Description:

Have you ever thrown a message in a bottle into the ocean? Better yet, did you hear back?

For this swap you'll be tossing your bottle into the ocean of mail and letting the postal currents carry it on to your partner. You will send your swap in a water bottle like the ones shown in the picture above. You can buy one just like them at the dollar store. A screw on lid is strongly recommended so it doesn't wiggle off in transit.

You will fill the bottle with goodies such as but not limited to washi tape, stickers, candy, tea, embellishments, pens, ephemera, beads, charms, candles, lotion, make up samples, chap stick, craft supplies, ribbon, lace, die cuts, stamps, magnets etc.

You must include at least 1 item that represents your location

You must include at least 1 profile based item

You will also include a message for your partner answering the following questions

1.Where your message is originating from and something interesting about it.

2.If you were to have thrown this in the ocean/sea what is the name of the one closest to you?

3.Have you ever thrown a message in a bottle into the ocean/sea?

4.Did you hear back?

These will be sent naked like a postcard. The water bottle is your packaging. All the items will go into the water bottle. You will screw the lid on tight, wrap the lid with tape for extra security then, you will address the outside of the water bottle and apply proper postage.

Any food must be in sealed factory wrapping. Please send only items in the condition you would like to receive them in. The bottle must be mostly filled, not just a few items. No unresolved 1s or 3s in the last 6 months.

Please remember to include your swap-bot username and the name of the swap

I've got a concern about sending it naked.Say for instance you put candy in the bottle or you don't.Look like there would be a chance of the bottle being tampered with by sending it naked.I've had things of mine tampered with in the mail before.

Oh, it's been nearly a year since I've mailed a bottle...this is such fun to send/receive! What a great idea to include the questions too ;-)

Love this idea as I have thrown a bottle in the ocean when I lived near the Atlantic in the North. I have the same concerns that craftykat68 has and therefore won't join. My PO is very picky as how I mail my packages.

Wow! I was just thinking about this kind of swap! Watching for now with the intent to join. ;)

For those concerned about mailing the water bottle naked, I have seen this done before. Just to be safe before posting this swap I wanted to confirm this with the post office. So, I went to the post office myself with one of the bottles and asked about it. The post lady didn't even bat an eye, people mail stranger things it seems from talking to her and also reading online about wacky things you can mail. As for tampering with the bottle you will be wrapping the lid in packing tape just like you would when mailing a box of items. That said, if you don't feel comfortable sending a swap like this no worries :) Happy swapping!

just a note i mailed a pinwheel once... yes the thing that blows in the wind. the pinwheel made it to the destination without a scratch

Here's an idea...if you are worried about the contents being seen and taken, what if you put tissue paper in there so all they can see is the paper and not the items? They have fun tissue paper with different patterns so it would still be cool looking.....just a thought.

craftykat68 03/24/2017 #

I think that is a great idea!

Be aware of where you are sending your bottle - some places in the US are already warming up and chocolate, candles, sealed lotion, etc. will not survive the heat. If it's 90 degrees outside, inside a postal truck or metal mailbox will be well over 100 degrees. Thanks - a swapper from Arizona!

I LOVE this idea! I was able to find these same bottles at The Dollar Tree, along with other fun summer things to put inside :D So fun!

A package went into the box today to head out to my partner. Enjoy.

Btw, FYI for all - my outgoing bottle was lined inside with deco paper, and made it fine...except a small glass bottle broke inside...

My partner's wasn't covered (all contents were visible from outside) and it arrived just fine. This was so much fun, trying to cram the WHOLE bottle full with no space to spare. Hope y'all had fun.
