
  • Mick Thomas & The Sure Thing
  • Johnny Cash
  • Bruce Springsteen

  • Iggy Pop
  • Elvis Costello
  • John Lee Hooker
  • Cold Chisel
  • Black47

ok, that's enough...you get the drift?

Postcard LOVE

I love sending and receiving postcards, which is a lot of fun, but most of all I enjoy making postcards, and receiving other's hand-made postcards. You know, it's like getting pocket-sized pieces of original art!

And just for a swap I'm in at the moment, personal favourites for themes of postcards are:

Music (artists, albums, tracks, instruments), Nudity (preferably tasteful if it is sent as a postcard, in the open, but I think any nude art is wonderful), Photography, Trees, and Comics and Cartoons!

Comment: Thank you for the nice card. I don't smoke at all, and I also really hate it. Of course I don't hate people who are smoking, but the smoke....eeeuuuhh yak. In the Netherlands we finally have the rule that you can't smoke in a cafe, bar or restaurant anymore and that's soo nice. Great idea. I liked the card. Take care and let's keep the air clean ;-)

Comment: Wow Brendan what a great card - I love it and it made me laugh. Wish I could draw like you too!!! Wonderful, wonderful stuff!!!! Sam xoxo
Response: *smiling* So nice of you to say that, and thanks for the heart also, but I had to giggle at you wishing you could draw like me because I didn't think that was anything special, but they say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, so there you go...

Comment: What a beautiful city you live in.
Response: It truly is a beautiful city (though you must be aware that they usually try to show the most attractive bits on postcards), but it is the city of my birth, not where I live now. I'm only about 100 minutes' drive away though, and get there kinda frequently. I'm glad you liked the card... :O)

Comment: Thanks for the beautiful postcard!!! It sounds like you live in a really fun city, full of culture and fun things to do and see!
Response: Well, I don't live there anymore, but Melbourne is still a great place to live. I actually live about 100 minutes' drive north of Melbourne now, and it is a great town too. But it is good to see from your comment that you took notice of what I wrote. That is often what I think is the best part of a postcard, no matter how beautiful the image(s) are on it, what someone sees fit to write is wonderful to share, especially if they take the time to not just say hi and bye.

Comment: Clever and funny ransom note! Thanks Brendan you super scared me out :P
Response: And isn't it a wonderful pic??? I love laughter, and if that was a larger picture I would've used it for a postcard at sometime, but I'm happy with where it went... Thanks for the heart, too!

Comment: Very cool card! I'm sure there were lots of zebras prancing across the world for this round, but I'm sure mine were the only ones doing it "zolliferously"! ;-)
Response: I think you are absolutely right (on both counts)! I actually had another really good idea for the card but from memory the details of the swap said that the letter had to be somewhere prominent on the card, and my better idea had no way to do that (or that I wanted to, anyway). I'm very glad you liked it...very very glad.

Comment: Thank you for the great package, it was very interesting to see the stuff you had chosen and it was nice to see what you look like. I do have a DVD player and plan to watch the Aussie Football this weekend, something I don't know alot about.
Response: So glad you liked it all! It was a bit of a challenge, that's for sure, but I thought the "Aussie Rules" DVD was the best thing in there. Hope you had fun!

Hi Brendan! Thanks for the dumb postcard you sent! So funny! Wait. Anyone else reading this is going to think I'm terribly rude. I should have typed "DUMB". Sending something your way next week! :)

Basilika on Aug 1, 2008:

The good news is that your postcard has arrived, thank you! The bad news is that the picture on it has not. If I were to speculate I'd say it looks more like adhesive malfunction than postal machine violence. Now I'm extremely curious to know who it was that's talking!

Aw, thanks! blush I'm really glad you like it. It's freehand, I like to just stare at the blank paper for a while until I know where the lines are supposed to go, and then I draw them. I'm looking forward to seeing what you send. Yay for mailart!

FairySweet on Jul 20, 2008:

Brendan! Got your super cute postcard in the mail today. Thank you! Something on the way to you soon!

Basilika on Jul 12, 2008:

Putting your address on your profile like that for everyone to see is how you get strange swedes to send you handmade postcards. I'm mailing mine tomorrow.

Thank you very much for the coffee cup! I didn't have a horoscope cup so it was really nice to have one :D And the box was fun! I think I'm gonna put something in there (usually I just give those kind of boxes away but that one is so nice I'm gonna keep it) And the letters were nice :) THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Thankyou very much for your wonderful package! Who would have thought that the world was so small? If this weren't a private swap I'd have given you 5 and a heart (I'll work out how to do it eventually, lol). The extra gift was fantastic as well - my first SLR, and a rather sparkly one at that ;) Thankyou you again! :D

manxkity on Jul 3, 2008:
