Description:

Do you like ATCs? Do you like zines? How about an ATC that is also a zine?

For this swap you will make three copies of a mini zine that, when folded, has the same dimentions as an ATC (2.5" X 3.5"). You can make it on the computer, or do it by hand and then make three photocopies. Content is completely up to you. Make it a minimum of eight printed pages (includes front and back cover). You'll send one copy to each of three partners.

If you're and overachiever and prefer to make three completely different zines, that would be fine too.

I'm going to give quite a bit of time to finish them, but feel free to let me know if you don't think it's enough time, and I can change it. Let me know if there are any questions you have or things that need clarification too. I'm just going by the seat of my pants with this idea.

It should go without saying that I will drop anyone with a low rating. New swappers are welcome, but due to a recent problem with non-senders I will also be banning anyone who does not have their profile filled out. This swap is international.

What a fab idea! I have been looking for some inspiration and something new after feeling a bit fed up with the same old things and here this is. I think this will be great.

crweixelman 11/21/2006 #

Awesome! I'm glad to see some interest as I wasn't sure if it was a dumb idea or not. lol

alteredtome 11/21/2006 #

Christel,

Please give a bit more information on what a zine is.

Thank you, Chris

crweixelman 11/21/2006 #

Hi Chris! I don't really feel qualified to answer this one, especially as this will personally be my first zine to make, so I'll refer you to the Wikipedia listing:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zine

As far as content goes, there's a great amount of variation out there, and pretty much anything goes. I've read some that contained just a short story, a poem, artwork, recipes, or a full magazine like set-up with stories and articles.

alteredtome 11/21/2006 #

Ok, so a zine is a small magazine. Now is the subject matter of ours to be ATCs or any subject and just the size of an ATC?

alteredtome 11/21/2006 #

And yet another questionรขโ‚ฌยฆshould it be like a book formate (sewn or stapled in the center and folded in half) or 5x7 inches sheet when folded into quarters makes a 2.5x3.5 inches ATC?

twobluecrows 11/21/2006 #

They could be an accordian-fold zine with two ATC cards for the covers and a ribbon to hold it closed. That would be fairly simple to make and work well for the size. Cyn

crweixelman 11/22/2006 #

alteredtome: The subject matter can be anything you like and it should be the size of an ATC. It should be in a book format, but you can accomplish that however you like, either by folding and stapling, making it accordian style, whatever suits you. Hope this helps!

alteredtome 11/22/2006 #

thank you. I think I get the concept now. Will have to put my thinking cap on and come up this an idea.

SharonP 11/22/2006 #

Fun idea. I'm glad you thought of it. s

Susi 11/23/2006 #

hmmm. I have always wondered what a zine is... I guess now's the time to find out! Sounds like fun, I think I'll join! susi

user5093 12/ 1/2006 #

This sounds great. I havn't made one in a long time.

mariannealice 12/ 4/2006 #

What a great idea..I did a small zine for a matchbox swap and just loved the format...can't wait to do start this one. And thank you for the long lead up time- very much appreciated at this time of the year!

user4005 12/ 6/2006 #

kinda poor a little bit and only wanna use one sheet? http://www.flickr.com/photos/elizabethgenco/sets/72157594276405114/ awesome tutorial!

Erna 12/ 8/2006 #

I've signed up for this swap, and now I need help. I cannot buy standard trading card sleeves in South Africa, where I live, and the special express postage charged by sites selling them over the internet makes them ridiculously expensive. Would anybody be willing to pop a few in an airmail envelope, and help me out?

Click on my name above this message, and send me an email. I'll let you have my snailmail address, and we can talk about what you'd like in return. For 20 sleeves, I'd be willing to make you an African beadwork ATC. Have a look at:

http://www.zakerna.homestead.com/craftsnstuff.html#anchor_51

How does that sound?

Erna xx

crweixelman 12/ 9/2006 #

Erna, I can send you some. No problem at all! They are very inexpensive here. Just contact me with your address and I will send them out to you. :)

Susi 12/11/2006 #

I have never bought the plastic ATC sleeves, I've always just sent them out well padded in a bubble mailer or in a gretting card. I haven't had anyone complain yet! Anyway, I have dropped from this swap one only to join again, and I don't want to drop again, but I am starting to get nervous about it, I am not sure what I am going to do, or what theme I will do...but I think when it gets down to the wire, I'll get my brain revved up and will be able to do this! Wish me luck! susi

thehoneybunnymn 12/12/2006 #

is this international or just USA?

