This is the 6th installment to the Guardians of Ga'Hoole illustrated series, if you are not familiar w/this series, this series is all about noble owls depicted like knights of Camelot, it's written by Kathryn Lasky, & the series is called Guardians of Ga'Hoole. Expect to see all of your favorite characters from the amazing young adult fantasy novel series following this swap. Please Note: it is not a requirement to know or read this series or stories, this swap is inspired by the series & a fun way to introduce illustrating different species of owls.

For this swap you are to create & design your own depiction of Boron and/or Barron (Species: Bubo scandiacus, Snowy Owl), other owls may be on your card but, either Boron or Barron or both must be the main character(s). The style you choose to depict of owl & the decision as to owl's appearance is up to the artist (sender). Make something you would be proud to trade or matte & frame for your own wall, this is for 1 quality illustrated ATC, for 1 partner.

Newbies with well filled out profiles are welcome. Providing links to your work is encouraged for newbies & seasoned swappers. 4.9 or higher are welcome, no unexplained 3s or 1s, I will be checking profiles before the swap begins. I will angel if the need arises. I shall also be providing links to future Ga'hoole swaps under the description section of each Ga'hoole owl swap.

Thank you for your participation & I would be happy to answer any questions that you may have about this swap or this series.

Cat I haven't read the books yet but I remember you telling me the King and Queen were snowy owls. Should we illustrate both? I assume Boron is the male and Barron is the female?

izohgore 10/19/2010 #

Yes, you are correct, they are the King (Boron) & Queen (Barron) that Soren & the rest of the band met on his journey to the Great Ga'Hoole Tree, they are the King & Queen of Ga'Hoole. You may choose to do either one or the other, or you may like to illustrate both on one card. I know you know this about owls but, this may help others, both males & females look the same w/this species, the females are sometimes larger than the males in this species. They are also in the film but, in the film the male is depicted larger than his mate.

Oops, I stand corrected, the female apparently has more spots & is a little different. I may have been confusing this species w/the previous entry, the Spotted Owl. ;) Thanks @dobie256 for the kind email. :)

She informed me that there "IS sexual dimorphism. The female usually has black spotting on the plumage while the male is all white."

Apologies for any confusing I may have caused. lol I probably would have discovered this a little late while doing research to illustrate these owls. Just like all of you, I am new to making different species of owls, most of these I have never tried prior to this series. I love challenging myself. The Tyto albas are an exception to illustrating their species prior to this Swap-bot series. ;)

In the film they were both depicted all white, the female was considerable smaller in the film & they both looked nearly identical. Their characters do not proceed through the entire series, so I may have been confused but, I think I recall Soren's first glimpse of them in a blistering storm both dressed in full white to match the white-out. Oftentimes the author refers to the owls as a species rather than a full description.

Hey Cat - it's all good! I was just commenting as a biologist who has lots of experience with raptors. I'm sure artistic license, both in the books and the ATCs, is not only allowed, but welcomed! I can hardly wait to see how the artists in this awesome group portray these gorgeous owls!

I prefer to know how these birds truly are & thank you for pointing this out @dobie256 , so happy to have someone w/a little experience w/raptors around here! :)

Btw, I just realized that I had the due date wrong, it's been changed for Dec. Everyone will have a month from sign-up to make their card because of the busy season. :)
