About Me

In a "nut"shell, I am a mighty oak— a little "nut" that stood it's ground! Okay, so I am a little nutty...I love nature, I love outdoors. I love bad puns. So the mighty oak quote epitomizes me on so many levels. Quirky, fun, whimsical, outdoorsy.

Since I've discovered Swap-Bot, I've been inspired and enlightened to all kinds of new creative mediums I can't wait to explore. I've discovered ATC's as a form that gives me the opportunity to try out and experiment with different art-forms in miniature. I started out designing ATCs on my computer, and all of a sudden, I've discovered that I can doodle a bit if I put my mind to it. I am working on hand-drawing/painting/lettering more art, and am officially addicted to zentangling and mandalas too. (But please be patient with my efforts to hand-draw! :) My mind sees things that my hands can't seem to deliver.

My current obsession is "artist journey" things and challenges that make me look at the world as art, or things that can inspire art.

• Owls

• Cephalopods (octopus, squid, cuttlefish)

• Bats

• Rays

• Llamas and goats (wish I could have some!)

• Foxes

• Freshwater fish (trout, sunfish, bass, crappie, northern, walleye, so cute don't ya know?!")

• Koi

• Moose

• Reindeer (I'm part Finnish) and I love Caribou coffee.

  • Hmmmmm...noticing a nocturnal theme here...

Favorite Movies

Favorite Crafts

Writing poetry, writing children's nonsense, essays and non-fiction.....Zentangles, zentangles, zentangles! Mandalas galore,....Just made my first zines and LOVE it! And started hand-carving stamps. LOVE it too! Have no clue how to crochet but really want to learn to make amigurumi, and also cute felt art. (Need more time and training!). I wish sewing machines wouldn't get tangled all the time or I would love sewing too. (I had no patience and gave away my machine :( I might have to find a good one down the road. ) Making little critters is certainly my next challenge along with writing, and finishing a kids book I've been working on.

Odds and Ends

I love being introduced to new things, new kinds of art, new techniques, new artists. I love to learn.

Art that is currently inspiring me: • Marimekko • Susie Ghahremani ( www.boygirlparty.com ) • Helen Dardik ( www.oneluckyhelen.com) • Alberto Cerretino • Catalina Estrada • Ann Taintor • Glen Baxter • Meomi (Octonauts books) and Tokidoki • Cute packaging of BlueQ stuff

Favorite Music

ECCLECTIC! Folk, celtic, alternative, electronic, zydeco, cajun, punk 80's, Blues, Kids...you name it! Favorite Colors

Earth tones and natural fibers, sepia tones, greens especially sage, jewel tones like Peridot, Amethyst (all purples, teal, and other tertiary colors like citrine. For some reason I I don't like navy blue or most blues....I don't know why that is. And I don't know why I am even putting this on here, as all colors have a place in the appropriate art.

Update

I took a break from Swap-Bot for a few years. Partly because I got burned out trying to balance art and family. I was recently working on decluttering when I stumbled on some old swaps, and realized how much I missed creative outlet. (I don't seem to create art without having a formal outlet for motivation.) I am interested in easing back in to the swap-bot community again in hopes of unplugging my creative juices and start them flowing again.

Comment: Wow, wow, wow. Thanks for the cds! LOVE. Seriously? Dar Williams? Kate Rusby? Catie Curtis? Kathleen Edwards? Pattty Griffin? Ryan Adams? Iron and Wine? Come on! Wicked. I'll be listening to them on the way to work tomorrow and I'll let you know some of the highlights once I have. The recipe sounds fantastic too. Thanks again for doing this with me.

I liked them all, but think the frog is my fave. And I love the doodle note pad---one can never have too many of those. I also liked all the cool stamps on the envie, too. I wish I could give you more hearts. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

Comment: Kari, if I could give you a 10+ rating, I would have done it. Thank you so much for your letter and for the things you included. To say you made my entire day is an understatement, I was so touched that I was in tears and that my friend, is not an easy thing to do with me. (Hugs)
Response: Ahh, shucks! I am so glad you liked everything. Happy writing! Hope to see you in Nanoland sometime.

Comment: Oooooooo Kari, I wish I could give you more hearts for the wonderful package you sent! It blew me away. Your "ad to art" pieces are great. I love them all, but think the angel is my favorite. I never thought of using printed patterns from ads in a zentangle (I will have to try that.) I like the inner envie with my name zentangled on it---I will use it to store something special. And I ADORE the sheets of citrasolved NatGeo you included. They are gorgeous and I can't wait to use them in a project. (Now I am hoping the envie I am sending you is not skimpy in comparison.) Thanks so much!

Comment: You deserve double the rating for sending twice. I can't find the first one. I had it set out to read and it is gone. I suspect my son or husband hid it. The second came in recently. I'll update this with specifics when I can.

Comment: Thank you so much for the great swap Kari! All your drawings (from the owl on the envie, to the moose and babuska doll swap 4x4s, to the numerous lovely drawings in your zine) make me smile. :-) I'm glad we're doing a continuing art exchange---can't wait to see what you send next.

Comment: What can I say but amazing!! I love these cards so much and the postcard! I have a few more things to finish up before I get yours out. Thank you so much for swapping for me and the cute cards and extras!

Comment: I understand this is part one but I'll rate now because I like your letter and your zine. [I'm going to have to learn how to make them] I am pretty much where you are, rereading and editing the NANO novel - trying to be ready to send it to a competition with a May 1 deadline.. .just gotta send it someplace and start collecting the rejects. Thanks for the final info roundup -- will write a PM as this is getting long.
Response: Think positive! You will not be rejected! Don't look at a lack of acceptance as rejection. Look at it as a "redirection." Keep plugging. I am right there with you. I'll send you the rest of my update in a few weeks. :)

Comment: OMG Kari----you will not be allowed to use the words "meager" and "repulse" when talking about your artwork EVER again!!! Your work is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! I like all 3 pieces, but especially love the hedgie (we used to have 3--one at a time---for pets.) And thanks for the cute extas (I can't wait to use the bunny stickers.) I am ready for our next "assignment" and can't wait to see what you have in store for us. Thank you so much.
