Description:

This swap was inspired by some lyrics from the musical, Pippin: "I've got to be where my spirit can run free / Got to find my corner of the sky." This swap is a chance for you to show other swappers a "corner of the sky"--literally!

For this swap you will have 3 partners. To each partner you will send 2 photo ATCs which focus on the sky where you live or someplace you've visited: clouds, sunrises, moonrises--whatever you'd like as long as it's the sky above you. So aim your camera upward, resize or crop your photos to standard ATC dimensions (2.5 x 3.5 inches), back them with cardstock, and send them off to your partners--that's it!

Other artistic choices--altering/manipulating photos, adding embellishments, using the cardstock to create a border, etc.--are up to the discretion of each swapper; they are not requirements for the swap.

It's okay if your photos include a little bit of non-sky (e.g., the tops of trees, part of a building, the horizon, some telephone wires)--but try to keep the focus of each photograph on the sky itself. It's a chance for the sky to be the "main event" rather than the background.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I hope you'll enjoy photographing and sharing your "corner of the sky...."

Can a 'corner of the sky' photo include some other non-sky bits, e.g. a sunset over a rooftop, or through the branches of a tree?

beckra 09/26/2007 #

Thanks for asking, Kessie! I think it's fine if the photo includes a little bit of non-sky, as you say, as long as the focus is on the sky itself. Does that make sense? I'll alter the description above to say that.

Starwatcher 09/26/2007 #

What a great swap idea! I'm in! I'm always looking for a way to share my 'sky' photos that I've taken through my telescope, as well as pictures of the beautiful cloudscapes over the Oregon coast. Thanks so much for hosting, Beckra!

Melusine 09/26/2007 #

Please can I join? My ATCs would not be of the sky above me now but of where I was in July - I would love to share the cloud pictures I took then with others. Honest ... I took these pictures because of the clouds themselve and no other reason.

beckra 09/26/2007 #

Wow, Starwatcher! You have photos taken through a telescope? That's great! I'm glad you're in....

beckra 09/26/2007 #

And, sure, Melusine--If your photos are of the sky in a different place, that's fine, too--just include a note explaining where they're from when you send them to your partners, so they know what particular "corner of sky" you were photographing.

I also have "sky/cloud" pictures I took in Canada, Montana and here, in Alabama. Glad I can use them.

Melusine 09/30/2007 #

Question - do the photos have to be on photo paper? Can they be printed on ordinary paper - which is all I have access to?

beckra 09/30/2007 #

Hello, Melusine--I'd like to leave the paper used up to each person's discretion. One of my favorite ATCs that I've received is a photo printed on non-photo paper....

Melusine 10/ 1/2007 #

Brilliant - thank you. Some of my negatives are hard to reprint - the film has never been cut because the objects photographed could be destroyed in the cutting process - but I can scan and print off the orginals.

beckra 10/ 2/2007 #

Melusine--Someone in another swap I'm in suggested that Photobox (www.photobox.co.uk) is a good venue for having prints made in the UK. If you can scan in the negatives, you can use the online ordering site to have prints made from your digital images and then mailed to you. Just wanted to let you know that it's out there as an option....

iheartswap 10/16/2007 #

i love this idea, because i love the sky! i am constantly taking pictures of clouds, sunsets, etc. thanks for the swap!

beckra 10/16/2007 #

Welcome, iheartswap! This swap has really made me pay attention to the sky, and now I am taking pictures of it all the time myself!

pahasiga 10/16/2007 #

Same here - now I'm looking much more up to the sky. Only it is usually just grey nowadays.

pahasiga 10/23/2007 #

I wonder would in such a swap suit a photo of sky reflection in water?

Melusine 10/23/2007 #

Just thought I would let people know that I posted my ATCs off this evening. Keep your fingers crossed that they have a speedy trip across the pond.

beckra 10/24/2007 #

pahasiga--I think it would be fine to use a reflection as long as the sky is reflected clearly enough that it's the focus (the "main event" so to speak), rather than the water....

pahasiga 11/ 4/2007 #

The result of this swap is here... my 5-year-old looked out of window and demanded I take a photo of sky "because it looks so nice, like printed".

cards heading out to wishcake, art2wist and TheFrOgQueEn... will be in the mail tuesday (monday holiday here)

beckra 11/13/2007 #

When I made the deadline for sending, I forgot about the Veterans Day Holiday in the US (no mail). So I hope everyone will cut each other slack if things are postmarked 11/13 instead of 11/12....

twobluecrows 11/13/2007 #

Hi to my partners--yesterday, the 12th was Veterans' Day and the post office was closed--and I forgot my envelopes at work when the mail didn't go out, so I'll have to mail them tomorrow! Sorry! Cyn

Wrenja 11/18/2007 #

I in my infinite wisdom forgot to put postage on my letters when I sent them out, and it took until yesterday(saturday) for them to be returned to me. So I'll be re-sending them out tomorrow...

with postage.

I promise.

No really.

sigh

twobluecrows 11/21/2007 #

Wrenja, don't feel bad, You are certainly not alone in having done that! LOL

Cyn

Melusine 11/26/2007 #

My thanks to Starwatched and twobluecrows for their ATCs. iheartswap - yours still hasn't arrived

Melusine 11/26/2007 #

Opps - that should have been Starwatcher. Sorry about the "d"
