No maximum thickness requirement, although... the squares should be sturdy, so a cardstock backing at least.
Also, no restrictions on materials... clay, paper, glass, fabric, anything at all. EXCEPT, please keep in mind that some countries have very strict customs regulations so do not use any plant or other organic materials in your art.
