Description:

This is another great idea proposed by @snailgirl - thx dear! (";)

There are so many great Christmas fabrics out there, so let's do some shopping and cutting and share it with each other!

When this swap is finished, we will each have enough Christmas fabric strips to make a fun holiday lap quilt USING THIS VIDEO TUTORIAL. Or, you can use THIS PDF TUTORIAL.

We will have 4 partners so we will need a minimum of 5 people to join to make this work.

Each participant purchases a half yard (18" or 45 cm) of four different quilt quality cotton holiday fabrics. (Or if you already have a huge stash of quilting quality holiday cotton, you may choose from that instead, as long as you have at least half a yard of each!)

Do this with each of the 4 pieces: Cut in half so you end up with 2 pieces, each 9" (22.5 cm) x the width. You will now have 8 pieces of assorted fabric.

Do this with each of the 8 pieces: Cut into two uneven strips (widths totalling 9" or 22.5 cm). Keep the 2 pieces of the same fabric together - this will be a "set".

Keep one set (totaling 9") of each fabric for yourself and send the remaining 4 sets to your partners. Each of your partners will receive a different set of fabric.

Each of us will end up with 16 strips (8 of our own, and 8 from our partners) to sew into a nice little quilt approximately 42"x 64".

Given the nature of this swap, it is sender's choice so you can go ahead and start shopping or searching now! (";)

Open to all NFS members in good standing who also meet the swapping criteria stated in my profile.

Have fun!

Love it! I'm in!!!

Hey this is a great idea for a swap....too bad I stay away from holiday projects or I'd join!

snailgirl 10/26/2010 #

Thanks for hosting @TerryF I think it will be lots of fun!!

Leeame 10/28/2010 #

I don't mean to be dense, but which tutorial explains the project? Lisa

TerryF 10/28/2010 #

Go up to the swap description and click on the blue capital letters: USING THIS TUTORIAL. This is a link and will take you to the tutorial. (";)

Leeame 10/29/2010 #

I am sorry, I did that & it sent me to the "subscribe to" area not a direct link to any one tutorial. It maybe my computer. Thank you anyway. Lisa

luv2craft 10/30/2010 #

So that I am clear, the fabric that you send is that a set of the same fabric or two different totalling 9" for each partner?

TerryF 10/30/2010 #

Leeame, the link works fine for me. It is probably your computer. It is a YouTube video, if that helps.

luv2craft, I have edited the instructions to specify that a "set" consists of 2 pieces of the same fabric. So each partner will receive a different set. This will give our quilts more cohesion.

Leeame 10/30/2010 #

Thank you very much, for some reason my itouch didn't care for the link. The PC loved it and the tutorial is perfect. Count me in.

Sorry I am Dutch and do not understand this sentence: Do this with each of the 8 pieces: Cut into two uneven strips (widths totalling 9" or 22.5 cm). Keep the 2 pieces of the same fabric together - this will be a "set". Can you explan this for me?

Thanks Yvonne

beckysews 11/ 4/2010 #

YvonneCrea, I am American and really don't understand it either. :)

TerryF 11/ 5/2010 #

Take one of your eight pieces and cut it in 2 pieces along the longest side. But do not cut it exactly in half (if you do, you will end up with 2 pieces that are both 4.5" or 11.25 cm wide, and we do not want them exactly the same width).

Instead, cut it into 2 pieces unequal in width, such as 5" and 4" (12.5 cm and 10 cm), or 3" and 6" (7.5 cm and 15 cm) , or any other combination that adds up to 9" (22.5 cm). Any width EXCEPT 4.5" (11.25 cm) is fine. These 2 pieces of the same fabric are now a "set".

Do the same with all 8 pieces of fabric. You will end up with 16 "sets". Keep one of each set for yourself and send the other 4 sets to your 4 partners.

Hope this helps. I found it easier to understand when I actually drew it all out.

YvonneCrea 11/ 5/2010 #

So if I understand it. I will have 8 different pieces at home and sent two pieces (from different fabric) to each of my partners. Is this correct?

Many thanks. Yvonne

YvonneCrea 11/ 5/2010 #

I also see that everyone is from USA. Is it a problem for you that I am from The Netherlands?

Yvonne

beckysews 11/ 5/2010 #

I think I understand now.

YvonneCrea, I don't mind that you are in The Netherlands! Are you a native? How's the weather?

YvonneCrea 11/ 6/2010 #

Yes and the weather is here clouded but dry and I think about 17* outside.

snailgirl 11/ 6/2010 #

you send your partner two strips from the same fabric totaling 9" in width...

TerryF 11/ 6/2010 #

Yep! (";)

Make sure that you send each partner a "set" (not 2 different kinds of fabric). Having at least 2 pieces that match from each partner will give your mini quilt some cohesion.

YvonneCrea, this swap is "international", as are all of my swaps. I don't like to restrict my swaps unless they are very expensive to mail.

If anyone needs anymore help with this, please pm me. Thx and have fun!

TerryF 11/13/2010 #

I have emailed beancounter17 re the status of this swap as she has not marked it as sent yet.

TerryF 11/15/2010 #

beancounter17 was unavoidably delayed in sending - she says she will contact all of her partners.

beancounter17 11/16/2010 #

@terryf - thanks for posting the note about my status. I am packing up things today. However, I am still confused...I am assuming that I will be sending one fabric to each of my partners, correct? So, the extra piece in your package is just an extra (which I LOVE, by the way!)??

YvonneCrea 11/16/2010 #

I want to tell everyone that the postmen are on strike in the Netherlands. So it may be that the packet arrives too late by you or the packages arrives too late by me. Greetings Yvonne

TerryF 11/25/2010 #

beancounter17: Yes, dear, one fabric in 2 strips to each partner. (I sent an extra piece of coordinating fabric to my partners, but that was not a requirement of the swap.)

TerryF 11/26/2010 #

I will be mailing swaps tomorrow to all of YvonneCrea's partners. Hopefully her swaps (delayed by a postal strike in her country) will arrive in the not too distant future. (";)

TerryF 11/27/2010 #

Mailed the 3 angeled swaps today.

TerryF 12/ 7/2010 #
