I'm Gigi. I love sending and receiving letters and packages. Decorating envelopes and writing long letters has been my favorite hobby since I was a teenager. Coming home to find something special in my mailbox always makes me so excited! (this frequently results in skipping and jumping back from the mailbox, although I refrain when it's icy out).
I live in a small town in central Oregon. My town is full of Cowboys and amazing thrift stores. I'm always finding vintage treasures, like postcards, ephemera and old magazines I can use for collage projects and mail art.
I'm a huge fan of handmade treasures both old and new. I would describe my style as art deco meets mid century modern meets kitsch. (I'm all over the place). I drink a lot of tea (all kinds), collect abandoned homemade stuffed animals for my tiny stuffed animal museum (currently housed in a bookcase in my living room).
I love to cook and bake, and I often make bread because it makes my house smell great! I love to ride my bike, and drink dark beer and eat pizza. I feel most at home in nature, and I spend as much time in the woods as possible (regardless of weather, you can usually find me outside).
I write letters and send mail to help keep me inspired! Plus, a walk to the mailbox is much more rewarding when there is something better than bills inside the box!
I like to make things from yarn and fabric and paper. Recently, I've been crocheting a lot of tea cozies, because an adorable teapot is a wonderful thing! I've also been making animal masks.
I make a lot of collage art, usually very small pieces (inside of old matchboxes), but sometimes I make larger pieces for show flyers or other events. I typically use old magazines and damaged cancelled stamps for these projects.
I also like to sew. I used to make stuffed animals, but recently I've taken up quilting. I sometimes make costume accessories because you never know when you will need to dress up like a lion. Plus, you can never have too many costumes!
I draw and make small zines in my free time. I'm learning to be better with watercolors. I've been making some potato stamps. I'm happiest when I'm making something, so I'm constantly trying to create new things.
I don't watch much television, but I love movies. My partner and I have been watching all the films that won the Oscar for Best Picture. We've made it to the 1960s and most of the films so far have been excellent.
It's difficult for me to pick a favorite movie, but I love films by Michel Gondry and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. I think they appeal to my love of whimsy.
I read a lot, but I'm always bringing home new books, so I'm never without reading material.
The Tin Drum is my all time favorite book. Mary Poppins also holds a spot on the list. Recently, I've read and loved The Book Thief, The Night Circus, and Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore. I highly recommend all three.
Dislikes: I'm very easy to please. If you take time putting together your swap, I'm sure to love it. The only things I dislike are bible quotes and crosses/Christian things. These items would find a better home with someone else.
I'm lucky enough to be friends with a few current and former mail carriers. That is one rough job! Because I value receiving mail so much, I try not to cause postal issues for my mail carrier. For example, she has to pay out of pocket to bring me mail with postage due. That seems like a hardship for her, so I'm always ready with tons of exact change to pay her back.
If mail I send you ever falls short on postage, please let me know. I will send you a special package to make it right!
Also, there are a lot of good stamps out there right now! Stamps on a package or envelope always makes me extra happy, especially foreign stamps. When I travel, I typically return home with postage stamps as souvenirs. They travel well (obviously!) and tell fantastic stories! Mail is simply the best!
