About Me

Howdy!

Favorite Music: pop, Celtic, etc. Books: Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie's, Pride and Prejudice, and so many more. I teach English composition and literature, so too many favorites in this area. I also enjoy reading books about Christian theology/biblical studies. Television: These days, I watch anything on Netflix and love Food Network's Chopped series. Hobbies: Painting, reading, collecting comic books and fairy tale/fantasy art, cross-stitch.

So that's a bit about me :) Thanks for taking a look and feel free to say hello!

Postcards

I like all sorts of postcards: tourist, handmade literary, fairy/fairytale illustrations, paintings, flowers, mythology/folklore, Christian-themed, landscapes, lighthouses, birds, nature-related, black and white images, etc.

A few dislikes: monsters, abstract art.

I am not picky about postcards. I like seeing the creativity of others, so send what you like!

Comment: I love the poetry journal! Thank you so much! I’ll be reading and re-reading for quite some time. We picked some of the same poets to highlight, but others were new to me. My favorite out of the ones that you picked would have to be the Emily Dickinson poem, If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking. I had fun reading the backstory of some poets I included. It was an interesting swap, I know that I learned a lot. Thanks Again!
Response: Thank you for the rating! Glad you like the journal!

Comment: Belated happy birthday and belated thank you for this charming Rumplestiltskin card! (It reminds me of the Reading Rainbow episode at the Renaissance fair, I think, that featured a beautifully-illustrated telling of that tale :) I'm glad you enjoyed your last visit to the Crescent City! And congratulations to your daughter as she begins voice lessons. Advice-wise, I'd say practice diligently and with focus (as a college student, I wish I'd had those articles from leading instrumentalists and performers about practicing specific tasks/details efficiently vs. merely repeating something over and over); hydrate adequately; experience as much theatre, operas (I just discovered the Met Opera's streaming service, and there's also BroadwayHD and a wealth of gems on YouTube), ballet/dance, and instrumental music as you can; cultivate versatility (I wish I had studied how to belt high and that I had a musical theatre soprano mixed voice -- like Laura Osnes, Rachel Potter, for instance; my program was mostly classical, and belting was controversial); and be sure to pay attention to the text of a song or aria and tell a story; I don't think my voice performance program stressed the acting component enough (we had coachings but no actual acting classes, we weren't encouraged to participate in non-musical plays, nor was the idea of branching out into television and film acting ever really discussed; I had no idea in high school that Broadway actors or opera singers could be that versatile) -- a beautiful, well-trained voice is just one part of being a singer/actor. I remember reading a New York Times interview with one of my favorite singing actors, Judy Kuhn (her ability to switch from her silvery soprano to her earthy belt is mesmerizing!), in which she said the most thrilling thing about musical theatre is when she cannot tell when someone switches from speaking to singing. If that person has a beautiful voice, it's a bonus :) My wonderful director/choreographer once reminded my classmates and me that, in a musical or opera, a character breaks into song because he/she is so moved to express an idea or emotion, and that the words that come from our mouths are supposed to seem spontaneous. Hope this helps! Happy singing :)
