Black tea makes an excellent vintage dye. Take the first cup and pour it into an empty gallon jug with a lid. After you have about half a gallon, heat it up and add a cup of vinegar. Put your white or muslin fabric into it. The tea stains the fabric a light shade of brown.
Jo used this method in Little Women, when she borrowed her sister's dress without asking, then it got ruined at a party.
