Please note as of 11-09, please send me a PM if you don't receive something from me in the allotted time. Our mail has been very sporatic lately due to budget cuts and weather. Thanks for your understanding.
When it comes to art, I like small intimate things that I can hold in my hand or put in my pocket. I love all folk art--especially Mexican. I am a printmaker, bookmaker and I use quite a bit of collage in my own work. I generally stick to a monochromatic value scheme, adding a little color here and there. I use layers and I like to challenge people to think about what they see. I teach elementary school art, which is a blast. My students have such a nice sense of spontaneity in their work, I am inspired everyday.
I grew up on the west coast in the Bay Area. I love it out there. SF is where I went to school, majoring in sculpture and printmaking. The city was a great place to inspire creativity. Despite my 5 jobs and school, I managed to make some work I am proud of.
I now live in Colorado where I teach. I received my teaching degree at the University of Wyoming which has a great pedagogy program as well as fine art. I loved it there as well and keep in touch with friends that have gone on to be very established artists. When I decided to go into teaching I was trying to work through the "artist first or teacher first" conundrum. Actually I am still working on it. I figure teaching is my job, which I just happen to love and making art is my lifes' work--and being prolific here keeps me grounded.
I am married and have a 7 year old son. He likes to work in the studio with me. I set up a table with lots of superhero-themed collage material. We have a blast. My husband likes to join us in the studio as well. His likes include skulls and crossbones--most of the art he makes, he titles..."but is it art?" He cracks me up.
Hobbies, other than making art include: cooking, gardening-both flowers and veggies. I like to push the limits on what grows here. I do a lot of transplanting-that's fun. I like to watch movies that make me think, foreign films, indie, offbeat film festival winners. I generally read historical fiction, sommerset mag, fiber paper scissors. I spend most of my free time at secondhand stores, antique shops, flea markets and garage sales. I have also been known to wander aimlessly around art stores. I like vintage drawings, like botany, sea life, BUGS--love bugs, old medical drawings etc.
Art is so personal--isn't it? I really like quirky art--I love collage and found object sculpture. I respond to work that makes me think about things in different ways. I don't like cutesy things at all. I'm not a fan of Disney, or puppies, kittens, smiley faces or Kawaii. I love old folk art, like I mentioned before, any kind and from anywhere. I collect ATC's, magnets and fun, different art and collage supplies. I like to find different uses for ordinary objects like plastic bugs, postage stamps and small action figures.
As far as my own work goes, I collect vintage watercolor tins (hopefully with paint in them--used is great) to alter into shrines. I also make shrines from other vintage tins. I like the dilapidation that age and use add. I always use text in my work.
It took me a few swaps to realize this, but some of the art I have been receiving (if I have received it at all) looks like maybe not too much thought went into it. I take a good amount of time on each piece to ensure my partner will like it or at least appreciate the time and effort that went into it. Integrity is big for me. Thanks
