You can send anyone (they don't have to be a contact) an e-mail through Flickr by going to their profile page and clicking on 'send Flickr mail'. A message will come up in their Flickr inbox and they'll also get a message in their ordinary e-mail account to let them know.
You can also reply to a message that someone has sent you. Simple really. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it once you start playing around with it a little. You can't break anything!
