Description:

I love scavenger hunts, and thought it would be fun to try and find books that fit certain criteria—colors, words, symbols, images, etc. I will continue this swap with a different set of scavenger hunt items each month. I've had a lot of fun with these the past seven (!) months, and really appreciate everyone who has participated!!! :)

For this swap, you will send your partner a book, from your own collection or from a used bookstore, thrift shop, etc. that contains all three items from the following list:

  1. The author must be published under a nickname/less formal version of their given name. For example, Nick Hornby would work, but Nicholas Sparks would not. Yes to Sue Monk Kidd, no to Susan Isaacs. A novel by Jennifer O'Connell wouldn't work, but one of her teen novels, which she publishes under the name Jenny O'Connell, would. Capice?

  2. The color YELLOW must appear somewhere on the book’s cover.

  3. In honor of Father’s Day (June 20th), books must contain a description or picture of a father interacting with his child (of any age).

Books can be any type or genre—fiction, biography, self-help, how-to, children’s, little “gifty” books, etc. Sender’s choice, but feel free to check your partner’s profile to get ideas or avoid specific dislikes. Books can and most likely will be used, but must be readable and clean. PLEASE include a note describing where all three items can be found (if it’s not obvious), and anything you’d like to add about the book, your reaction to it (if you've read it), etc.

To recap: you will have ONE partner and send them ONE book, but it needs to have all three scavenger hunt items represented in/on it (nickname, yellow, dad). Feel free to send Media Mail (within the US), particularly if your book is quite heavy, but do not include anything else in the package, other than the note (and maybe a bookmark) tucked inside the book!

Unfortunately, I have to make this one US/Canada/Mexico only… mailing books overseas, especially heavy ones, can be super-expensive. :( But feel free to start an international version if you’d like!

The legal mumbo-jumbo: No recent ones or threes— please take care of your old swaps before signing up for new ones! NEW RULE: Must have at least ten RATED (with fives) snail mail swaps under your belt! Exception: I will "grandfather in" newbies who have participated in my swaps before without any problems. I hate to make this rule, but a few bad experiences have soured me. Lucky for you, I host this swap every month, so once you’ve got ten swaps under your belt, come on back! (And yes, postcard/letter swaps count… this swap isn’t about dollar value, but creativity and commitment to sending.)

At my discretion, I will also ban established swappers if they seem fishy, flaky, or have been known to create ongoing problems in the SHBC swaps or others.

It might be a good idea to have a book in mind before signing up... then, after partners are assigned, you can keep an eye out for something that might be more your partner's taste, if necessary. And if you're going to be late for any reason, PLEASE let both ME and YOUR PARTNER know!!! Failing to do this will potentially ban you from future SHBC swaps.

Having said all that... let's scavenge! :)

I am a little dense and do not understand the name/nickname part...who's ours or the authors? and would we go over their name somehow in the book?

hydro75 05/ 9/2010 #

I meant the author's nickname, if they publish under one... like Bill instead of William, or Cathy as opposed to Catherine. Hope that makes sense! I'm not really sure how else to explain it, but let me know if you need more clarification.

Would putting their intitials as their first name work (H.G. Wells or C.S. Lewis)?

hydro75 05/17/2010 #

Huh... hadn't thought about that... sure! :)

luvscrappin 05/18/2010 #

Great! I think I may have a book.

This sounds like fun. My daughter and I are "into" scavenger hunts at the moment and thought this would be fun and a challenge! I normally don't join swaps unless they are USA only, but making and exception this time!

hydro75 05/27/2010 #

@Darleneh710 - Great to have you (and your daughter) on board! And so far, all of us in this swap are in the US. (And it's been my experience that mailing to Canada isn't all that expensive... it just takes so dreadfully looooong to get there!) :P

@hydro75 Thank you! Also, wondering the description or picture of dad interacting with child..that can be in the book as well as on the cover right?

hydro75 05/29/2010 #

The way I worded it (I think) was that the dad-child interaction would be a description or picture within the book, but if there's an image of dad and kid on cover, that would work as well. Hope that answers your question... I haven't had any coffee yet, and everything's a little fuzzy... :)

Thanks!
