About Me

News! I am taking a break from swap-bot. But feel free to send me any messages.

My name is Riikka and I am a 24 year old girl from Finland. I recently graduated from art school and now I am a painter/postal service worker. I live with my dear boyfriend in Helsinki. I'm here to share creativity with people around the world.

Please have a closer look at my profile if you are wondering about what I like and what to send me. Click the links above if you want to see what I make and a small list of my Etsy faves. Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions.

Things I like

  • Painting, especially with watercolours and egg tempera
  • Making decorative books, collages & other mail art stuff
  • Forests and long, silent walks in nature
  • Mushrooms
  • Computer adventure/role playing games: Machinarium, Grim Fandango, Chrono Trigger, Anachronox, Monkey Island, Syberia, The Longest Journey and Sam&Max
  • Cinemas, art museums and galleries
  • The dreamworld and other bizarre things that happen in my subconscious
  • Traveling, especially slow traveling by train, boat, bike or foot! I have never been outside of Europe though.
  • Food and wine! Cooking and baking! Yum.
  • I'm crazy about organic colourful fruit. Like avocados, juicy sweet pears, mangos and blood oranges. Seriously. They're some of my favorite things. I also collect avocado seeds. Why? I don't know. They're pretty.
  • Taking care of the environment
  • Colors: Anything from ocean colours and dark blue through purple to cherry red is a favorite of mine. I like earthy greens and browns as well. I especially love and use bright and strong colors with unusual combinations. There is no color that I hate.
  • Scents/spices/tastes: Coconut, rose, ginger, citrus, liquorice, chili, most fruit and berries
  • Animals: dogs, goats, birds, whales, pangolins... but I do like almost all animals!
  • Punk/grunge rockers
  • Comic books and authors: Tank Girl, Powr Mastrs, Peanuts, Jason, Moomins, Hure H, Tales of Woodsman Pete, Walt and Skeezix, Mon Fiston (My Boy) and Locas 1&2
  • Doc Martens boots!
  • Time travel
  • Weird, cute and scary shit

Favorite Music

Indie and singer-songwriter stuff. Electronic, instrumental and progressive rock! Music that is eclectic. Please give me recommendations. My long-time favorite band is Rilo Kiley.

Beck, Bill Callahan, Kaki King, Battles, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Lady Gaga, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, David Bowie, PJ Harvey, Elliott Smith, Joy Division and Animal Collective. Tuomas Skopa, Sydän, sydän, Taipuva Luotisuora and Päät.

Favorite TV & Movies

I've watched every episode of Prisoner, The Wire, Arrested Development, House, Dexter, True Blood, Six Feet Under, The Office (UK), Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Monk and Ugly Betty. I also like The Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park. The reality show geek in me loves the Next Top Model shows and Project Runway..

I am currently watching the new episodes of Dr. Who with my boyfriend (who has watched it plenty more than I have). :)

I'm only thinking about putting together a movie list because it's a bit difficult.. I love love watching movies! I would like to say that genre has nothing to do with it but the ones I really like are movies that have some element of darkness, fantasy or sci-fi in them. For example, Donnie Darko, Back to the Future and anything by Darren Aronofsky.

Please don't limit yourself to these and feel free to ask if you're not sure! :-) Communication is good, though I do like surprises. I love handmade things and I accept things from thrift stores or used things, as long as they are in good condition.

  • One or two teabags (I have so much tea already! You can send bigger packages if it's a tea swap or if it's really really good..)
  • Candy! Chocolate! Anything edible!!
  • Vegetarian recipes
  • Earrings and necklaces. Kitschy, vintage, weird and/or colorful.
  • Hair accessories and beads for my dreadlocks. Would love a dread wrap!
  • Knit and crocheted things
  • Something to keep me warm. (for socks: my shoe size is European 37-38, US 7)
  • A zine
  • Fabrics, yarns, ribbons, buttons etc.
  • Tiny things! They are accepted and loved.
  • Crafting materials, like paper with patterns and bright colors or handmade paper. Even tiny pieces are fine! Or any other flat items I can use in crafting.
  • Paint (watercolor, gouache, acrylic dry pigments..) and paintbrushes
  • Blank art postcards
  • Weird and cute mascots/dolls/creatures
  • Seashells and anything to do with them! They are my favorite nature-thingy.
  • Soap bars!!
  • Something steampunk or Day of the Dead/Día de los Muertos

I also accept happily any other postcards and stationary, especially kawaii stationary and such.

