Description:

Have you heard of steampunk? It's a fairly new genre of fiction, but in recent decades has also become almost a way of life for some people. Part Victorian, part punk, part DIY, the steampunk wave is spreading and growing. Want some more info, maybe a few examples? Visit the following:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk

http://www.brassgoggles.co.uk/brassgoggles/?page_id=18

http://steampunkworkshop.com/

Steampunk is gears, cogs, and skeleton keys. It's bustle skirts and top hats, pinstripes and corsets. It's greasy zepplin mechanics and mad scientists or alchemists. It's clockwork robots, airship pirates, telegrams, spats, suspenders, compasses and, of course, goggles.

Take a look at the websites above and get inspired. You can also image search on Google, or visit etsy.com for more ideas. If you'd like, I can send you a list of what steampunk means to me, along with inspiring movies and books.

SWAP SPECS

-4.5 rating or above - message me if you're below that but can explain (lost package, etc.)

-1 partner

-5 items total

-2 or more handmade (by you or an online/brick-and-mortar seller)

-At least $10 total, whether that includes time and effort for your own handmade, or the cost of others'

-USA-only because of shipping costs; if you'd like to make an international swap, message me and we'll work something out

Recipients: Steampunk is different things to different people, so if you receive something and it doesn't fit your image of what steampunk should be, that's okay! Rate a 5 if you got 5 items on time. Add a heart for an extra-special package or more items.

Senders: Keep the Golden Rule in mind; if you wouldn't like what's going into your package, don't send it. Items should be of good quality, and packaged securely enough to survive a cross-country trip through mail trucks and planes without being damaged. Items don't have to be profile-based, but read your partner's page to get to know them and what they would like.

Questions? Comments? Leave a message below, or send me a note via Swap-Bot. Have fun!

I love it, I've got to get caught up on a couple of other swaps first though. Check out our Steampunk Group!

We havn't done much yet, but we certainly do have potential.

As to the handmade portion, what is the policy on ATCs?

lovelyrita 08/ 6/2008 #

Would love to join- what exactly are we swapping? Just anything related to steampunk? Is there a set value (handmade OR storebought)? -Erica

I would like to ask the same question as lovelyrita! : )

ellie1200 08/ 6/2008 #

The answer's in the description, it's just buried:

"5 items total -2 or more handmade (by you or an online/brick-and-mortar seller) -At least $10 total, whether that includes time and effort for your own handmade, or the cost of others'"

Oops, sorry some things weren't clear! Clarification:

Moominbrooke: Let's say 2 ATCs count as one of the five items So 2 ATCs = 1 item, since they're so small. The same goes for cards or lettersets, smallish paper items. 2 cards or 2 lettersets count as 1 item.

lovelyrita and erdbeersternchen: We are swapping anything related to steampunk! Goggles, brooches, a top hat keychain, stationary adorned with gears, a lace-edged hanky, a parasol.... Use your imagination! Anything that says "steampunk" to you. Feel free to modify storebought items, too; those can count as "handmade."

ellie1200: Sorry, I always forget the formatting's wonky! I'll fix it so it looks like a list.

And yes, minimum of $10 for the whole shebang. If you make some of the items, use your best judgment as to what your time and materials are worth. Again, keep in mind the Golden Rule; make it something you would love to get!

I would like to recommend http://www.instructables.com

(search term Steampunk, of course)

Lots of inspiration and how-to there. Check out the time machine made of cardboard, doodads, glue, leather and paint!

Do a search under images on yahoo for Steam Punk. That should wrap it up for anyone. I even found a pic 2nd page into it for some awesome clockwork cuff links and a clock work broach. If anyone is interested in clock gears galore, let me know. I have a contact who bought out an old watch repair store and has TONS of gears and findings. I could pick you up some to swap for something else. Let me know soon so I can get them to you asap for the swap if you want to use them here.

My friend found this Steampunk quiz for me, it's pretty fun! I am a ragamuffin, according to the test that is. http://www.helloquizzy.com/tests/the-steampunk-style-test Here's the link if you would like to partake.

certifiedscrapaholic 08/21/2008 #

Ok, I did the quiz and here are the results, may help my partner :)

THE EXPLORER You are the Explorer, the embodiment of steampunk’s adventuring spirit. For you, clothing should be rugged and reliable, and just as functional as it is attractive. You probably prefer khaki or leather, and your accessories are as likely to include weapons as technological gizmos. You probably wear boots and gloves, and maybe a pith helmet. Most of what you wear is functional, and if you happen to wear goggles people had better believe that you use them. In addition to Victorian exploration gear, your outfit probably includes little knickknacks from your various travels. Above all, you are a charming blend of rugged Victorian daring and exotic curiosity.

OH YES THIS SO TOTALLY ME!

It's Steampunk Week on threadbangers.com and they will be having costumery info all week. So far there's a goggles video tutorial and over on indymogul.com a cool looking fake binoculars thing with a funny test video of an airship crew.
