Description:

I have been reading "How To Make Books" by Esther Smith and Purgatory Pie Press, and wanted to make the one-page accordion spiral that she featured in it ...

Yep, a different kind of one-page zine!

Blogger Alexandria A lifted the diagram and re-wrote the directions from the book on her blog for others to follow. What she did not include was the advice from Smith's book to weigh down the zine after cutting and folding it -- it needs to be "pressed" into good behavior :) Alexandria A. and Smith recommend using a "bone folder" to make the folds so that they are crisp.

Et voila, a 16 or a 32-page (if both sides are used) minizine -- crazy, huh? That's twice the typical number of pages from the same A4 or 8 1/2 x 11 inch page of typing or printer paper! And ... you can copy them just like the other style of one-page minizine that we are familiar with.

So, let's make spiral accordion zines following the directions above for ... well, let's go crazy and photocopy them and send them to 3 partners. Black and white or color copies, any style or theme. The content is up to the sender, but there is one hard and fast rule for this swap: there must be one French word and one image or mention of an accordion somewhere in the zine. With 16 pages, there should be space.

Open to all ZMACS members in good standing; I will musette all unsent swaps. And, hey, let me know if you are interested in a series from this book! I want to do some bookbinding ...

C'est irresistable!

Mais oui! On peut voyer que les jolies filles aiment bien l'accordeon ... et Weird Al aussi :) And juke boxes, they definitely love the accordion as well.

Santas also love accordions!

Chief Petty Officer Graham Jackson could move people to tears with the accordion ... sorry, that's a serious accordion,

The Agatha Barbara story is so cool. Of course she had a soft side - she played the accordion, didn't she? And if only I had known as a lonely high school student the affinity les jeunes filles have for the accordion. Ah well, c'est la vie.

rngstgstll 02/25/2016 #

Wasn't that cool?! Which reminds me, I owe you an accordion-playing Mastodonna ...

This zine style does flip around and around a bit -- I advise making a small dot in each rectangle for the "front side" before folding. The zine works great as a "read forward/ read backward' sort of document because of the flipping around. As I have been playing with it, I have made a bilingual read forward from each cover/ cross over in the middle zine as well as a poem that reads either way.

Am I doing something wrong? I took a scrap page and folded based on directions above, numbered the pages, then unfolded. The last 4 pages are on the back of the piece of paper. that's gonna make the photocopying step difficult (although I suppose that's an argument for 32 page zine!)

Success! I used Tanya's tips as sent by email, folding the first and final pages before the middle, and that time it worked out properly.

{breathes sigh of relief}

Sent yesterday. Forgot my wallet on Tuesday and had to mail it all on Wednesday

I want to apologise to my partners for sending late. It's been an awful month here.

I have also found the diagram frustrating re the folding. Partly because just when I think I know which are valley folds and which are mountains, I look at the diagram again and they totally flip on me! Without more than one visual point of reference, they do that. (Origami diagrams v cleverly avoid this; also they sometimes point out which are which!)

The other thing I realised was throwing me is Diag 4. What in earth!? Why is it suddenly 5 x 4, then reverting to 4 x 4?

    • 'reverting to'

Halp! Hay-alp! Need EDIT function re comments. ;D

papercaper 05/13/2016 #

See? That should've been ASTERISK MINUS 'reverting to' bc those words were redundant.

Ohhh, OCD-girl gives up. Not without pressing PREVIEW first this time, though. :)