Dislikes/no thanks

  • Strong scents (essential oils and other natural scents are fine in moderation), try to keep cigarette smoke out of the mail packages as well please
  • Coffee (if you accidentally send me some, my boyfriend can drink it :D) or coffee flavouring
  • Black currant flavoring
  • Oil paints
  • Pastel/pink glittery crafting materials. I've received so much of this super girly stuff so please, give it to someone who really appreciates it! It doesn't matter if there is just a little bit of it.

Swap information

I always rate you if I have received your swap! And I will message you before rating a 1 or 3. I expect the same from you. Please contact me if I forget to rate for some reason! Or worse; if I forget to send! That hasn't happened yet though.

If you are waiting for an international package from me, please give it at least a couple of weeks! Sometimes they have taken over a month to arrive from Finland.

I was flaked on by @swinginginthetrees in the swap I love socks! - angeled by @lukrecja

Comment: Beautiful mail art piece, thank you!! ^_^
Response: I'm glad you like it! :) I made it so that you can cut the string and open it, if you wish. (it's not glued anywhere)

Comment: Eventhough it was a wee bit late, I love it. The book on bento looks interesting and inspires my to make some bento art. The chocolate and teas look yummy.

Comment: Beautiful fashion portrait and collage envelope. My daughter loves the fashion model and shoe postage stamps, too. Thanks!

Comment: Thanks for the owl PC with the eyelashes and eyes. Your eyes made it intact (unlike the eyes on the PCs I sent).
Response: Oh, spectacular! Thanks for the heart! Sorry about your PCs, I also had that happen with my other card.
Atropos rated for Hey! That postcard is watching me! on Jun 30, 2011
Comment: Very classy, indeed. ^^^Unfortunately I have to tell you that the lashes off during the journey . They would have been perfect, because the beautiful woman on the card actually is a boy! :D It´s in the German text on the postcard...We´ll may be he´s nevertheless going to invite the handsome 3000 years-old on the next painting for a cuppa. Who knows? Your pc made my day and I laughed a lot! Don´t mind the lashes. Thanks for writing such a nice text on the back.
Response: Thanks for the generous heart! Oh dear, I hope the boy isn't offended that I called him a lady. He looks quite feminine though! Too bad the eyes fell off, they were really cool! And I used so much glue, aww.
Comment: WOW - Thank you ever so much! You did a truly stunning job! I am in total awe over your sea creature! She is not going in my book! She is going in a frame for everyone to admire in my craftroom. What an outstanding piece of art - thank you so much for sending her my way.
Response: I was very inspired by this theme. Thanks so much for the appreciation! :)

Comment: I found a mysterious shoebox on my doorstep today covered in awesome stickers and doodles. I had a shitton of homework to do and wouldn't let myself open it until I was done and woooow was a reward I was! Thank you for the cute pocket sketchbook (I'm going to take it with me everywhere!) And all the cool stickers! I'm totally obbsessed with these marmalade candies they were almost as sweet as the eye stamp you got off my wishlist! The pencil holder and eraser came just in time too. My desk is a mess with pencils and bushes everywhere and my erasers are all worn down. Thank you thank you thank you! I'm beyond myself with happiness and I'm keeping the shoebox.
Response: Awesome !! I also ordered some stamps for myself from the same etsy shop and they are really good!
Comment: Amazing page! I love it so much. Thank you for taking into account my likes. The serpent is delightful!
Comment: OMG...the package alone would have been enough! Eye candy galore! Love, love all the stickers and deco tape! Love the newspaper in your language..this is a treasure to me...and the "lemona" soda can! The square of fabric with cats & umbrellas....I am speechless....I can't tell you how much I love it! All the decorated papers...wow...Poppy fab!!! The beads are amazing as are the tiny mosaic tiles and ink pad (I love green!). There was also a feather but I don't know from what kind of bird? Lastly, omg....CHOCOLATE. I had ::just:: said before I knew your package was in the mailbox that I wish I had some chocolate...so you can imagine how happy I was! LOL...I dove right into it...and it's wonderful! Thank you so much for your thoughtful and creative package. I also checked out your artwork and really love your style! Tons of hearts to you....
Response: Thanks for this huge comment and the compliments! :) Yay I'm so happy you like it! It may be that the feather flew there by accident because I don't remember adding it. :D The soda is one of my favorites, it's made by a company in Finland that makes their beverages using wind power. It was so much fun creating this package for you!!

