Description:

We just finished up our first Journal Swap With a Twist and it was so much fun, I thought I'd host another. This is the US Only Version. To join the International Version go here: http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/11435

For this swap you will have one partner and keep a journal for one month. During this time you will write at least twenty entries (but feel free to write more). Each entry should contain at least one page of text. Text could be a story, a poem, a couple paragraphs about your day - whatever you feel like writing.

Here's the twist: each entry should also contain an "extra." Extras could include an illustration, a recipe, a collage, a photograph, a song (you could make a complimentary mix cd), a little something that you picked up that day (brochure, piece of candy, etc), or whatever else you can come up with. The extras can vary by day, so you could have a song for the first day, a recipe for the second day, and a photograph for the third, etc.

Extras can either be glued into the journal (think recipes, photographs, etc) or packed in the box with the journal (think mixed cd, sweets, etc). However, for things that are packed in the box, please note which entry they are for.

*I've received several questions on the monetary value of extras. It's impossible to say what each extra should be worth, but I do think it's necessary for there to be an assortment. There should be at least a few that are higher value (either money-wise, think $3-5 USD or effort-wise, think a handmade object, etc). I hope this clarifies it a bit, but if you have any further questions, please message me.

Basically the intent of this swap is to create a journal stuffed full of interesting text and goodies. You will send the journal to your partner after one month and they will keep it.

The journal itself can be any size. It can be store bought or handmade. Keep in mind that it might be shipped internationally, so weight and durability should come into play.

Please remember to give out hearts for extra "extras" and anything really that goes above and beyond.

This swap will require a commitment so the restrictions are as follows: You must have a rating of at least 4.8. You may not have any "no sends" for the past two months. I don't like banning people, but I want to ensure that everyone who puts forth the effort for this swap receives a quality journal in return.

Due to problems in other journal swaps I've hosted, I reserve the right to skip any person before the send by date. This means, I reserve the right to contact the person who sends to that swapper and have them instead send to the swapper's partner, thereby skipping them. I would not do this lightly, but I will not hesitate to do it if the person's ratings fall significantly, they fail to send out multiple swaps, or they do not sign into swap-bot for 2+ weeks. I would hate to do this, but if it becomes necessary I will. This is a big swap and I don't want people disappointed because they worked really hard on their journal and received nothing in return.

I think that covers everything. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

So, no newbies on this swap then?

julief 02/ 1/2008 #

Nope sorry! Because it's such a big swap in terms of commitment/money/etc you must have a rating of 4.8 or above.. which also means no newbies.

The close by date is pretty far in the future, so it's very possible to join a fast swap and receive a rating before it closes.

hippofairy 02/ 2/2008 #

can we start our journal now? or do we have to wait until we're assigned partners?

julief 02/ 3/2008 #

You can definitely start it now. Although some people like to at least have a few entries personalized at the end for their partner.

I just signed up. I did "Journal With A Twist" (the original) and really enjoyed it.

ChicCityGal 02/13/2008 #

Ok I just don't see why people don't let new swappers participate and what constitutes a new swapper. I have participated in 3 swaps already and have 3 more pending there are many swaps I would love to participate int but just can't and the newbie ones don't really interest me. I mean really what can you do great with a cheap swap. Anywhoo... I guess I just needed to get that off my chest. HAVE FUN with this swap I wish I could have participated :( Maybe in the future when I am a "Seasoned" swapper.

julief 02/13/2008 #

Essentially a New swapper is a swapper without a rating. If you have a rating and it is 4.8 or above, you're more than welcome to join.

I just feel that I can't open this swap up to swappers without a rating because my first commitment is to the swappers who meet the rating requirements and are going to put forth a lot of time, money, effort, etc to make this swap really special for their partner.

That being said, the join by date is still over a month in the future. That would give someone plenty of time to join a quick newbie swap and receive a rating.

I'm sorry if some swappers feel this is unfair, but I'm not sure how else to regulate this swap.

Suggestions?

julief 02/13/2008 #

ChicCityGal - I'm so glad you decided to join.

We have such an awesome group of swappers already; I'm really excited about this round.

ChicCityGal 02/15/2008 #

Yay!!!!!

I bought my journal yesterday now I can get these thoughts down on paper.

katybean27 02/15/2008 #

I'm so excited about this. I have only recently gotten into journaling. I'm currently trying to fill my second one. I also have about 13 empty journals, simply because I can't stop buying them. So, this should be fun. I'm really looking forward to seeing what I get as well.

Weeeeeee!!

kgeslab 02/19/2008 #

What an interesting idea! I can't wait to make little pockets and stuff it full! I love journaling and this will make me do it!

Grinch 02/23/2008 #

I was in the Journal with a twist international one that ended Jan 12 and have not been rated or received anything yet,so I thought I would try the U.S. only instead and see if I have better luck. I really had fun putting together my last journal.

ChicCityGal 02/23/2008 #

If anyone doesn't mind me asking, did anyone who participated in this type of swap before just barely touch upon their lives or really got emotion and wrote how they felt day to day or just a light recalling of the events that happened in their lives. I want to do it right but I don't really know what is the appropriate or "norm" when journaling and sharing with others? I don't mean I would tell of anything unappropriate I guess I am just asking what's the protocol when it comes to journaling.

julief 02/25/2008 #

Hey CityChicgirl,

It's been my experience that a lot of people find a mix for their journal. Some of their entries will be filled with emotion and things from their personal life, while other entries will be lighter.

That being said, don't worry about what's 'the norm' for journaling swaps. I think the important thing is that you do the journal however you're comfortable with.

So much of this swap isn't the end product that your partner receives in the mail, but the experience you have while working on your journal.

Hope that helps!

julief 02/27/2008 #

It's the longest swap description ever, I know - sorry.

I've received some questions about the "Value" of extras though, so I've edited the above description in hopes of clarifying it.

Please refer back to the description and message me if you have any further questions.

PiercedNinjette 02/28/2008 #

YAY! I'm not a "newbie" anymore!

Aerochik 03/ 5/2008 #

I look forward to trying it again, I never received mine the first time. So maybe it will work out this time. Thanks for making a second one.

lannoe 03/ 7/2008 #

I have a question? You said the amount spent on each extra should run $3-$5? If we write the recipe, etc ... that won't cost a thing. So maybe am confused. Can you clarify?

lannoe

julief 03/ 8/2008 #

$3-5 on a few "higher value" extras. You'll need 20 extras in all, but don't have to spend that much on each one. I was thinking just a few higher value ones that could be tailored to your partner's tastes after partners have been assigned.

Hope that clarifies.

julief 03/17/2008 #

Partners have been assigned, so be sure to check out you drew!
