About Me

Hello. I am a librarian in the UK.

In my spare time I enjoy mooching around museums and art galleries. I also love the cinema and the theatre. I love folk music (mainly British trad stuff) and try to get to gigs when I can. I love learning new things and get frustrated that there are so many things in the world which I don't know about!

Favorite Crafts

I love trying out new crafts and my favourite is sewing, although I am very much a beginner. At the moment I am more interested in learning how to alter thrifted clothes than making stuff from scratch. I will give most crafts a try, but hate knitting and crochet because I find them too difficult and stressful. I am also not too enamoured with scrapbooking and papercrafts. I enjoy photography and have recently bought my first D-SLR. I have recently been cutting down on the amount of crafts I do as I found I was becoming a 'jack of all trades, master of none'!

Favorite Books

I am a huge book lover (no surprise given my profession). I will give most things a try, but I am not keen on chick lit/romance and science-fiction. I especially like crime novels, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. I love Scandinavian crime and am keen to discover crime novels from other countries. As far as non-fiction is concerned I mainly read history, travel and sociology/psychology/current affairs. I love to take part in reading challenges as it encourages me to try out different books.

Favorite Movies

I love Bollywood films as they are such great escapism. I am also a big horror fan and I especially like the horror films coming out of Japan and Korea. I love discovering new films and am currently challenging myself to watch 101 films from different countries. I have a massive wish list on my DVD rental site because I will give almost any film a go, although I am not really into a lot of typically girly films (I do have a weakness for French rom coms though).

Favorite Television

I don't watch a huge amount of television and I am always a few years behind when it comes to popular TV series! I love European crime drama and my favourites are Spiral, The Killing, The Bridge and Unit One. I like Doctor Who, although I am not a fanatic. I enjoy crime series, both old-fashioned ones like Poirot and Miss Marple as well as more gritty ones.

Orangutans (I adopt a grumpy orangutan called Amy who lives in an ape conservation park not far from where I live).

Writing paper & notecards. I have a bit of a fetish for beautiful and quirky stationery. I also love gorgeous notebooks/journals.

Anything Paris themed.

Cinnamon-flavoured candy/gum (we cannot get this in the UK)

I like anything to do with India. I love Bollywood movies, Indian fashion, art and design.

I am fascinated by Japan and hope to visit one day. I love pictures of Japanese gardens and images of Buddhas.

I also have a bit of a thing for Scandinavia, especially Sweden and Denmark and hope to travel there in the next few years. There are MANY places in the world that I would love to visit.

I like planners and so like accessories for that (especially planner stickers which are difficult to find in the UK).

Other Random Things I Like:

Medieval/Neo-Gothic design

Cherry blossom

Alice in Wonderland

The Victorian era

Reusable shopping bags

Quirky contemporary fabrics. Well, any fabrics really as I don't have a big stash yet.

Gil Elvgren and other retro pin-up art of this kind.

Cemetery art. I also love Simon Marsden's spooky photography.

Jelly Belly jelly beans (especially coconut and sizzling cinnamon)

I am allergic to champagne. I know no one is likely to send me a bottle of champagne, but sometimes friends mistakenly give me champagne truffles! I also have trouble with ear-rings in that I can only wear ones with gold posts or I get a rash. My skin is okay with other types of jewellery not being made of precious metal though.

I am not religious, so would not want anything that is overly religious. I don't mind things such as Christmas cards with reproductions of religious paintings on though.

Comment: Thanks for resending ! Ten days in Madhouse sounds really interesting as well as sad. Wow! You read a nonfiction from 1887! Great! Definitely on my TBR! BTW did you like Ruskin Bond?
Response: Thanks for the heart. I did enjoy the Ruskin Bond book, but my favourite books by him are the ones about life in Mussoorie.

Comment: Wow! Wish I could walk through that library. And I'm out of breath just reading about the hill. Beautiful street art. Thanks for sharing your day ;)

Comment: Thanks so much for sharing! Those are some gorgeous images, and I loved the insight into your life :) I hope to travel to your neck of the woods someday and see some of those in person! I also giggled at the hill because there's a lot of those around here too, so I know what you mean!

Comment: Great resolutions, Laura! I wish you success in following through on them! Your resolution to read more non-fiction . . . might I suggest that instead of aiming for a percentage, you try to read one or two a month? :-) And I too hope to get to a lot of the unread books I now have on my "shelves." I had subscriptions to a lot of book boxes in the latter half of 2017, but have I read the books I received? Only two out of at least 14! So I have most of the unread ones on MY resolution list, as well! :-) Thank you so much for sharing! (And I'm sorry for the late rating!) <3
Response: I have never been tempted by those book boxes because I know I would soon be overrun with unread books!

Comment: Thanks for the 🖤!! Halfway up that monument, I was regretting it. I made it to the top only to find out I was too short to see out the windows anyway. My 6 foot tall MR was just able to see out of them but they were sooo dirty so... back down we went. Going down those 291 steps didn't take as long as going up them, but was just so much harder. lol

Thank you so much for the book! I've heard lots of good things about it but haven't read it yet -- it will be a real treat on Christmas Eve. And the postcards are great -- thank you so much for everything.

I'm planning on travelling to Cornwall next April and will likely go there by train - so I'll be coming through Taunton! Perhaps I can wave at you as I pass :)