Comment: I wish we had rating icons for extra-extra special swappers. A heart and a five is not enough! Fabulous and super generous package of yummy, unusual and inticing foods! Dried blueberries, banana sweetened chocolates, delightful and tasty eye-catching sweets, gummi hamburger!, exotic sugar and a big ole' tube of gourmet mustard...The teas look great too. I am a huge fan of nordqvist tea and miss not having it in my tea stash. Thanks so much for sending such a lovely, generous and thoughtful package my way!
Response: It's always rewarding when I put together a big package and the recipient loves it! :) Thanks for the nice words!! Perhaps we can do a tea swap some day. ;)

Comment: OMG! I think you should be late all the time. Lol. I loved and I meaned LOVED what I send to my partner. And this is waaaaay better. I can't believe you actually made this! I'll going to buy a frame this weekend and it's going up immediately. Thank you thank you thank you!

SaintUrsula rated for Mail Art #1 - Open Theme & Empty on Mar 12, 2011
Comment: Thank you so much for the gorgeous mail art! I love how bold and colorful it is, and the stamps were a perfect addition - I wish we had stamps in the US that were shapes other than rectangular!
Response: Yay I'm so happy it got there in one piece :) There are stamps in all different shapes here. Most of them are rectangular but then there are some that are really "out there". It's a lot of fun :)
Comment: Hello! Thank you for the lovely comment! It would appear as though we do have a lot in common! Maybe one day we should do a private surprise swap. Yes, yes, watch Spaced! It's only 2 seasons unfortunately. :( My interest in Dr. Who has waned in the most recent seasons...I don't really like the newest Doctor as much. As far as comedy horror, there are a few I can also recommend: there's one called Severance that's also British and there's a new one I saw on Netflix the other day called Ahh! Zombies! I think the kawaii images have probably been overdone, but they do a great job at breaking up the walls of text.
Response: Oh thanks so much for the recommendations! :-)
Comment: Thanks for the great comments :D
Comment: Thank you for the kind words about my chunky book pages, always nice to hear!!! It seems we have a lot in common! I'm sure it wont be long til we're partnered up in a TD swap :) ♥

Hi Rikka!! I am so sorry I forgot to comment on your profile sooner! I know I read it, because we have lots of stuff in common! I am also quite an anxious person. I find that meditation really helps me to deal with it. I love going to museums and galleries. Luckily, my husband lets me drag him along with me :). We share many of our favorite movies and tv. I loved the firefly series. I was so sad that they canceled it. It's so funny that you put time travel on your likes list. I am always so confused by trying to actually wrap my mind around the concept. I'm totally fascinated by it, but it makes my brain hurt!! Thanks again for being patient with me!! I hope you have a fantastic St. Patty's Day!! Happy Swapping ~ Farrah

Thanks for your comments on my profile! I'm not fussy how I get my cards, naked or together in envies to save on postage. If you want to do private swap anytime, I'm definitely interested :D

hi riikka -- i'm jo, one of your partners for the TD let's meet swap. i really like your profile! i gasped when i saw you like Monkey Island! i remember playing The Curse of Monkey Island on my wayy old IBM computer when I was in grade school. my first tattoo was a pirate flag because I'm a Mighty Pirate, just like Guybrush Threepwood. :D

also, i really enjoyed Donnie Darko. what a great film. i enjoyed how everything created a web, and love the ideas Roberta Sparrow raises about time travel. i noticed your music likes and was curious if you've ever listened to MGMT? they're a great feel good band, especially the album Oracular Spectacular. a bit electronic, to boot.

and you gouache?! i love gouache. i got started with it in an art class, and i find it makes for such vibrant colors, especially when i'm painting delicate things, like insects or butterfly wings.

i'm very pleased to meet you, and hope to swap or talk with you soon! :D

cheers, jo

I have Naiv. Super. on cd (read by E. Loe) but have never finished it. I think I might prefer reading it. I'm not good at paying attention to books that come on cds, I'm sort of like: "wow, I got two hands available! I can knit!" And I can't pay attention while knitting :) I have finished listening to Doppler by the same author and I absolutely loved it!

VivaLaDiane on Mar 5, 2011:

Hi lady :) I'm happy to have had you for the Let's Meet swap in Team Darkness. I've studied your profile though as I was your partner for the Dark Collage Swap. I hope you like what I've done for it. I share similar interests. Doc Martins are way rad!! I had a pair once that were leopard print in fabric. At a club though a cigarette ash fell on one of the tips and I could've just smacked someone because Docs are certainly not cheap, you know? Of course I love Finland. I helped my friend with a college writing project on a foreign country and we chose Finland. I hope to one day visit Helsinki because it looks so beautiful.

MUSHROOMS!!!! Ahhhh. I love them majorly too!!! YUMMMMMMMMY! I am/was/will always be obsessed with LOST! Nirvana is awesome! Nine Inch Nails kick ass.

We could be great friends :)