Susi 12/13/2006 #

Hi everyone just leaving a message so you know. This is Susi's daughter Kaity, my mom is in the hospital right now we aren't sure for how long but hopefully not to long. She may or may not be out in time for this or any of her other swaps but she said she will try and get them done at the hospital.

Lots of Love, Kaity

zombuki 12/16/2006 #

Kaity: Thanks for letting us know, please tell Susi we hope she feels better soon!

Susi 12/19/2006 #

thanks y'all! I am now out of the hospital, and frantically trying to get an idea of how to do this! I actually don't find the format difficult (meaning the size and pages, etc) but the zine itself is intimidating me a lot! I have looked up the wikipedia site info, but I think I just need to see a real zine to get the feel for it. I AM NOT QUITTING! But is there anyone out there that can help? I feel like I am Gretel lost in the forest without Hansel! whine whine whine, bitch bitch bitch,,,, sorry I just had to do that. Really if anyone could help, I'd surely appreciate it, gracias por adelante... susi

zombuki 12/20/2006 #

Hi! There are zines on my Etsy page: http://riotsqurrl.etsy.com/ - I'd be happy to send you a few of my extras if you'd like.

Susi 12/22/2006 #

Oh Brigitte, That would be WONDERFUL! What I send you in exchange? I have an idea, it's a poem I wrote last January (I won't say anymore so I don't ruin it!) if I can find the poem. But I am going to look at the ones on your Etsy page (What is "etsy" by the way? Questions questions question???!!! Do I know anything? LOL susi

zombuki 12/27/2006 #

Susi: Etsy is a place where you sell handmade items (or supplies) in little shops, sort of like ebay, but way way better! Go ahead and email me at readdwell @ yahoo.com and I'd be happy to swap some zines for a poem :3

Everyone else: I made a bunch of extras so if anyone wants to trade after the swap is over just let me know!

twobluecrows 01/ 2/2007 #

twobluecrows 01/10/2007 #

Does a Zine have to have words?

user3370 01/12/2007 #

Got a zine from Joswaps... Awesome!

Susi 01/13/2007 #

I sent my zines off a few days ago, so cyn and melissa be on the lookout! I just hope I made it the "right" way! susi

DreamHope 01/13/2007 #

Susi: I just received your zine in the mail today, and I assure you that it is done the right way. It is a gorgeous ATC and a fantastic zine. I have it on my coffee table right now, and even in the clutter, my partner noticed it and couldn't resist picking it up and flipping through it. It will have a place of honour amongst my art-book collection.

dreamstealer 01/13/2007 #

sibyl 01/19/2007 #

Cyn, Got your Mini Zine today. It is really cool - I especially like the pull-out card that explains the photos.

BTW, I love the pics! I lived in Groton for two years and commuted to the University of Connecticut in Storrs. It was a lovely drive, especially in the fall.

SharonP 01/19/2007 #

twobluecrows, it doesn't look like anyone answered your question. I don't think a zine has to have words, so if it helps to have one other person say OK, there you have it! sharon

scottgirl 01/20/2007 #

Dreamstealer-I got your fab little zine today...thank you! I love the carved faces. I do some ATC's with kids and this will be another wonderful inspiration to show where else one can go with this little art form. Fun stuff. I'll enjoy having it in my collection!

SharonP 01/23/2007 #

Dreamstealer, Joswaps, and Nickerjac -- minizines went out in today's mail, hope you get them soon!

sallyacious 01/25/2007 #

Jack's Mom, Quixotic Goat and mujeralborde, I dropped your zines in the mail this evening.

dreamstealer 01/26/2007 #

Sharon, Your mini zine is here in my hands and it feels good....smile...I think it's a chilly winter zine...I'll be showing it to my art students....you must get a lot of snow....Thanks

scottgirl 01/27/2007 #

Kath-received your mini-zine today and I really had to smile...of all the cookies recipes in all of the world, you just happened to feature my VERY FAVORITE!! How fun. I notice you like to carve so I assume the cookie carving is your creation! The two zines I received so far are quite different...it's always great to see all the takes on a given idea. Thanks, Kath.

twobluecrows 02/ 2/2007 #

Sharon, thanks! I compromised by adding a text page "table of contents" for my photo zine.

Sibyl, Small world! I was born in Groton, a Navy brat, and moved around a lit before settling finally here again in CT, up not far from UCONN. I'm glad you enjoy the pics of "home" Cyn

sallyacious 02/ 6/2007 #

Esther,

I just realized I never let you know that I got your zine in December. I think it's fantastic. Such a great idea. I love the story.
